Distance: 9 miles round trip
Level: 8/10 Moderate to strenuous, not for beginners
Elevation gain: 3000 ft.
The Hike:
Hike up the Sam Merrill Trail at the north end of Lake Street which ends at Loma Alta in Pasadena first to Echo Mountain, and then up to Inspiration Point via the Castle Canyon Trail and return. Bring snacks for the trail and lunch for Inspiration Point.
Parking is on the street and depending on availability could require some extra walking. Exit the 210 Fwy at Lake St in Pasadena and head North. The trail has many switchbacks, but is a constant uphill and easy to follow. It usually takes less than 1.5 hours to reach the top. Even more info on this hike. For Safety
Carry plenty of water and drink it. Wear proper footwear, bring snacks, sunscreen, hat and be aware of weather conditions. Walking sticks would be useful on portions of this one. Dogs, leashed and friendly, are fine here. Know your limits and if you’re having problems or decide not to finish a hike please let someone know. Be alert for ticks and rattlesnakes. I do have a first aid kit with me.
