Buck Moon Hike on Mt. Basura – Las Virgenes Highlands

Tired of the same old full moon hike? Then this one is for you. It will be the first time we have gone to Mt Basura in the evening. Between Upper Las Virgenes and Cheseboro Canyons is the site of “Mt Basura” —  my name for the Calabasas Landfill. Our destination is a small peak overlooking the landfill with views of Calabasas and Agoura beyond.

Bring drink and light snacks to share. I’ll bring some cold white wine.

Our usual hikes to Mt Basura are about 8-9 miles. I have created a shorter option of about 5.5 miles with about 600′ net elevation gain. The trails are clear and wide — perfect for a moonlit hike.

No white lights allowed on hike. Green and/or red lights are ok. If you don’t have one, that’s ok too — the full moon will provide enough light.  Get one of these and stuff it into your backpack for future night hikes.

The Full Moon in July is the Buck Moon, named after the new antlers that emerge from a buck’s forehead around this time of the year. It is also called Thunder Moon, Hay Moon, and Wort Moon.

Trail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need.

Trail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly.
