WESTLAKE VISTA PEAK + optional lunch at The Stonehaus

BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.

WESTLAKE VISTA PEAK (2445′) – One of the loneliest peaks in The Santa Monica Mountains

Tired of mundane hikes, then join me on one of my favorite local treks as we make our way up to one of the loneliest peaks in the Santa Monica Mountains. You’ll see why it’s seldom bagged when you take on this little beast. We’ll follow a “use trail” from Hwy. 23 which is extremely steep and requires a bit of class 3 rock scrambling as well.

This little monster is for those who don’t scare easily to the challenges it offers. The pay off will be at the top of Westlake Vista Peak where you’ll have a unique view of three lakes (Sherwood, Westlake and Las Virgenes reservoirs) and the Pacific Ocean. This 3+ mile 900’ gain is nothing to scoff at. So, if you feel that you have what it takes and have hiked on tough little hikes before, sign up for this local monster if the site of blood doesn’t bother you, because there may be some.

MEET UP LOCATION: Exit the 101 FWY at Westlake Blvd in Thousand Oaks. Head south on Westlake Blvd. to Potrero Rd. Turn right and go about 400 yards to Camberwell Pl. Immediately turn right on Margate Pl. where we’ll all meet before car shuttling to the trailhead.

TIME: No later than 9:00 a.m.

DURATION AND OBJECTIVE: What ever it takes to accomplish THE TASK (Time, Energy, Fear, Pain, Blood, sweat, tears, etc.).

THE PEAK: Standing guard over Westlake Village at 2445′, this unnamed peak which I’ll dub as “Westlake Vista Peak, beckons to be conquered again.

DISTANCE COVERED: One of the toughest 3+ mile treks around The Westlake Village area. Guaranteed to feel like you’ve done well over 7 miles when you’re done.

PACE: We’ll travel as fast as the slowest trekker. But, we do have to stay together, since it’s very easy to loose the group and the “use” trails.

ELEVATION GAIN: 900′ +

EXPERIENCE LEVEL: Strong Intermediate hiker with class 3 steep scrambling skills and bushwhacking experience that has hiked on tough hikes before.

Trail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need.

Trail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly.
