THE LAS VIRGENES RESERVOIR

WESTLAKE VISTA PEAK (2445′) – One of the loneliest peaks in The Santa Monica Mountains

Tired of mundane hikes, then join me on one of my favorite local transcendent treks (Forth time posted on our CDH site).

This is a Frankenstein type trail that was put together by stitching up some local “use” trails overlooking the Westlake Village area. This monster is for those who don’t scare easily to the challenges it offers. There are two peaks along the way that will require some class 3 rock scrambling over very steep terrain. The pay off will be near the end of this trek when you’ll have a unique view of three lakes (Sherwood, Westlake and Las Virgenes reservoirs) and the Pacific Ocean. This is similar to the Transcendent Taylor Trek seen in Jotce’s video, but instead of an in and out trek, I have added “use” trails at the beginning and end so that we can accomplish this via a car shuttle, thus avoiding the monotony of back tracking. The 7+ miles 2000’ gain is one of the toughest around this area. So, if you feel that you have what it takes and the site of blood doesn’t bother you, sign up for this local monster.

TIME: No later than 7:30 a.m.

DURATION AND OBJECTIVE: What ever it takes to accomplish THE TASK (Time, Energy, Fear, Pain, Blood, sweat, tears, etc.).

THE TASK: To be the fourth group of CDH trekkers to ever reach THE PEAK from Triunfo Creek Park via the extra ridge line “use” trail.

THE PEAK: Standing guard over Westlake Village at 2445′, this unnamed peak which I’ll dub as “Westlake Vista Peak, beckons to be conquered again.

DISTANCE COVERED: One of the toughest 7+ miles around. Guaranteed to feel like you’ve done well over 12 miles when you’re done.

PACE: We’ll travel as fast as the slowest trekker. But, we do have to stay together, since it’s very easy to loose the group and the “use” trails.

ELEVATION GAIN: 2000′ +

EXPERIENCE LEVEL: Strong Intermediate hiker with class 3 steep scrambling skills and bushwhacking experience.

Trail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need.

Trail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly.
