The Original E.T. Hike – Saddle Ridge Fire Assessment – 🐶s OK
Join our Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/hikingwithdean/
We’ve been following the footsteps of ET since 2008! Since then we have improved upon the hike eliminating all but a few yards of sidewalk walking. Dogs are ok on this one.
The open spaces and trails lacing Porter Ranch provides us the opportunity to wander the remaining vestiges of two riparian canyons and a cliff-rimmed hillside blanketed with aromatic sage.
So let us set out for the suburban stronghold of Porter Ranch for a variegated loop through the hidden wilds and wild suburbia of the north valley including Aliso Canyon and Limekiln Canyon. Two oak- and sycamore-shaded canyons–Aliso and Limekiln–and some eroded sedimentary outcroppings known as “The Palisades” are some of the highlights
We’ll be hiking on a section of the The Palisades featured in the movie and take our snack break at “E.T. Park” (Aliso Canyon Park) where they filmed some scenes from ET. Get the movie here
The video below shows the location of our hike. The maker did an excellent job in juxtaposing scenes from ET with present day shots. Pay particularly close attention to the opening shots, the dirt path a bicycle is riding on, and the van drivng into a park. We will be hiking over and through these locations.
Hike is about 8 miles with about 1,000 feet total ascent.

Post Hike Lunch
🍺Post hike lunch is at Islands down the street at Porter Ranch Dr
Head for the North Valley YMCA on Corbin Ave. The trail head is on the right (if you are traveling north) just before the YMCA sign. Park on street. Here is a current pic of our trail head. The trail itself is in good shape here.
Trail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need.
Trail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly.
