On Saturday, September 26, Malibu Creek State Park (MCSP) will be holding its 50th anniversary celebration. We will get a jump start on the celebration by doing a grand tour of the central/western part of the park. Our hike starts from MCSP’s Lower/Main Trailhead parking lot. You will be entering the state park through the staffed kiosk off of Las Virgenes so have your state park pass or entrance fee ($3/hour, $11/day) handy.
Our MCSP adventure begins with a riparian detour through the Ann Skager trail via the campground amphitheater. After the Ann Skager loop we will pick up the High Road that runs along Malibu Creek and connects with Crags Road. Crags Road climbs up to Century Lake. We will stop to enjoy Century Dam’s man-made waterfall (overflow) and then continue our climb using the Lookout Trail which affords panoramic views of the western end of the park. From there we will proceed to the MASH site which will be our turnaround point. We will return the way we came (sans Lookout trail), adding on a loop up and over the Grassland Trail with views of the eastern end of the park (and the main parking lot from whence we started).
This out-and-back hike, plus those side trips, clocks in at around 7 miles, with an elevation gain/loss of about 650‘.
Directions: From the 101 Freeway take Las Virgenes Rd., south for about 3.5 miles to the MCSP entrance (first right after crossing Mulholland).
