LOCAL NEWHALL HIKE: Gates Trail, Pine Street, Romo Trail, and Needham Trail

DESCRIPTION: NEW LOCAL AFTERNOON HIKE!

Busy on Mother’s Day (Sunday)? Then join us SATURDAY for a quick local LATER AFTERNOON hike in the Needham Ranch/Gates King Open Space in the hills south of Lyons/Newhall Avenue.

This is a pretty easy hike distance and elevation wise – only 700 feet of elevation and 3.4 miles, but it it STEEP climbing near the peak – so that will get your heart pumping a bit.

This is apparently a new local hike option, so we’ll explore it for the first time as a group. Parts of it may be underwhelming, and some parts near flat, and we’ll be following the railroad tracks for a while before climbing, but what else you got to do Saturday anyway?

We’ll end up on the peaks overlooking the San Fernando Valley, just north of the 5/14 interchange.

Let’s meet up at 2:45 pm, and we’ll be on the trail by 2:55 – so don’t be late! Expect 2 hours of hiking, plus a short break at the top for a snack.

ALL TRAILS WRITE UP:
Experience this 3.4-mile out-and-back trail near Newhall, California. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 1 h 42 min to complete. This trail is great for hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking, and it’s unlikely you’ll encounter many other people while exploring. The best times to visit this trail are June through August. Dogs are welcome and may be off-leash in some areas.

ALL TRAILS REVIEW SUMMARY:
Recent reviews describe it as empty, peaceful, and not very exciting. The trail is noted to be steep but short, offering a beautiful view of multiple counties in SoCal. Some parts of the trail may be lost or washed out, but easy to find again. Conditions mentioned in the last month include blooming flowers, greenery, and cool temperatures in the afternoon. The trail is considered a hidden gem, with few other hikers encountered. Hiking poles are recommended, and it is a great trail for dogs. Typically in May, the area is likely to be green and cool, with blooming flowers, making it a good time for hiking.

Temperatures are expected to be in the low 80’s on Saturday.

Trail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need.

Trail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly.
