(free)+Camping in Julian/Anza Borrego . Hiking Calcite Mine Slots and “The Slot”

I know . .. super short notice.
But if you can . . . yay.

And ADDED bonus is Wildflowers will be in bloom all over!

This event has TWO options . . . (or three).

Option ONE:
Camping Fri and Sat Night, and Hiking on Sat
The itinerary:

Fri (eve):

  • Arrive AFTER 3 PM
  • Campfire hangout at the site
  • OR
  • Dinner in town at Julian Beer Co should have live music
  • OR
  • do both.


  1. We drive to The Slot and hike it. (it’s short) . . . then
  2. Drive to and thru the Galleta Meadows outdoor art installations. (get out and take pix) . . . then
  3. Drive to and hike the Calcite Mine Slot Canyon . . . then
  4. Drive back thru Galeta Meadows as catch the afternoon light. . . . then
  5. Drive back to camp OR stop in Julian again at different bar.

OPTIONAL if you have a 4×4 Font’s Point between #3 and #4

Sunday: (if you take the long way home)
Obsidian Buttes
Mud Volcanoes
Salvation Mtn
East Jesus
Bombay Beach
The International Banana Museum (if open)
The Dinos at Cabozan.


  • Go wine tasting in Julian area before going home.

OTHER Saturday Option:

  • Go wine tasting instead of the hike stuff.

Our Site:
We will be staying just outside Julian. Our site has pine trees. It’s not desert.

Space is limited

TERMS: The ONLY was to hold your spot is to fill out this solo use event form

Priority given to folks who have attended a prior trip with us.

New folks are very welcome too.

However . . . if you commit . . .this is a 100% NO FLAKE EVENT.

Yes. This event is free. Do NOT RSVP if you can not make it.

Campsite info goes out only to those attending.
The answer will NOT be instant. I will send out info on Thurs AM to those going.


  • 2 nights campsite
  • Propane campfires at the site.
  • Guiding to hike locations, and Galleta Meadows
  • Memories and photos for a lifetime.

Q What do I need to bring?
Tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad. Basics of food. and two bundles of firewood.

It’s a free event . . . I am not providing firewood this time.
Q What about food?
Bring your own and cook your own. That way it is what you like. It’s a free event . . . you were really expecting I bring the food too?
You can eat in town at Julian too.

Q I want to go but don’t think I am strong enough to do both hikes.
NEITHER of these are difficult hikes.

Q I don’t camp OR I have not camped OR I am a newbie camper. Is this a good start?
This one is a bit colder. But you will be OK. Just bring extra blankets.

Q Rain and Weather?
The weekend looks very clear.

Question: Restrooms?
There are vault near our site, and flush more of a distance away.

Question: Can I bring a campervan or RV? NO

Question . . . Can I sleep in my car?
Not at this site. It’s tent camping.

Question: Is my car next to my tent?
No Cars are in one place. And you need to walk into the camping area. There is an obstacle in the way. Cars are not on the campsite at all.

Ok . . . tell me about the wine option?

  • Volcan Mountain Winery, located about 2 miles from downtown Julian. With a vineyard and a cozy tasting room.
  • Menghini Winery. They produce Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Riesling, Rosé, Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah.
  • Julian Hard Cider‘s Miner’s Saloon
  • Mead Tasting at Golden Coast Mead.
  • Julian Wine and Chocolate Tasting Room
  • The Cooler Tasting room
  • Blue Door Winery
  • Orfila Winery Tasting Room

Trail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need.
