Fossil and Old Boney Trails – Intermediate Hike

Join us on this sweet (maybe not so sweet!) hike that wanders through grasslands and chaparral, down into a canyon, then up to eye-stretching views. We will follow Sycamore Canyon fire road until it intersects with the Fossil Trail. We will then take the Fossil Trail to the Old Boney Trail. The Fossil Trail features a hunk of fist-sized marine fossils smack dab in the middle of our path- we’ll actually walk on prehistory.

If it’s a clear day, we’ll easily be able to see Santa Cruz Island, as well as the Los Padres Mountain range. When we reach the Old Boney Trail, we will make a left and continue on Old Boney until it intersects with the Danielson Fire Road. We will then take the Danielson Fire Road back to the cars.

This hike will be approximately 6.5 miles with an elevation gain of approximately 1700 feet. Bring poles if you favor them.

DIRECTIONS:

Exit Ventura Fwy (101) at Lynn Road. Take Lynn Road southwest 5.25 miles to Via Goleta. Rancho Sierra Vista entrance (through the stone pillars and arch) is on the left. Drive to the end, and park near the restroom facilities.

Please review our guidelines to participate in our hikes. Restrictions apply for your safety and ours:

  • No “Plus Ones” on this hike

Trail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need.

Trail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly.
