Fish Canyon to Piano Box Canyon

Lets burn off some of that Thanksgiving feast by doing this 8 mile hike!
I have not been there since May so it will be partially exploratory since I did not check it out before. I have seen other groups going so I know it is safe and ready for us. In years past this has also been a great place for fall colors. Not sure now because it has been really dry.

We will need to leave the trail right at 1pm to allow enough time so arrive at 12:30 to get settled.
My suggestion is we also should turn back no matter where we are by 2:30-3pm to make sure we do not get stuck in the dark. I do not want us strung out so that is why I am limiting this hike to more experienced hikers. A beginner could come on their own or should start earlier in the day to allow for more time.
Distance: 8 miles
Elevation Gain: 500
Difficulty: Intermediate, no beginners as we need to stay together
Dogs: A well behaved, trained dog can join us as long as you do not expect us to wait for you
Restrooms: No
Water Fountain: No
Parking: Parking is free along the road
Trail: Out and back, uneven footing
Sunset: 4:46pm we should be back before then but please be prepared with a light just in case!
Weather: Rainy, windy or unusual weather will cancel the hike. Also if it rains a lot before the hike (hasn’t yet), I may cancel as it is a canyon that can fill up with water. Please pay attention to the weather the day of in case there are adverse conditions.

Known Dangers: Rattlesnakes, slip-‘n-fall, poison oak all can happen on this hike. If it does rain while we are hiking we would need to be careful as well (probably not likely).
Bring: a personal snack and plenty of water 2-3 liters minimum
Flashlight/headlamp to be safe
Sunscreen and hat is recommended because we will start in full sun.

Trail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need.

Trail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly.
