This loop will include a shortcut to the Coquina Mine in Las Llajas Canyon. It was formerly a VIP hike, however the shortcut has been getting a lot of use in recent years and I am opening the hike to entire group.
We’ll start behind a dam and along some lesser known trails above Chivo Canyon. We return via the canyon trail. Highlights along the way:
- Power shovel and other artifacts from a 1929-1935 limestone strip mining operation
- Fossils
- Tar pits
- Ranching remnants
Hike is about 7 miles with appx 1,600′ total ascent is rated DIFFICULT due to terrain. See the Hike Rating Guide
Directions
From the 118 take Yosemite Dr north toward the hills for 1.6 miles. As you round the bend you will pass the trailhead and the name of the street changes to Cottonwood Dr. Make a right on Westwood St and park at corner. We meet on the corner at 9am

Trail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated.
Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need.
