Backbone Quickie – Encinal to “The Tree”

Barbara and Sharon showed me this hike a couple of weeks ago, and it was delightful. If you’re deep on the waitlist for Cheryl’s hike, you may want to consider joining this one.

We’ll start at the Encinal Backbone trailhead parking lot, cross the road, and then take The Backbone Trail southeast for a couple of miles until we get to the place we often turn around when coming from Kanan Road. There’s “The Tree” at the gravel road crossover there. Along the way, we’ll see the plaque placed to commemorate the completion of the Backbone Trail in 2016.

This route has more than the usual amount of shade, trees that somehow managed to survive the Woolsey Fire. There are two or three water crossings each way, so prepare to get your feet wet with cold, clear water. There are also a couple of climbs, so this isn’t a Beginner hike.

Total distance: just under 5 miles, with a 600’ climb and descent.

Bring sunscreen, plenty of water, and wear sturdy shoes and a sun hat. Please consider bringing the 10 essentials ().

Our departure time is 8:30 am sharp.

Trail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need.

Trail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly.
