You don’t need to get out of the city to view the Perseid Meteor Shower. Anywhere is fine as long as there are no lights in your line of sight. For us city-folk, the Santa Monica Mountains provides some of the best viewing spots for watching the Perseid Meteor Shower.
I have selected Saddle Peak as our viewing spot. At over 2,800 feet, Saddle Peak is the highest peak in the eastern/central Santa Monica Mountains
We’ll get there by way of Backbone Trail near where Stunt Road, Schueren Road and Saddle Peak Rd meet.

This year’s Perseid meteor shower began July 17 and ends August 24 with a peak during the predawn hours of Sunday, August 13. We will be watching the show Thursday night and avoid the Friday and Saturday night crowds with their headlights and flashlights.

We will arrive early to catch the sunset over Malibu and the Pacific. There will be panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean to the West, and other ridges and peaks of the Santa Monica Mountains to the East and West.

DIRECTIONS:
Head toward the top of Stunt Road where it comes together with Schueren Road and Saddle Peak Road. Park in a turnout about 0.1 mile downhill from the top of Stunt.
