Meet at the Conejo Canyons trailhead next to the Thousand Oaks Recycling Center on Conejo Center Drive, near the end of Rancho Conejo. We’ll walk down the fire road to Hawk Canyon and beyond, taking the Peninsula Trail to Five Points. From Five Points, we will take the Western Plateau trail up to intersection with the Plateau Rim trail. We will take the Plateau Rim trail, the Peninsula Loop trail and the Western Plateau trail to the new bridge (where you can “Ooh” and “Aah” before we hike back through Hawk Canyon, along the creek, and back to the cars.
The total distance of this lollipop hike is about 5½ miles with approximately 800′ gain. Some of the sections are rocky; trekking poles may be advisable. If the rain is heavy on Tuesday and Wednesday, there may be a wet, but short, creek crossing and one potentially muddy spot.
On this hike, you’ll see the Conejo Airfield (honest!), Mt. Rex’s backside, at least two wrecked cars, some fennel, and maybe a rattlesnake or two. Plus, impressive views of the Santa Susannah Mountains (if it’s clear), two or three rocky canyons, and the new biotech developments nearby.
