TEHACHAPI MOUNTAIN

This Wednesday (8/31) I will be taking on one of the HPS peaks (Tehachapi Mountain 7960′). It’s a two hour drive from Agoura Hills. The trailhead starts out at 6039′ in the Tahachapi Mountain Park. Tehachapi Mountain is the high point of the Tehachapi Mountains, which dominate the northwest end of the Antelope Valley west of Mojave. The Tehachapis are near the southern end of the great Sierra chain of mountains, where the north-south peaks meet the Transverse Ranges and the San Andreas Fault.

DEBRIEFING: After the hike, I’ll be stopping at The Kohnen’s Country Bakery for a late lunch.

MEETUP DATE AND TIME: Wednesday June 23rd at 8:00 a.m.

MEETUP LOCATION: If interested in doing this event but our alternate meetup location won’t work for you, then meet us at the trailhead at 8:00 a.m. (SEE MAP) Be patient since most of us will be fighting traffic getting there from the alternate meetup location.

ALTERNATE MEETUP LOCATION: Those out my way can meet me in Woodland Hills at 6:00 a.m. and take off from there in a car pool. Meet at the corner of Leonora Dr. and Ponce Avenue. Ponce Ave. is the first street east of Fallbrook. We can park on Ponce which is not in front of any homes. We can load the cars up here, since there isn’t a car shuttle involved on this event.

DISTANCE: 7 miles

ELEVATION GAIN/LOSS: 2500’/2500′

TRAIL DESCRIPTION: Two miles of road and trail as well as some scrambling along “use” trails during this IN & OUT TREK.

THE PACE: We’re going to stay together, so no faster than the slowest hiker (a moderate pace).

DURATION: I’d like to get back to the cars around 2:00 p.m.

LEVEL: Strong Intermediate trekker

Trail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need.

Trail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly.
