The Keyhole 7 memorial bench was installed in April 2016 as a tribute to our friends we lost in Zion in September 2015. It survived the fire that swept through the area in May earlier this year. Let’s pay it a visit in remembrance of those we lost.
We will be taking the Garapito Trail to Eagle Rock and come back via the fire road but you could come either way if you know the area. We’ll be taking a break at Eagle Rock so bring snacks or lunch.

Don’s write up
Eagle Rock, located in Topanga SP, is the primary attraction of this hike. It juts impressively out from the hillside, with dramatic shear cliffs on three sides. There is easy access to the top of Eagle Rock from the trail. The usual route to Eagle Rock is via Topanga SP, but that would be too short for our group as we’re a bit more adventurous. This hike starts from the Marvin Braude Mulholland Gateway Park at the south end of Reseda Blvd. This will be a combination of trails and fire roads. We start off with .05 miles of fire roads and then take the Bent Arrow Trail to the Garapito Trail the remaining 3 miles to Eagle Rock where we’ll take a short break before returning on fire roads to our cars on Reseda. The Garapito Trail is where we get our bonus ab workout due to the necessity to avoid so many low branches. As usual bring ample supplies of liquid refreshment, snacks, sunscreen and dress accordingly depending on the weather conditions. Unfortunately dogs are not allowed in state parks.
Directions: Marvin Braude Mulholland Gateway Park is located on the southern end of Reseda Blvd. in Tarzana, 3.2 miles south of the Ventura Fwy. The park and parking are at the end of Reseda Blvd. There is a white line across the road to mark where the fee parking starts and an “Iron Ranger” to pay the fee. Park before the line for free. Be aware as there is a “photo-enforced” stop sign in the area.

PLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring snacks and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for poison oak, snakes, ticks, uneven footing, spectacular views, beautiful fauna all while interacting with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous, rewarding and fun.
The Farzan Rule: Posted hike times are the time the hike starts or we leave from a posted shuttle location. I’m aware other Meetup groups offer a grace period for late arrivals; we don’t. It’s your responsibility to know the location of the meeting spot and be there and ready to participate at the posted time. If you have any concerns about the directions feel free to contact the organizer of the event, preferably in advance of the event and not at the start time. I’m of the opinion that it’s not fair to delay an event when the majority of attendees have arrived on-time. (so named after a conversation I had with a certain un-named member)
RSVP’s: If you RSVP for an event be responsible and update your RSVP if your plans change. If your plans change at the last second and you’re not able to update your RSVP also let us know. In my opinion a no-show is someone who has no regard for following the guidelines we request from our members and will risk being removed from future events that have a limit.
