A little history:
In 1924, construction began on the ill fated St. Francis Dam, located in San Francisquito Canyon, about 11 miles northeast of Valencia. Its chief engineer was William Mulholland. Construction completed in 1926. By 1928, the dam was at its full capacity, it held 19 billion gallons of water.
On the morning of March 12, 1928, muddy puddles began seeping through the walls of the dam. Mulholland and his assistant, and the dam keeper, inspected the area and verified that it’s safe. Twelve hours later, at 11:57 pm, the St. Francis Dam collapsed. Its tidal wave killed 431 people on record, and hundreds more were just gone. Bodies were washed as far as Ventura, 50 miles away, and some were found on the shores of Mexico.
