Revisiting Cheseboro Ridge Trail – Gentler 5 miles, 800′

Since our visit here in March, the hills above Calabasas have become lush, brilliant green, and bright yellow with mustard, benefitting from the recent rains. This out-and-back hike offers a little-used access route to Cheseboro Ridge, which runs above our typical Sheep Corral hike. A combination of graded gravel and single-track trail ascends steadily to a high point with great visibility to Bell Canyon, Hidden Hills, Cheseboro Canyon, and Mount Boney in the distance. The wildflowers are in bloom, if you can shove aside the mustard far enough to see them. Last year’s patches of calabash gourds are scattered across the hillsides.

Lunch afterwards will be at the restaurants in the northwest corner of the little strip mall at Agoura Road and Las Virgenes, including Mediterranean Pita Grill and Sharky’s.

DIRECTIONS

The Morrison Ranch Road Trailhead is NOT at the north end of Las Virgenes, but rather, only 6/10 mile north of the 101 interchange, a half-mile north of the fire station, and at the northern end of a white fence. Set your GPS for 5526 Las Virgenes Road, Calabasas. If you’ve got to Thousand Oaks Boulevard, you’ve gone too far. Look for my Prius on the west side of the street. You may need to do a legal U-turn to park nearest the trailhead.

Trail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need.

Trail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly.
