Overnight backpacking trip to Whale Peak in Anza Borrego

This is an Intermediate level trip due to some off-trail scrambling up Smugglers Canyon and the fact that it is overnight dry camping (all water for the trip must be carried).

At 10:00 am (12/18), we will meet up at the Pictographs Trailhead (search “Anza Borrego Pictographs Trailhead” in Google Maps).

The backpacking route can be found on All Trails at https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/whale-peak-via-pictograph-smuggler-s-canyon-trail

We will camp on top of Whale Peak for a beautiful view of the sunset and sunrise before heading back to the cars (12/19). There will be no water source available from the time we leave the cars to the time we return to the cars so you must carry all the water you will need. (Recommended at least 4 liters of water.)

Trail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need.

Trail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly.
