Hill Canyon to Lizard Rock, New Bridge, Hawk Canyon – 5.3 miles, 1200′

I’m not sure I’d call this a “Gentler” given 1,200′ of elevation gain and loss, but at least the climb is right at the beginning, and it’s all downhill or flat from there. You can see the trail route here.

The hike starts at the parking area on Hill Canyon Road and climbs Canyon Overlook Trail. The trail is a utility road and becomes a ridgeline trail with spectacular views into Hill Canyon and to Elliott Peak to the west, and Mountclef Butte to the east, ending at Lizard Rock with its own amazing views. We then descend to the New Bridge, take the shady route partway through Hawk Canyon, then climb up to the meadow, back to the main intersection, and back north to the parking lot.

Directions:

From Moorpark Road in the Santa Rosa Valley, drive west on Santa Rosa Road for 3.7 miles, turn left (south) on Hill Canyon Road for about 0.6 miles to the parking lot.

From the 101 Freeway in Camarillo, take exit 52 onto Santa Rosa Road and drive northeast. After 5 miles, turn right onto Hill Canyon Road for about 0.6 miles to the parking lot.

As you may have heard, Meetup has raised its annual subscription rate yet again. I will have more of the snazzy “15th Anniversary” stickers which you may have in exchange for your support of our subscription cost.

Trail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need.

Trail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly.
