**Sunday, April 10, 2022: Hondo Canyon to Fossil Ridge via Back Bone trail**

**Rating:** **Moderate Plus:** **Trailhead Time: 9:30 A.M.**

**Description:**
**This hike is 8.6 miles round trip with 1,620 feet net elevation gain.** Hondo Canyon is a spectacular section of the Backbone Trail that includes rock formations, pleasantly shaded live oaks and a sloping green meadow we will begin the switch back climb up the steep south slope of Hondo Canyon through a beautiful oak forest and later chaparral terrain. We will then continue on the Backbone Trail to Fossil Ridge where we will have lunch and enjoy the wide-open vistas before taking the same route back to the trailhead.

**WHAT TO BRING:**
Two liters of water, lunch, snacks, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, hiking boots or shoes with good traction, hiking poles, daypack, long pants and long-sleeved shirt or shorts and a T-shirt, depending on weather. Rain gear, jacket and gloves in cool weather. Clothes should be loose fitting, and light-colors are preferable.

**FOOTWEAR:** Hiking boots or shoes with good traction. **Absolutely no sandals or open toed shoes.**

**MEETING LOCATION:**
The trailhead is located along Old Topanga Canyon Road 0.4 miles west of the junction off Topanga Canyon Blvd. We will meet at the Backbone Trail off Old Topanga Canyon Road.

Trail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need.
