Free Webinar on Hiking Safety and Technology

Use the Eventbrite link to reserve your spot.

Join experts from Montrose Search & Rescue (SAR) and Sierra Club’s Wilderness Travel Course (WTC) for a discussion on how technology has changed the landscape of hiking safety. Learn tips, tricks and tools that you can leverage to stay safe in the outdoors.

Montrose SAR will share real-life examples of recent rescues and provide insight on what could be done to avoid or address those situations in real time. WTC will provide advice on what hikers can do to stay safe while hiking our local mountains both on and off the trail, using modern technology as well as traditional wilderness skills.

Presented by:

  • Doug Cramoline, Montrose Search & Rescue Team Leader
  • Steve Goldsworthy, L.A. County Sheriff’s Department SAR Technology Director
  • Lisa Miyake, Wilderness Travel Course Instructor

About Montrose Search & Rescue:
Montrose SAR was started in 1947 by a group of Civilian Air Defense members who wanted to help those in their community that became lost or injured in the local mountains. Averaging between 130-160 calls per year, Montrose SAR is one of the busiest teams in Los Angeles County.

About Wilderness Travel Course:
For over 30 years, Wilderness Travel Course has helped build outdoor skills for hundreds of hikers each year. The ten-week course is only offered in the winter and includes classroom and field instruction on map and compass navigation, snow travel, rock scrambling, nutrition, and lots more. Registration for the January 2023 class is now open at https://wildernesstravelcourse.org/.

Trail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need.

Trail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly.
