ELINGS PARK & DOUGLAS FAMILY PRESERVE – First in a series of Santa Barbara Parks

BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.

The weather is now perfect to start a series of Monday hikes in Santa Barbara County Parks geared for beginners on up. The first of these will be in the Douglas Family Preserve and Elings Park.

DOUGLAS FAMILY PRESERVE: The Preserve is located on the mesa above Arroyo Burro Beach. The property spans 70 acres of undeveloped ocean-front land, and represents the largest area of coastal open space within the city limits of Santa Barbara

ELINGS PARK: It’s a 230-acre non-profit park located in Santa Barbara, California east of Las Positas Road and south of U.S. Highway 101. It is the largest privately funded park in America. The park consists of sports fields, hiking and biking trails, playgrounds, wedding/special event venues, and landscaped walkways.

MEET UP LOCATION AND TIME: Douglas Family Preserve in Santa Barbara at 9:00 am:

DURATION AND OBJECTIVE: We’ll spend up to 4+ hours checking out various trails in The Douglas Family Preserve and Elings Park as well as the beautiful Veterans Memorial there in Cedric Grove.

DISTANCE COVERED: Beginners can just do the easier Douglas Family Preserve loop which is less than 2 miles with 100′ gain and call it a day while the Intermediate Trekkers continue on to a second loop into Elings Park which adds an additional 3+ miles and 500′ + of gain.

PACE: We’ll travel as fast as the slowest trekker.

ELEVATION GAIN: 100′ for first loop and 500′ for second optional loop

EXPERIENCE LEVEL: Beginner on up. We’ll be on trails during the entire event

Trail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need.

Trail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly.
