Day Hike to Fisherman’s Camp in the San Mateo Wilderness

DESCRIPTION: This will be a Day Hike to Fisherman’s Camp via the Tenaja Trail to explore the trail condition and camp area prior to my Beginner Backpacking Trip on April 20-21. If you are already on that trip feel free to join me for a Pre-hike, Try out carrying your gear, Day hike with Pack to train for the Summer Backpacking Season or just come with a Day Pack and enjoy the hike. We will Hike 3.5 Miles to the camp and have lunch then hike back to the cars. The time may vary depending on the time we spend for lunch, I just want to see the trail and camp before my trip.

DEPARTURE TIME: 9:00 AM. As with all San Diego Backpacker Events, this hike will start at the designated time. Please arrive 10 minutes early to allow for parking and introductions.

ABILILITY: ADVANCED BEGINNER/INTERMEDIATE. These are merely descriptions of the hike, not a recommendation nor any assurance that it is suitable for your skill level.

DISTANCE/DURATION 7 miles total round trip 1300 feet of gain. Its 3.5 miles 2 to 2 1/2 hours One Way. 1300 Ft. of Elevation Loss going in to Camp another 3.5 miles 2 1/2 hours to 3 hrs. One Way and 1300 Ft. of Gain to return to the cars.

DIRECTIONS: From I-15 Fwy. Exit at Clinton Keith Road, and go west. Clinton Keith Road becomes Tenaja Road after 2 miles. Stay on Tenaja Road for another 8 miles to Cleveland Forest Road. Turn right on Cleveland Forest Road and go one mile to Wilderness Boundary and Tenaja Trailhead parking.

Trail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need.
