Let’s get out and hike before the festivities & fireworks begin. The weather forecast will be a high of 68-degrees. We can finally enjoy some cooler weather.
We will begin our trek hiking through Newton Canyon 2.5 miles until we reach Zuma Canyon Ridge road. Then we will continue on the fireroad with a gradual ascent up to Buzzard’s Roost. At the top of the view point we will be rewarded with ocean views and cool breezes. After admiring the views we will head back to our cars.
This will be an out-n- back hike.
Difficulty- intermediate, NO BEGINNERS PLEASE!
Distance- 8 miles
Gain- 1700′ (approximate)
Terrain- single track & rocky fire road
Restrooms- at the trailhead
Parking- dirt road, no NFS pass needed.
DIRECTIONS:
From the 101 NORTH exit Kanan Rd and go left. (Kanan turns into Kanan Dune Road at Mulholand Hwy)
Newton Canyon trailhead is on the right, just before the 3rd tunnel.
WHAT TO BRING: A POSITIVE ATTITUDE!
Lunch/snacks, at least 2 liters of water/electrolytes, Lug soles with good tread, poles if you like/have them, and THE 10 ESSENTIALS!

CDH POLICY: Any member with two NO SHOWS on CDH events since 2017 will lose their membership with CDH. Members will not be allowed on this and future events until they have updated their CDH profile by answering the new questions as well as having a recognizable face photo of themselves. This update cannot be done via an app, an iPhone or any other type of a hand-held phone. It must be done on a computer.
