DESCRIPTION: The area of China Flat and Simi Peak is in the Santa Monica Mountains This provides a 9-mile hike loop trail near Thousand Oaks. Generally considered a challenging route due to some steep slopes and terrain, it takes an average 5 to 5 ½ hours to complete. We will meet near a public park and then walk up the street @ 8:30 to the actual trail head. This is an exposed hike and not much shade so make sure to bring appropriate sun protection.
The China Flat area is in a wide valley in the Santa Susana Mountains, surrounded by hills and mountains composed of mainly of sandstone and shale, as well as other metamorphic rocks. The hiking trail from China Flat to Simi Peak passes through a variety of rock types and landscapes, including rocky outcrops, steep canyons, and grassy meadows. Along the way, we may encounter fossils, and other geological features that provide some great eye candy, not to mention wildflowers. We are also going to see if we can find the Back to the Future Part III — Delgado Mine Entrance that apparently was filmed in this location.
