SUMMARY:🥾Lower Zuma Canyon Loop - 🏖️🍷Happy Hour at Sunset Restaurant
DESCRIPTION:Zuma Canyon is distinguished for being one of the deepest gorges in the Santa Monica Mountains and unlike Topanga or Malibu Canyons has never suffered incursion by a major road. \nOur 5.6 mile loop hike begins in a deep cleft of the Santa Monica Mnts.\, then winds up a mellow ridgeline with gorgeous ocean views\, statuesque sycamores\, tall laurel sumac and scattered wildflowers. The first 1.5 miles is a workout with an 800 ft gain. If that does not leave you breathless\, the views will. \nWhile venturing through the canyon\, look and listen for the signs of life around you. Walk carefully along the trails and discover tracks of deer\, rabbit and coyote. Marvel at the delicate homes of funnel web spiders hiding in the earth’s tiny crevices. Listen for the shy wren-tit\, the “voice of the chaparral.” Though rarely seen\, its call sounds like a ping-pong ball echoing throughout the canyon. \nHike is rated MEDIUM. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \n🍹Post hike shenanigans will take place at The Sunset Restaurant by Zuma Beach at 6800 Westward Beach Rd. Westward Dr. Happy hour is from 3-9 \nSunset 7:43 \nDIRECTIONS\nMeet at the Zuma Canyon Trailhead parking lot at\n5721 Bonsall Dr · Malibu\, CA \nFrom trailhead to restaurant – 1.6 miles. \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. \nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly. \nThe Organizers and members in this group are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. The function of the member or organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who shows up for a trip/meetup (and their guest or guests) is responsible for his or her own safety. By attending a hike\, or any other event organized by this group\, you are acknowledging that you and any guests that you bring are aware of the risks\, dangers and hazards associated with the activity and freely accept and fully assume all such risks\, dangers and hazards\, and further agree to release and discharge the Organizers\, Members of the Hiking With Dean Meetup Group from and against any and all liability arising from your participation in the group activities per the ASSUMPTION OF RISK AND LIABILITY WAIVER.

SUMMARY:Zuma Canyon: Ocean and Canyon View trail Loop ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:This is an alternative hike to Peter’s hike on Thursday. It’s a bit far on PCH\, but we will meet at 9:00 AM. \nThe name “Zuma” is derived from the Chumash language and means “abundance.” There is an absolute abundance of beautiful and spectacular wildflowers engulfing the entire area and it appears that there was no impact from the Woolsey fire other than a few remnants of burnt trees. \nWe will start to hike the Zuma Loop trail and continue on to Ocean View trail. Then\, we descend down the Canyon View trail into Zuma Canyon for a bit. We will come back out of the Canyon and take a small loop around the opposite side. \nThis hike is five miles with an elevation gain/loss of approximately 800’. \nDirections:\nFrom Santa Monica\, Thousand Oaks\, and the San Fernando Valley\, drive west on Pacific Coast Highway somewhat less than a mile west of Kanan\, and turn right (north) on Bonsall Drive. Continue north into the dirt lot at the end\, where the parking is free. \nFrom Oxnard and points north and west\, you will turn left on Bonsall to the end. If you get to Kanan\, you’ve gone too far! The turn is just past the Zuma Beach parking lot. It might be easier to turn left at Busch Dr. (with the Italian restaurant on the corner) and then turn right on Rainsford Pl. and then left onto Bonsall to the end. The dirt lot at the end is free. \nPlease review the guidelines (https://www.meetup.com/The-Weekday-Trailblazers/about/) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPlan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace\, or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. If you are able to proceed\, it is expected that you will maintain line of sight with other members of the group at all times and help to promote the group’s safety and fitness goals.\nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you are taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. \nIf you choose to sign up for this or any Weekday Trailblazers Meetup event\, you are releasing the Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience.\nAll participants must be 18 or older\, or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

Here we will enjoy a snack break beside the shady Zuma Creek before hiking up the opposite ridge. We continue on this ridge for while then turn south on the Zuma Canyon Connection trail\, take this to Ocean View Trail and descend to the Bonsall Trailhead and back to our starting point. \n🌄The hike will be about 11 miles with a total ascent of about 2900 ft. 1700 of that is in the first 3 miles. Later there is a 1000 foot gain between mile 5.5 and mile 7.5. Hike is rated DIFFICULT.
