DESCRIPTION:April 8th 2024 is the last total eclipse in the lower 48 until 2044. What better way to experience it than on a backpacking trip? The Eagle Rock Loop is very close to the center and will experience 4 minutes of total eclipse. \nEagle Rock Loop\n27 miles 4100 feet\nUSFS Guide\nAlltrails\nFarOut\nGood YouTube video \nSaturday April 6th\nI’m flying to Dallas (DFW) arriving at 2:04PM (Frontier 1426)\nPick up rental car and drive to the trailhead (250 miles ~4.5 hours)\nI have rented a “mid-size SUV” so I’ll have room for 3 passengers.\nCamp near trailhead \nSunday April 7th\nHike half the trail counter clockwise (thinking of camp here ) \nMonday April 8th\nHike\nTotal eclipse at about 1:50pm (it will be hard to miss). I think we should be at Eagle Rock Vista by then.\nHike almost all the rest of the trail \nTuesday April 9th\nHike a few miles back to car\nDrive back to Dallas to catch 5:10pm flight (Frontier 2927) \nWARNINGS \n\nI have never backpacked anywhere other than California.\nThere is a significant chance of rain on this trip. April averages 6″ and 11 days of precipitation. Be prepared to hike in the rain.\nThere are many crossings of the Little Missouri River. The level can get too high to cross safely (see this video)\nThere are ticks and mosquitos. Spray your clothes with permethrin and bring insect repellant (DEET or Picaridin)\nIf you are flying remember you cannot bring fuel with you so you’ll have to purchase when you get there. Lighters and safety matches are allowed on the plane but not in checked bags. Power banks are also carry-on only.\n\nDISCLAIMER: Hike at your own risk. Be responsible for yourself and your safety. Make good decisions. With any trip\, things can change\, reservations can get lost\, the unexpected can happen. One of our members\, Jackie\, will be taking donations of items and is also looking for volunteers to help the homeless in the downtown area. Please consider doing what you can to help. \nShe is seeking the following donation items: \n1. Warm clothing\, jackets\, sweaters\, and blankets. \n2. Food items including perishables. \n3. Other items such as socks\, toiletries/personal care\, etc. \nYou can bring these items to her on hikes or at other events\, and if she isn’t there\, I can take them. The deadline is Friday\, the 15th\, so please consider donating some goods or your time\, as she is seeking volunteers to help\, as well. \nWe all know how cold it gets this time of year\, and it is the season for giving\, so please consider donating something\, anything\, if you can manage. \nAny questions\, just email Jackie via Meetup or post your questions here. \nThank you so much in advance for your kindness and a happy holiday season to us all.
