SUMMARY:A Trail of Two Ranchos
DESCRIPTION:On this one Chuck Dickens will be our invisible leader. We’ll do a loop around two Ranchos: Rancho Sierra Vista and Rancho Potrero. \nWe’ll begin and end on the Satwiwa Loop Trail. Rancho Potrero abuts the west end of the loop and includes grasslands\, coastal sage scrub with the Conejo rock plant association\, and riparian habitats. On clear days\, the coastline and Channel Islands can be seen from the old Olympia Farms site\, which is located mid-elevation on the property and still has graded pad areas from the previous use. \nHike is about 6 miles with 900 feet total ascent and is rated MEDIUM See the HWD Hike Rating Guide. \nDirections\nHead to the southern terminus of Wendy Dr and park on Potrero Rd. We meet at the Wendy Trail Head

SUMMARY:🌕Easy Full Moon Hike & Potluck at Olympia Farms
DESCRIPTION:No white lights allowed on my night hikes. Bring a red or green headlamp\, like this one: https://amzn.to/3VgjTWI \nOn a recent hike we discovered a great spot for a Full Moon Hike and Potluck. Its up on a hill overlooking Olympia Farms at Rancho Potrero. Atop the hill we’ll find relatively new picnic benches sitting on some old foundations dating back to the 1980s. \nIn March\, the Full Moon is the Worm Moon; if it occurs on or after March 21\, it is also the Paschal Moon. Tonight it will be 99.1% full. \n🧺🍷Bring food and drink to share. Since this will be an easy hike you can load up those backpacks more than usual 😋 \nSunset: 7:10 pm\nMoonrise: 6:55 pm \n⚠️No white lights allowed on my full moon hikes. Bring a red or green headlamp\, like this one: https://amzn.to/3VgjTWI. If your vision requires a white light\, do not attend this hike. \nAt 5.5 miles and with 850′ of total ascent\, I am rating this hike EASY+ — see the HWD Hike Rating Guide. \nDirections\nWe will meet at the trailhead where S. Wendy Drive ends at Potrero Rd. If you require a real address\, point your GPS to 1360 S Wendy Dr\, Newbury Park\, CA 91320 and park on Potrero. Look for the alcoholics wearing backpacks 🤪

SUMMARY:Feel the Peace\, Love\, and Joy ~ Intermediate Hike from Wendy Trailhead
DESCRIPTION:Let’s head out to the famed Peace\, Love\, Joy arch at the Danielson. This out and back hike wanders through grasslands and chaparral from the Wendy trailhead\, then climbs up Boney Mountain Trail for some fantastic views north to Port Hueneme and Oxnard and west toward the Pacific Ocean. If it’s a clear day we’ll easily be able to see Santa Cruz Island as well as the Los Padres Mountain range. If it’s really clear\, we’ll catch a glimpse of Mount Baldy in the distance to our east. \nAt the upper end we’ll visit the remnants of an old cabin and the Danielson Monument. The monument is dedicated to Richard Danielson\, the person who donated much of the land for the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area (SMNMRA). The hike will start in SMNMRA and pass into Point Mugu State Park. SUMMARY:Trail Restoration on the Guadalasca Trail in Pt. Mugu State Park (Sycamore Cyn)
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.\nNEED HELP:\ngo to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nWe have made a lot of progress on fixing up Guadalasca over the past 3 sessions\, but long sections higher up were devastated by the rain in December! This is a joint project between the Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council and the Concerned Off-Road Bicyclists Association\, and everyone is welcome to join in! \nWe will be driving into the park with 4-wheel drive vehicles. Transportation is limited so be sure to sign up to secure a ride in! \nAt this time State Parks is requiring all volunteers working on state park property to provide valid proof of vaccination against COVID-19. Please bring proof of vaccine to this event. \nWe’ll drive into the park from the meeting point to the work area at 8:30\, so be sure you get there early enough to have your proof of vaccination checked. \nAll tools will be provided\, as well as instructions on how to use them safely and effectively\, by experienced trail crew leaders. No experience needed – everyone works at a rate they’re comfortable with and takes lots of breaks. Bring a snacks and lunch to eat on the trail; we’ll break for lunch about 11:30. \nWear sturdy hiking boots with good lugs\, long pants\, a long-sleeved shirt\, sunglasses\, sunblock and a hat\, and bring water\, snacks. SUMMARY:Trail Restoration on the Wood Canyon Vista (Backbone) Trl in Pt. Mugu State Park
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO. \nOur trails have taken a real beating over the past 2 years during the pandemic. With hordes of people taking to the trails instead of their gyms\, and not being able to gather groups of volunteers to help fix them\, many trails are in dire need of repair! \nFinally we’re able to start addressing the backlog of needed restoration work\, hopefully before the winter rains do much more damage. \nWe’ll be working on the very popular\, rocky and rutted Wood Canyon Vista Trail\, sometimes just called the Backbone Trail. This is a joint project with the Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council and the Concerned Off-Road Bicyclists Association\, and everyone is welcome to join in! \nAt this time State Parks requires all volunteers to provide valid proof of vaccination against COVID-19. Please bring proof of vaccine to this event. \nWe’ll caravan from the meeting point to the work area at 8:30\, so be sure you get there early enough to have your proof of vaccination checked. \nAll tools will be provided\, as well as instructions on how to use them safely and effectively\, by experienced trail crew leaders. SUMMARY:Post Thanksgiving Hike- Danielson Monument
DESCRIPTION:Hi All\, \nJust a heads up: Barring extenuating circumstances\, if you sign up and don’t show up\, or change your rsvp to “not going” less than 4 hours before the start of the hike more than once\, you will not be welcome to hike with me again. Please and thank you for being considerate! \nMasks are mandatory as we gather at the trailhead and the monument! \nWe will again meet at the Wendy “walk-in” at the intersection of Wendy and Protero Roads in Newbury Park. We will head up the Overlook trail\, staying to the left at every option\, past the old windmill. It’s a steady climb\, but not too steep (the first one can be a little challenging\, but it is doable if you go slowly). We will turn right at the sign for the Waterfall Trail and then make a sharp left that will take us down into the Canyon\, across a small stream. We will climb again\, to the Danielson Monument. On the off chance that we get rain before then\, we might want to detour and check out the waterfall. We will return via a slightly different route and avoid the very steep\, slippery hill that we climbed. \nIf you want to bring snacks to share\, please consider Covid and bring individually wrapped items\, so people aren’t dipping into the same bags or containers. \nDistance: 6 milesElevation Gain: ~ 1500′Difficulty: IntermediateDogs: Not allowed in the state parkRestrooms: NatureWater Fountain: NoParking: Free at the Trailhead along Potrero RoadTrail: Single track\, excellent condition\, although some areas may be overgrownSunset: 4.43 PMMoon: Full moon\, but I’m not sure we will be out late enough to see it \nDirections: Take the 101 to Wendy Drive exit in Newbury Park and head south toward the ocean until Wendy Drive ceases to exist at the intersection with Potrero Road. Park right there in the free dirt lot that is staring you in the face. We’ll gather right there. \nKnown Dangers: Rattlesnakes\, slip-‘n-fall\, poison oak\, bears\, mountain lions\, heatstroke\, rabid rabbits\, whatever. \nBring:Flashlight/headlamp\, charged and ready to go!LOTS of H20\, especially if it’s hot when we start out.Whatever will keep you warm enough when the sun starts to set\, but we should be hiking by that point. There are a few slippery spots if you like poles. \nCOVID-19 DISCLAIMER / RULESPlease follow the guidelines under the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). https://covid19.ca.gov/COVID information for Ventura and LA counties:• https://www.venturacountyrecovers.org/• http://www.publichealth.lacounty.gov/media/Coronavirus/ \nYour participation means you agree with the observance of mandated COVID-19 safety measures and you agree to follow these rules: \n• Each participant will observe social distancing of 6 ft. among ourselves.• It is required to carry a mask and wear it through the duration of the hike.
