SUMMARY:Pratt Trail To Nordhoff Ridge or Peak
DESCRIPTION:Ready to earn those mountain views? The Pratt Trail is Ojai’s classic “no pain\, no gain” adventure—a 9.7-mile out-and-back beast that’ll have you climbing 3\,103 feet through Los Padres National Forest. When we’re at Nordhoff Ridge\, those who want to can hike the extra .75 miles/388 feet gain to the peak (details below). Plan on 5-6 hours of quality time with switchbacks! \nStarting just north of downtown Ojai\, you’ll begin easy enough\, paralleling a creek and enjoying some shade. But don’t get too comfortable. The first hour or two will lull you into thinking “this isn’t that hard\,” then reality kicks in with a steady climb. Rockslides have left their mark in spots so\, be sure to wear actual hiking shoes\, not your cute flats! \nWhat makes it worth the sweat? Jaw-dropping views of the Topatopa Mountains and Ojai Valley that just keep getting better with elevation. You’ll pass through diverse terrain—chaparral\, wildflower meadows\, maybe even spot some wildlife. Water flows in cooler months\, and there’s a eucalyptus grove to break things up. \nDogs are welcome (can be off leash in areas)\, and the trail is open year-round. SUMMARY:Lynnmere Loop from Camino Magenta – a Gentler (not Beginner) Hike
DESCRIPTION:Instead of our usual starting point at the Conejo Playfields\, this shorter\, gentler hike will start at the top of Camino Magenta\, in the beautiful unincorporated Lynn Ranch neighborhood surrounded by Thousand Oaks. \nBefore the mustard gets too high\, we’ll do a loop around the gated Lynnmere community and wind up back at our starting point about 5 miles and about 900′ later. Along the way\, we’ll see the nifty 60’s Teledyne Scientific & Imaging building\, Amgen and the Biotech corridor in the distance to the west\, and Montclef / Wildwood below us as we loop around the north side. There are two street crossings\, both at gated entrances\, so we won’t have to worry too much about auto traffic. \nIn some climbs / descents\, the trail has some loose rock – please wear appropriate hiking shoes or boots. \nAfterwards\, we’ll adjourn to Snapper Jack’s for a tasty taco. \nDIRECTIONS:\nTrailhead is at 1553 Camino Magenta in Thousand Oaks. Please consider ridesharing as the trailhead is in a quiet residential neighborhood. \n\nExit Ventura Fwy (101) at Lynn Road\, and travel northeast 1.2 miles to Camino Manzanas\, the fourth left-hand turn.\nTake Camino Manzanas 0.3 miles to Camino Magenta\, and turn right.\nPark in any legal spot between the intersection and the trailhead at the top of the hill.\nPlease be nice; avoid turning around in residents’ driveways if at all possible.\n\nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Towsley Canyon
DESCRIPTION:This outing follows a counterclockwise lollipop loop that blends wide canyon roads\, singletrack\, and ridgeline views for a well-rounded\, moderate hike. \nWe’ll start from the Rivendale Ranch trailhead and head up Towsley Canyon Road\, an easy\, gradual warm-up through oak-studded canyon bottoms. From there\, we’ll turn onto the Towsley View Loop Trail\, climbing steadily through shaded sections\, a narrow sandstone gorge\, and classic chaparral slopes. Going counterclockwise keeps the ascent manageable and rewards us with expanding views of the Santa Clarita Valley as we gain elevation. The high point along the ridge sits around 2\,400 feet\, offering wide-open vistas and a good place to pause and take it in. \nFrom the ridge\, we’ll descend into Wiley Canyon\, then complete the loop using the Canyon View Loop Trail\, which rolls gently back toward the trailhead without retracing our steps. The full route is about 5.4 miles with roughly 1\,100–1\,400 feet of elevation gain\, \nEcologically\, this hike is a snapshot of Southern California chaparral. Along the way you’ll see coast live oaks\, sycamores\, sage\, buckwheat\, chamise\, manzanita\, and scrub oak. In winter and spring\, wildflowers like mustard\, lupine\, and poppies often add color to the hillsides. Wildlife commonly spotted here includes lizards\, ground squirrels\, rabbits\, mule deer\, and a wide variety of birds such as red-tailed hawks\, vultures\, quail\, and scrub jays. Rattlesnakes do live in the area\, so we’ll stay alert\, especially in warmer weather. \nOverall\, this is a scenic\, rewarding hike that feels wild without being remote—perfect for experiencing Towsley Canyon at its best. \nHike is rated MEDIUM.
