SUMMARY:Belated Presidents' Day Hike at the Old Reagan Ranch
DESCRIPTION:An HWD Classic! \nThis hike is sponsored by Amazon https://amzn.to/2GnCP0a \nDuring the 1950s\, when Ronald Reagan hosted TV’s “Death Valley Days\,” he wanted a more rural retreat than his home in Pacific Palisades. So he bought a 305-acre ranch in the hills of Malibu as a place to raise thoroughbred horses and dubbed it “Yearling Row.” \nReagan Ranch (1957-1967)\, now part of Malibu Creek State Park\, is a delight for hikers\, who can enjoy the ranch’s rolling meadow land and grand old oaks. Trails loop through the Reagan Ranch and connect with the main part of the state park. We’ll use a combination of trails–Yearling\, Deer Leg\, Lookout\, Crags Road and Cage Canyon–to explore Reagan Country and the heart of the park\, including Century Lake. \nHike will be about 5.5 miles with 1\,000 feet total ascent and is rated MEDIUM. See the HWD Hike Ratings Guide – \nDIRECTIONS \nThe Old Reagan Ranch parking lot is on the Southeast corner of Cornell Rd and Mullholland Hwy \nIMPORTANT \nTrail statistics are approximate. SUMMARY:First Day Hike 2025
DESCRIPTION:California State Parks has asked me to lead a hike for their annual First Day Hikes. So join us for a picturesque loop hike into movie & TV history in the heart of Malibu Creek State Park. \nOur first stop is Ronald Reagan’s Yearling Row Ranch\, now part of MCSP. During the 1950s\, when Ronald Reagan hosted TV’s “Death Valley Days\,” he wanted a more rural retreat than his home in Pacific Palisades. So he bought a 305-acre ranch in the hills of Malibu as a place to raise thoroughbred horses and dubbed it “Yearling Row.” We will be hiking on trails that Reagan himself built. \nOur next stop will be Century Lake\, the location of the cliff-diving scene from the movie Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid and many other movies and TV shows. We’ll take a snack break there before heading into the site of Ape City\, depicted in the 1968 classic Planet of the Apes. \nAfter some monkeying around we’ll head back to the ranch passing Reagan’s pit BBQ where he entertained his Hollywood friends. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. SUMMARY:National Trails Day - Hike at the Malibu Reagan Ranch
DESCRIPTION:National Trails Day is a celebration of trails that evolved from the report of President Ronald Reagan’s President’s Commission on Americans Outdoors. In 1987\, the report recommended that all Americans be able to go out their front doors and within fifteen minutes\, be on trails that wind through their cities or towns and bring them back without retracing steps. The recommendation\, dubbed Trails for All Americans\, became the impetus behind several public and private parties joining American Hiking Society in launching National Trails Day® in 1993. National Trails Day is always the first Saturday in June. \nIn light of the history of NTD\, this year we’ll celebrate at the old Reagan Ranch \n \nDetails\nReagan Ranch (1957-1967)\, now part of Malibu Creek State Park\, is a delight for hikers\, who can enjoy the ranch’s rolling meadow-land and grand old oaks. Trails loop through the Reagan Ranch and connect with the main part of the state park. We’ll use a combination of trails — Yearling\, Deer Leg\, Lookout\, Crags Road and Cage Creek — to explore Reagan Country and the heart of the park. \nWe’ll also be visiting the exterior set for the long-running television show M*A*S*H. The medic tents have been removed\, but the location is still recognizable\, providing a rich experience for hikers. \n \n  \nBetween the MASH set and the ranch we’ll enjoy a short snack break at Century Lake. Part of the famous jump into the river by Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (Paul Newman & Robert Redford) was done by stuntmen at Century Lake because the river in Colorado seen in the film wasn’t deep enough to support such a high jump. \n \nOn our return to the ranch we’ll take a side trip to a scenic vista point at the top of Lake View Trail will It will provide us a beautiful view of Malibou Lake and the surrounding mountains. Reagan was the honorary mayor of Malibou Lake in 1953. \n \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS ABOUT 7 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,000 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED MEDIUM DUE TO TERRAIN. SEE THE HIKE RATING GUIDE[/vc_message] \nPost-Hike Lunch\nIslands Restaurant Agoura Hills\n29271 Agoura Road\nAgoura Hills\, CA 91301\nPhone: 818-879-8550\nOn the northwest corner of Kanan and Agoura Rd \nDirections:\nPark efficiently in the dirt lot. If its full there is street parking on both sides of Lake Vista Dr. (I drew those white lines – there are no lines in parking lot)

SUMMARY:National Trails Day - Hike at the Malibu Reagan Ranch
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]National Trails Day is a celebration of trails that evolved from the report of President Ronald Reagan’s President’s Commission on Americans Outdoors. (See note below) \n[content-egg module=Amazon template=item_simple] \n  \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS ABOUT 7 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,000 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT DUE TO TERRAIN. SEE THE HIKE RATING GUIDE[/vc_message] \nUPDATE: We have such a large group\, I won’t force everyone to cross the creek on the tree trunk/branches to get to MASH site. I will consider options at that time\, possibly continuing the hike without the side trip to MASH site. \nPost-Hike Lunch\nIslands Restaurant Agoura Hills\n29271 Agoura Road\nAgoura Hills\, CA 91301\nPhone: 818-879-8550\nOn the northwest corner of Kanan and Agoura Rd \nDirections:\nPark in the dirt lot. Reagan was the honorary mayor of Malibou Lake in 1953. \n[av_image src=’https://hwdmedia.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/03121839/Pasted-2.jpg’ attachment=’63834′ attachment_size=’large’ copyright=” caption=” styling=” align=’center’ font_size=” overlay_opacity=’0.4′ overlay_color=’#000000′ overlay_text_color=’#ffffff’ animation=’no-animation’ hover=” appearance=” link=” target=” id=” custom_class=” av_element_hidden_in_editor=’0′ av_uid=’av-suugwq’ admin_preview_bg=”][/av_image] \n  \n[av_notification title=’Hike Rating’ icon_select=’yes’ icon=’ue8c5′ font=’entypo-fontello’ close_btn=” cookie_lifetime=’60’ color=’orange’ custom_bg=’#444444′ custom_font=’#ffffff’ border=’solid’ size=’large’ custom_class=” av_uid=’av-380l96′ admin_preview_bg=”]\nHike is 6.5-7 miles with about 1\,000 ft total ascent and is rated MEDIUM.
