SUMMARY:Lower Sycamore Canyon on a Hot Day
DESCRIPTION:While the heat is once again with us\, we will stay fairly close to the coast and keep our elevation gain to a minimum. Temps are forecast to reach 89 at the furthest interior point of the hike\, which we should get to by 9:30-10:00 a.m.\, before the heat of the day. \nWe will start in the day use parking lot at Sycamore Canyon Campground and head up the dirt trail\, possibly as far as Wood Canyon. We may actually see water running in Sycamore Creek\, and perhaps from the spring in Wood Canyon \nThis out and back hike is a maximum of 8 miles with 535 feet of elevation gain\, less if it’s too hot. The hike will take place in Point Mugu State Park and Wilderness. It’s mostly single track and fire road. Dogs are not permitted in State Park wilderness areas. \nPlease bring ample hydration. The trail is wide\, but poison oak is widespread. If you don’t know what it looks like\, stay on the paths and don’t stray into the woods. \nNote: We will meet at the Sycamore Canyon Campground day use paved parking lot. Meet near the bathrooms. Do NOT leave anything of value in your car\, at this or any other trailhead. \nYour parking pass may or may not work; it’s intended for off-season use\, and we’re still in summer\, though school has started again. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. SUMMARY:Sycamore Canyon - Serrano Valley Loop
DESCRIPTION:This is a loop hike. From the Sycamore Campground parking lot we’ll hike up Big Sycamore Canyon for about a mile and then head east on the Serrano Canyon trail into a densely wooded narrow canyon\, with a lovely seasonal stream crisscrossing the trail numerous times\, and abundant wildlife. As we begin to gain elevation and the trail starts turning north a stunning vista of rolling grasslands set against the steep outlines of Boney Ridge begins to emerge. This is Serrano Valley \nWe’ll explore the Serrano Family Home Site. This was a large ranch back in the day. The area is strewn with old farm equipment\, water pumps\, home items\, and other artifacts. Trails may be a little overgrown in this area \nI first discovered the Serrano Ranch artifacts in 2013 after the Springs fire. The fire uncovered a bonanza of artifacts including home appliances\, tools\, etc. Check out the pictures here. \nWe’ll crisscross many of the old ranch roads and trails there. We’ll return to Sycamore Canyon via the Old Boney Trail and head back to the cars \nHIKE IS APPX 9 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,500 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT. SEE THE HWD HIKE RATING GUIDE \nDirections \nTake PCH to Sycamore Canyon Rd. Turn in and go to Kiosk. Pay\, park or hang out. We’ll be meeting in day use lot. \nSycamore Canyon Rd is 19 miles north/west of Malibu Canyon Rd. Its 5.9 miles south/east of Las Posas (you will pass by La Jolla Canyon). \nThere is a parking fee\, credit cards ok. There is additional pay parking at Thornhill Broom Beach – from there walk under PCH to meetup spot.
