DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, January 24\, 2024 (rescheduled date due to weather) -Out and Back Hike – Red Cliff to Nightmare Gulch\, Red Rock Canyon\, Cantil CA – a FUN DESERT ADVENTURE (Weather Permitting) \nHike leader volunteers: Paul H\, and Gary S. \nHiking Distance: ~ 6 to 7 ish miles\n**Hike Ranking: (*Level 2/Beginner/Intermediate)(see chart below):*) \nTime: ~ Approx 4-5 hours hiking including one snack break\nConditioning: you need to be in generally good physical condition\, OK with possible mud and rocks as well a possible water puddles. \nDogs : Dogs allowed only in picnic area\, campground\, and primitive roads. Dogs not allowed on trails. \nRestrooms: At the Trail head\nAdventure Pass: There is a 6 dollar fee per car\, but last time I was the the Iron Ranger Ticket booth was out of order. \nDESCRIPTION: The Club has traditionally kicked off the year with a hike in this area. In the past\, this has typically been a 10-mile loop\, but this year we’re trying a new 7-mile out-and-back option that hikers of all experience levels can enjoy. \nOur route is not entirely on a designated trail and will include traveling up a recently active stream-bed. We’ll begin at the Red Cliffs Trailhead and make our way to Nightmare Gulch\, where we’ll experience spectacular sandstone formations. The terrain is mostly flat\, but with numerous offshoots\, so it will be important for the group to stay together.\nOn the way to and from the gulch\, we’ll cross an open desert area that has already been brought to life by recent rains and warm temperatures. With a bit of luck\, we’ll be greeted by early wildflowers\, colorful scenery\, and capped off with unique rock formations along the way. \nWEAR: Expect cold windy weather in the Desert; hike will start early and may be chilly to start. Dress in layers\, bring extra outerwear just in case. We recommend winter hat/ scarf\, GLOVES!!\, a WINDPROOF outer layer\, sunglasses\, sunscreen\, hiking shoes/boots with thread and hiking poles. Also bring Snacks and 2 – 3 liters of water and electrolytes or salt tablets; camera\, hat and sunscreen. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, January 13\, 2024 – ALL DAY HIKE – Ridge Loop through Nightmare Gulch\, Red Rock Canyon\, Cantil CA – a FULL DAY DESERT ADVENTURE (Weather Permitting) \nHike leader volunteers: Paul H\, Gary S.\, Dianne H.\nHiking Distance: ~9 miles (Level 3/Intermediate difficulty)\nRating: Moderate ++/ Strenuous (experienced/qualified hikers only)\nGain/ Loss: ~ 1250′ / 1179′\, however we start at 2600′ shooting up to a 3000′ ridgeline\nTime: ~ Approx 4-5 hours hiking including one snack break\nConditioning: you need to be in generally good physical condition\nDogs and Kids: Not encouraged. Message Leader if you want to bring either.\nRestrooms: None\nAdventure Pass: Not Required \nDESCRIPTION: This is a geologically beautiful area\, only open part of the year. Our loop route is not on a fixed trail\, but does not include bouldering or difficult topography. The hike begins with a steep climb up and over three ridges. These afford some fabulous views of the entire area. After we climb down the 3rd ridge\, we’ll stop for a break at the East end of Nightmare Gulch. The rest of the hike takes us down through the Gulch – high walls and spectacular sandstone rock formations\, mainly flat\, but with lots of off-shoots\, so we need to stay together. At the exit from the Gulch\, we cross an open area of desert for a final uphill climb to the parking area. \nWEAR: Expect cold windy weather; hike will take us to 3\,000 ft. There are 400 flights of condors over this area every day. They love the shiny glass…they eat it and the feed glass to their chicks. Both can die from ingesting the glass. Needless to say\, as this stuff is not digestible\, this can kill them. \nIt is Easy work….bring a heavy plastic bag (like a grocery bag) to put the glass in. Wear garden gloves. Bring a low to the ground chair to sit in while you pick up the glass. Thank you for helping the condors survive. \nDianne will take away your bags of broken glass to recyle them. \nMeeting Spot/ Time: (34.535297\, -118.52569 GPS – put this into Google maps)\nOn San Francisquito Cyn Road\, at the lower Parking area\, near Power House # 2. The total drive is ~ 85 miles one way\, ~ 90 minutes. \nMojave (alternate) Caravan Meeting place (For convenience of those who live in Lancaster\, Antelope Valley\, etc.): If you want to drive to the trailhead with “the gang”\, we will be stopping briefly for a potty break/ McMuffin at the McDonalds on the corner of 14 HWY at Mojave – Barstow Hwy at 8:00AM. We leave from McD’s at ~8:15AM\, it is only 26.5miles from the trailhead. \nMEET LEADER AT TRAILHEAD ( 35.377332\, -117.980609 ):\nMeet at the Red Rock North Parking Lot (dirt pad on East side of Hwy 14)\, ¾ mile north of where Red Rock Canyon S.P. / Abbot Road\, joins Hwy 14 . \n!!!!! Be at the trailhead at 9:00AM\, so we can depart up the trail at 9:15AM SHARP.\nWe hope to be back at the trailhead by 3:45PM to return to Santa Clarita before 5:30PM. \nWEAR: Expect cold windy weather; hike will take us to 3\,000 ft. Likely to be colder and windy regardless. Dress in layers – you can always remove something if you get too hot. You can always leave a “just in case” jacket in your car\, if the weather looks better than expected.\nWe recommend winter hat/ scarf\, GLOVES!!\, a WINDPROOF outer layer\, sunglasses\, sunscreen\, hiking shoes/ boots with thread. \nFORECAST: Check it and we will also provide an updated forecast in Comments\, closer to hike day. \nBRING: Lunch / snack\, maybe a thermos of coffee\, lots of water (2+ liters)\, CAMERA\, hiking poles highly recommended for those ridges. \nLeaders’ Notes: No bathrooms at trailhead.\nAdventure Pass: Not required. \nDogs and Kids: Not encouraged.
