SUMMARY:Devils Canyon
DESCRIPTION:DETAILS:\n· Hike leader volunteer(s): Dave.\n· Meet: 200 yards before Chilao Visitor Center on Highway #2\n· Distance: ~ 6.75 Miles total (out and back style)\n· Elevation gain: ~ 1\, 745\n· Time: Approximately 3-4 hours hiking including a couple of 15 minute breaks.\n· Conditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition.\n· Dogs: Are OK but watch for ticks.\n· Hiking Poles – recommended\n· Restrooms – Trailhead.\n· Adventure Pass –Yes. \nDescription: A prominent sign marks the trailhead. The trail loses no time descending the hillsides as we pass through a forest of pine\, alder\, and cedar with great views of Devil’s Canyon and the surrounding mountains. Our trail crosses many small creeks. All the creeks come together so we can enjoy the sound of water dancing over boulders and cascades. We turn around at a backpacker campsite. \nHike Leader Notes: This is a very beautiful hike but the trail is brushy and has many fallen trees. To pass by the fallen trees you will need to climb over\, around\, or crawl under them. With the water comes bugs\, be sure to bring a bug net. Because of the brushy trail ticks could be a concern. On my pre-hike I did a tick check ever hour and found none. The hike out is mostly uphill but the trail has a nice grade and shouldn’t be a problem. \nIMPORTANT NOTES: We’ll hike at a brisk pace and ask everyone to stay with the group for a friendly and safe outing. Any guest that you wish to invite should join the Community Hiking Club (CHC) to participate. Depending on water flow\, we may cross streams. As always\, people may slip and fall\, encounter poison oak\, snakes\, etc. on this hike. This event may be cancelled due to inclement weather at the start of the hike. \nESSENTIAL GEAR:\nHiking boots and poles.\nClothing layers recommended.\nSnacks and 2+ liters of water and electrolytes or salt tablets.\nHat and sunscreen. \nAdditional Hiking and Survival Gear Recommendations (link) \nTHIS HIKE RANKING: Level 3/4\, Intermediate (see chart below) – mainly for the fallen trees and the uphill section. \nCHC HIKE RANKING SCALE:\n1. Beginner: 1-3 miles\, less than 500 feet elevation gain.\n2. Beginner/Intermediate: 1-7 miles\, less than 700 feet elevation gain.\n3. Intermediate: 5-10 miles\, 1000-2000 feet elevation gain.\n4. Intermediate/Advanced: 7-12 miles\, up to 3000 feet elevation gain.\n5. Advanced: 10-17 miles\, 3000 feet or more elevation gain. \nTRAILHEAD LOCATION:\nA prominent sign marks the trailhead about Angeles200 yards before you reach Chilao Visitor Center turn off.\nClick for map to the trailhead \nFILE DOWNLOADS\nWe highly recommend the All Trails app be installed on your cell phones and/or you print a copy of the trail map so you can personally navigate the trail if you need to. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY – IMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY:\nWhen you sign up for this event\, you are releasing Community Hiking Club from any liability or responsibility with your participation in this group activity. SUMMARY:Saddle Peak/Topanga Lookout Trails ~ Fun Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:This hike begins at Saddle Peak Trailhead\, a couple hundred feet to the right on the other side of the street from the parking lot. The trail winds upward gradually over switchbacks\, giving way as the trail heads up to a dramatic rocky overlook with striking views of the Pacific\, Stunt Ranch State Park\, Calabasas Peak\, and Old Topanga Canyon. There are also longer vistas northwest into Ventura County and east to the San Fernando Valley. We will see beautiful wooded areas and increasing views of the Santa Monica Mountains and Stunt Ranch State Park as we ascend. We eventually reach the Saddle Peak Trail via Backbone Trail and soon begin an easterly ridgeline walk high above the Pacific. This route will take us along and above spectacular tilted and pocketed sandstone formations\, with dramatic views of the mountains and ocean as we proceed. Then\, we will proceed to Topanga Lookout hike. \nWe will head up the Topanga Tower Motorway which crosses a junction\, (Fossil Ridge Trail/Backbone Trail)\, and continue up the paved road toward the radio towers atop the summit. When a wide dirt trail veers off to the left\, follow this track along the ridge uphill and down to the lookout. The large\, graffiti-covered concrete foundation at the site of the old fire tower offers amazing views of the surrounding mountains and landscape\, wide and far. There will be a little rock-scambling close to the top. We will take a short break at Saddle Peak and return back the same way. \nIt is about a 5 mile out and back trip with +/- 1000 feet of elevation gain. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 – exit at the Las Virgenes Road exit and go south (toward the ocean). Drive 3 miles to Mulholland Highway and make a left turn. Continue miles to Stunt Road and turn right. Go just about 3 miles and park on the roadside dirt parking on the right. \nPlease review the guidelines (https://www.meetup.com/The-Weekday-Trailblazers/about/) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPlan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace\, or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. If you are able to proceed\, it is expected that you will maintain line of sight with other members of the group at all times and help to promote the group’s safety and fitness goals.\nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you are taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions.\nIf you choose to sign up for this or any Weekday Trailblazers Meetup event\, you are releasing the Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience.\nAll participants must be 18 or older\, or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
