SUMMARY:Malibu Creek SP - Reagan Ranch to MASH and Forest Trail
DESCRIPTION:This hike includes 2 trails we have not done on previous treks to the MASH site. We will enter MCSP on the Yearling Trail but that is where this hike diverts from the ordinary. We will jump onto the Deer Leg trail to Cage trail which descends to Crags Road. From Crags Road we cross Malibu Creek (bridge) to the Forest Trail. The Forest Trail parallels the south side of Century Lake through a beautiful shaded riparian habitat\, past MCSP’s last remaining Coast Redwood (7 others burned in Woolsey Fire)\, to Century Dam. We then head back to Crags Road and the trail to MASH. But\, before leaving MASH we will explore the Lost Cabin trail which climbs to a view of Kaslow Natural Preserve\, behind Goat Buttes. \nWe will complete our western tour of MCSP by returning to the Yearling Trail via the Cage Trail. This hike clocks in at 6 1/2 miles\, 750′ gain. \nWhen I scouted this route on Saturday\, all of the trails were reasonably cleared of brush but I would not recommend shorts due to some narrow areas of “single track” trail. Also\, there are some rocky spots (trekking poles might be helpful if you normally use them). \nPlease review the guidelines (link to the guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPLEASE bring plenty of water.\nYour safety is your own personal responsibility\, but the hike leader reserves the right to ask you to leave if you come unprepared.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. If you are able to proceed\, it is expected that you will maintain line of sight with other members of the group at all times and help to promote the group’s safety and fitness goals. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you are taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. \nIf you choose to sign up for this or any Weekday Trailblazers Meetup event\, you are releasing the Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience.

SUMMARY:Malibu Creek State Park (MCSP) - Reagan Ranch to MASH
DESCRIPTION:This hike is a shorter/gentler Tuesday hike (5 1/2 mile\, 500′ gain) due to the hot weather forecast. We will enter MCSP on the Yearling Trail which crosses the grasslands of the former Reagan Ranch and meets up with the scenic Lookout Trail. The Lookout Trail climbs through a chaparral “forest” to panoramic views of Century Lake and MCSP’s central valley. The Lookout Trail drops down to Crags Road at the site of the Planet of the Apes village. We’ll take a brief detour to Century Dam and the very scenic and shady woodland at the east end of Century Lake. \nFrom Century Lake we will follow Crags Road west and cross Malibu Creek on our way to the MASH site. The mile or so from the bridge crossing to MASH is some of the nicest riparian habitat in the park. The trail crews have done a great job of restoring the trail which was badly damaged in last season’s storms. \nWe will complete our western tour of MCSP by returning to the Yearling Trail via the Cage Trail. \nKathy and I scouted this hike on Saturday and completed it in exactly 2 hours (without stopping). We’ll plan to be back at the cars by 11:00. All of the trails were well cleared of brush (shorts-friendly) but there are some rocky spots (trekking poles might be helpful if you normally use them).
