SUMMARY:Rancho Potrero trails loop in Rancho Sierra Vista/Satwiwa ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:To beat the heat\, we will start at 8:00am. The hike begins at the parking lot to the Ranch Potrero Trail\, turning right onto Olympia Farm Trail. We will check out old Olympia Farms Amphitheater and Picnic area and loop back to Ranch Potrero Trail. At the juncture of Sycamore Canyon Fire Road\, we will turn left onto Rancho Sierra Vista. \nThis area is pretty exposed\, but offers a nice ocean breeze a majority of the time. “Satwiwa” is Chumashan and directly translates to “the bluffs\,” which can also translate to “higher places\,” and is the Chumashan name used for a former village near the current culture center.\nhttps://www.conejovalleyguide.com \nThe eastern area is moderately flat and you will see bluffs to the west\, leading to a moderate hill. At the peak\, you’ll have awesome views of Big Sycamore Canyon Trail\, which descend from Satwiwa to the Pacific Ocean along a historic Chumash trade route\, as well as toward Boney. We will continue hiking the Loop Trail on the other side when we return to the Sycamore Canyon Fire Road and head back to the car. \nThis is about 5-6 miles with an elevation gain/loss of approximately 1000’ \nDirections:\nExit 101 at Lynn Road in Thousand Oaks. Go west for 5.5 miles\, and turn left\, under the Rancho Sierra Vista arch\, into the National Park. Drive to the end of the driveway\, and park near the restrooms. \nNOTE: Please review theguidelines to participate in our hikes. Here are some highlights – Restrictions apply for your safety and ours:\n• Don’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\n• No “Plus Ones” on this hike\n• Plan on completing the entire hike at moderate rate(2.5 MPH)\n• Please bring plenty of water. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. If you are able to proceed\, it is expected that you will maintain line of sight with other members of the group at all times and help to promote the group’s safety and fitness goals. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you are taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips.
