SUMMARY:The California Monarch Butterflies' recovery from near-extinction
DESCRIPTION:Join a virtual presentation by butterfly educator Betina Loudermilk who will discuss the factors that spurred West Coast monarch butterflies’ miraculous population recovery in 2022 from near-extinction in prior years. She will also discuss her own 7-year effort to create a [butterfly-friendly habitat](https://www.betinaslittlefarm.com/) and offer information and tips for attendees who want to do the same. This event will be held via Zoom on Wednesday June 8th at 7:00 pm\, hosted by the Conejo Open Space Foundation. COSF will send instructions on how to join the Zoom webinar to people who sign up (how to do this is described below) the day before the event. The number of attendees is limited so we recommend you sign up immediately! \nHer talk\, entitled “The Monarch Miracle\,” will focus on environmental circumstances such as habitat loss and climate change that caused the butterfly population crash and what influences—human and otherwise—may have contributed to its resurgence. \nBetina is the proprietor of Betina’s Little Farm\, site of her butterfly garden\, where she conducts workshops and events for families. She taught equestrian skills for a decade at Pierce College and has also served as a naturalist at the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium. “My goal is to inspire people to create connectivity through their backyards for our local bugs and butterflies\,” she says. “I want to get people interested in butterfly gardening so they can help out too.” \nHeld quarterly since 2019\, the [COSF Speaker Series](https://cosf.org/events/open-space-speaker-series/) has included climate authority Dr. Sean Anderson as well as wildlife experts Dr. Dan Cooper\, Dr. Seth Riley\, Dr. Jessica Sanchez\, and the National Wildlife Federation’s regional executive director Beth Pratt. \nTo sign up for this event\, go to \n[https://cosf.org/events/meetup/](https://cosf.org/events/meetup/) \nand fill in the form. While this is a free event\, COSF suggests a donation of $10. Your support for future Speaker Series presentations and COSF’s other activities would be greatly appreciated.

SUMMARY:Conejo Valley’s Changing Climate: Current Threats & Paths Forward
DESCRIPTION:Join a virtual presentation by conservation ecologist Dr. Sean Anderson who will discuss the threat of climate change to the Conejo Valley\, and what we can do about it\, in the kickoff presentation of the Conejo Open Space Foundation’s (COSF) 2022 Speaker Series. This event will be held via Zoom on Wednesday March 2nd at 7:00 pm. COSF will send instructions on how to join the Zoom webinar to people who sign up (how to do this is described below) the day before the event. The number of attendees is limited so we recommend you sign up immediately! \nAccording to Dr. Anderson\, we are living through an era of unprecedented environmental change in an area experiencing some of the greatest climatic transformations in North America. The Conejo Valley is now burning more frequently\, experiencing drier dries and wetter wets\, and seeing species fade away. While these and related changes are disturbing and sobering\, we are also ground zero for a host of approaches to building a more sustainable community which provide the seeds of hope. He will discuss the current state of affairs of our Conejo Valley region and ways out of the darkness in this presentation with ample time for questions and discussion. \nDr. Anderson is a broadly trained ecologist and conservation biologist who works on a variety of coastal zone management issues across California\, Louisiana\, the South Pacific\, and Middle East. He chairs the Environmental Science and Resource Management Program at California State University Channel Islands and is an elected or appointed member of numerous state\, federal\, and international governmental and scientific advisory boards. His energetic\, innovative\, and award-winning teaching and conservation efforts are often covered in the popular press and spawned the eponymous “Sean Anderson” character (played by Josh Hutcherson) in Warner Brother’s Journey to the Center of the Earth film franchise. \nTo sign up for this event\, go to \nhttps://cosf.org/events/meetup/ \nand fill in the form. While this is a free event\, COSF suggests a donation of $10. Your support for future Speaker Series presentations and COSF’s other activities would be greatly appreciated.

SUMMARY:Wildlife Rehabilitation at the California Wildlife Center
DESCRIPTION:Join the Conejo Open Space Foundation for a live online presentation by Jenn Guess\, Development Manager for the California Wildlife Center. \nJenn will tell us about wildlife rehabilitation and release at the Calabasas wildlife hospital. She will explain common reasons why wild animals end up being brought to the Calabasas-based CWC and how they are rehabilitated. She will also talk about small changes that we the public can make to reduce our impact on wildlife and how to handle conflicts between people and animals. The mission of the 23-year-old CWC\, which has treated over 60\,000 animals representing 170 species\, is to protect native wildlife through conservation\, education\, and animal rescue and rehabilitation. \nMs. Guess\, who started at the nonprofit Center in 2012 as a volunteer\, was hired the following year as an animal care coordinator and then as the senior wildlife technician supervisor. After almost 10 years of hands-on work in the Intensive Care Unit and Orphan Care Unit\, Guess was promoted to her current role of Development Manager. \nTo sign up for this event\, go to https://secure.lglforms.com/form_engine/s/T4jjfa4YQzmeCp2w2n7YHA?field_30=MeetupCDH and fill in the form. \nYou need to register with the above link 2 DAYS BEFOREHAND in order to have the Zoom webinar info emailed to you! \nWhile this is a free event\, we suggest a donation of $10. Your support for future Speaker Series presentations and our other activities would be greatly appreciated.

SUMMARY:The 101 Wildlife Crossing at Liberty Canyon: A presentation by Beth Pratt
DESCRIPTION:Cross-Posted from the Conejo Open Space Foundation \nRegister now for the first of the 2021 COSF Speaker Events. \nPlease join COSF for a live online presentation by Beth Pratt who will share news on the Liberty Canyon wildlife crossing. Her presentation will be on Thursday March 11th at 6:30 pm. COSF will send instructions on how to join the Zoom webinar to people who sign up (https://cosf.org/events/register/) the day before the event. The number of attendees is limited so sign up soon! \nWhile this is a free event\, COSF suggests a donation of $10. Your support for future Speaker Series presentations and COSF’s other activities would be greatly appreciated. \nBeth will discuss the importance of connectivity and wildlife crossings\, and give an update on the #SaveLACougars campaign. With the 101\, 405\, and other major roadways essentially trapping them in an island environment\, what are the future prospects for our native pumas? “As someone who spent most of my career working in remote wilderness areas\, my main priority is now urban wildlife conservation and creating co-existence strategies in our human spaces\,” she says. \nBeth has been the National Wildlife Federation’s California regional executive director since 2011 and is a lifelong wildlife advocate. She has spearheaded the efforts to raise funds and public support for a wildlife crossing over the 101 freeway at Liberty Canyon in Agoura Hills. The crossing\, which COSF has pledged $10\,000 toward\, will ensure the safety and genetic diversity of the area’s mountain lions and other wild animals. With Caltrans finalizing design and engineering plans in July\, construction should begin in late 2021. \nTo sign up for this event\, go to https://cosf.org/events/register/ and fill in the form.
