DESCRIPTION:Jackson Lake to Jackson Flats \nDESCRIPTION: We’ll meet at scenic Jackson Lake early in an attempt to minimize the heat and crowds as usual. The Jackson Flat Trail forks left at the Boy Scout trail junction\, and climbs up moderately to the top of the ridge and the PCT trail junction at 7400 ft. From here we’ll take the fire road into Jackson Flat Campground. Once here\, a short footpath takes you to an observation tower with 360 views – so bring your cameras! We’ll stop at the Jackson Flats Campground for a break and grab a snack before we loop back to the PCT on the North slopes and meets back up with the Jackson Trail down. \nDETAILS: \n\nHike leader volunteer(s): Tim R.\nMeet: Jackson Lake parking lot at 7:45 am\, departure at 8:00 am sharp (Sep 14).\nDistance: Approximately 8.2 miles.\nElevation gain: Approximately 1\,765 feet.\nTime: Approximately 4.5 hours hiking including a snack break.\nConditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition.\nDogs: Dogs are allowed.\nRestrooms: There are bathrooms at the trailhead.\nAdventure Pass: Not Required.\n\nIMPORTANT NOTES: We’ll hike at a brisk pace and ask everyone to stay with the group for a friendly and safe outing. There are no expected stream crossings\, exposures\, bugs or other warnings. As always\, people may slip and fall\, encounter poison oak\, snakes\, etc. on this hike. This event may be cancelled due to inclement weather before or at the start of the hike. Check the weather report and plan accordingly. \nESSENTIAL GEAR: Hiking boots and poles. Clothing layers recommended. Snacks and 2+ liters of water and electrolytes or salt tablets. They keep our trails open and maintained\, and much more. \nPlease join COSF for a live online presentation by geologist Dr. Thomas Davis\, “Trail Geology: A Look at Rock Formations\, Faults and Landscapes in the Conejo Open Space“ \nThom Davis is a researcher\, geologic map maker and author of geologic publications\, as well as an avid hiker\, WTB member\, and hike leader in the Conejo Valley. His talk will cover the rock formations you see in the open spaces\, what they mean and how they formed. \nThe presentation will be Wednesday\, September 11\, at 7:00 pm\, via Zoom. After the presentation\, there will be a moderated Q & A session for attendees. \nDr. Thomas L. Davis is a California State registered geologist and founder and director of the nonprofit Geologic Maps Foundation\, Inc. Dr. Davis has worked in and published on the geology\, tectonics and oil and gas sectors in California and Nevada\, Bangladesh\, Pakistan\, Myanmar\, Sri Lanka\, Colombia\, Venezuela and Mexico. He volunteers for the Wildlands Conservancy’s Wind Wolves Preserve providing geological advice and courses and has served as an instructor at CSUB for field geology classes. Dr. Davis is a graduate of the University of California\, Los Angeles\, and holds a PhD from the University of California\, Santa Barbara. Held quarterly since 2019\, the COSF virtual Speaker Series has included climate authority Dr. Sean Anderson as well as wildlife experts Dr. Dan Cooper\, Dr. Seth Riley\, Dr. Jessica Sanchez\, and the National Wildlife Federation’s regional executive director Beth Pratt. \nTo sign up for this event\, go to the registration page on the COSF website. For moderately to advanced backpackers due to the longer mileage\, several passes\, and extreme steepness and unmaintained nature of Baxter Pass Trail.\nThis hike requires us to shuttle vehicles between Onion Valley and Baxter trailheads.\nAdd yourself to the waitlist and I will manually add you. \nFriday:\nKearsarge Pass to Glen Pass\, to Middle Rae Lake (~12.5 miles\, 4K feet of gain\, 2600’ loss). \nSaturday:\nexplore 60 Lakes Basin\, camp at Middle Rae Lake again (4 miles\, 780’ gain\, 800’ loss one way x2\, so 8 miles total. OR hike 1.5 miles further downhill 300’ to Arrowhead/Dollar Lakes which are also very beautiful). \nSunday:\nhike PCT to Baxter Pass Trail\, Baxter Lake\, up and down Baxter Pass\, to camp at Summit Meadow (9 miles\, 2\,300’ gain and 2\,900’ loss). \nMonday:\nexit Baxter Pass Trail (4.5 miles downhill ~4\,000’ loss)
