SUMMARY:Liebre Mountain via PCT (Replaces Jackson Lake hike due to Bridge Fire)
DESCRIPTION:Liebre Mountain via PCT (Replaces Jackson Lake hike due to Bridge Fire) \nDESCRIPTION: The Bridge fire continues to expand so the road to Lake Jackson is closed as it leads into an evacuation zone (which of course we don’t want to enter). Relatively cooler weather should allow us to enjoy the PCT section up to Liebre Mountain. The forecast is mainly sunny. High 83F. Winds SW at 10 to 20 mph (which should help with air quality). \nThe trail is flattish and parallels the road for about one mile before it turns up the hill. There is not a lot of shade\, in the first part of this hike\, but we will be on the uphill section in the cooler early morning. As we climb a series of moderately graded PCT switchbacks we enjoy nice views of the Antelope Valley NE. After a few miles we take a short break at shady Horse Camp before continuing up through a more wooded area (oaks and pines)\, eventually reaching the ridge at ~5700′. Here there are oaks and sweeping views of the mountains/valleys W and N of us\, including Pyramid Lake and Castaic/ Santa Clarita to the South. \nDETAILS: \n\nHike leader volunteer(s): Tim R.\nMeet: Pacific Crest Trail\, Co Hwy N2 at 7:45 am\, departure at 8:00 am sharp (Sep 14).\nDistance: Approximately 8.6 miles.\nElevation gain: Approximately 2\,067 feet.\nTime: Approximately 4.5 hours hiking including a snack break.\nConditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition.\nDogs: Dogs are allowed.\nRestrooms: There are bathrooms at the trailhead.\nAdventure Pass: Not Required.\n\nIMPORTANT NOTES: We’ll hike at a brisk pace and ask everyone to stay with the group for a friendly and safe outing. \nESSENTIAL GEAR: Hiking boots and poles. Clothing layers recommended. Snacks and 2+ liters of water and electrolytes or salt tablets. Hat and sunscreen. \nThe Ten Essentials of Hiking (link) \nTHIS HIKE RANKING: Level 3\, Intermediate (see chart below).\nPlease only sign up to attend hikes that are consistent with your ability. Based on your hiking during the last 90 days\, how would you score on the CHC Hike rating scale of one to five assuming a brisk pace? \nCHC HIKE RANKING SCALE:\n1. Beginner: 1-3 miles\, less than 500 feet elevation gain.\n2. Beginner/Intermediate: 1-7 miles\, less than 700 feet elevation gain.\n3. Intermediate: 5-10 miles\, 1000-2000 feet elevation gain.\n4.
