This is the Angeles Chapter Wilderness Travel Course (WTC). Some of you have taken the course and are now leaders and/or knowledgeable hikers. For those of you who have not\, enrollment in WTC is something you should consider now. The Wilderness Travel Course helps build outdoor skills so hikers can be safe in the backcountry. The course runs for ten weeks and includes four field trips (two one day and two weekend outings). Students learn map and compass navigation skills for competently hiking off-trail\, snow travel\, rock scrambling techniques\, first aid\, nutrition and lots more. The course is followed by unforgettable experience backpacking trips most of which take place in the High Sierra\, Sequoia and Yosemite during the summer months.\nWTC moves you from being a day hiker to a more serious adventurer. SUMMARY:Mount Lukens via Dunsmore Canyon
DESCRIPTION:Mt. Lukens is the tallest peak in the Los Angeles city limits and it has spectacular views of the Los Angeles basin and surrounding mountains from the summit – so bring your cameras and be ready to take some great pics! \nThis hike makes a loop from Deukmejian Wilderness Park in Glendale\, ascending via the Crescenta View Trail to the Haines Canyon Motorway to Mount Lukens. Our return route will take the Haines Canyon Motorway to the Rim of the Valley Trail\, via Cook’s Canyon. Some downhill portions of the Rim of the Valley trail typically have loose rocks and soil as well as a few Yucca maize portions. Hiking poles and long pants are recommended for your comfort. Should be FUN! \nDETAILS: \n\nHike Organizer(s): Tim R.\nMeet: Deukmejian Wilderness Park\, Glendale at 7:45 am\, departure at 8:00 am sharp (Nov 16).\nDistance: Approximately 9.7 miles.\nElevation gain: Approximately 2\,772 feet.\nTime: Approximately 5.0 hours hiking including a snack break.\nConditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition.\nDogs: Dogs are allowed.\nRestrooms: There are bathrooms at the trailhead.\nAdventure Pass: Required.\n\nIMPORTANT NOTES: We’ll hike at a brisk pace and ask everyone to stay with the group for a friendly and safe outing. This is the Angeles Chapter Wilderness Travel Course (WTC). Some of you have taken the course and are now leaders and/or knowledgeable hikers. For those of you who have not\, enrollment in WTC is something you should consider now. The Wilderness Travel Course helps build outdoor skills so hikers can be safe in the backcountry. The course runs for ten weeks and includes four field trips (two one day and two weekend outings). Students learn map and compass navigation skills for competently hiking off-trail\, snow travel\, rock scrambling techniques\, first aid\, nutrition and lots more. The course is followed by unforgettable experience backpacking trips most of which take place in the High Sierra\, Sequoia and Yosemite during the summer months.\nWTC moves you from being a day hiker to a more serious adventurer.
