SUMMARY:Newton Canyon - Gentler Friendly Hike
DESCRIPTION:From the Kanan Rd trailhead\, we’ll jump on the Backbone Trail for a cruise down into Newton Canyon. On our way there\, we’ll cross the creek\, pass under an oak canopy\, and come out into an opening. At the opening\, look toward the sandstone formations in the distance\, and you’ll see the now-maybe-flowing Upper Newton Falls spilling through them like a ribbon. \nThis is an out and back hike at a total of about 5 miles\, with about 1000′ total elevation gain. \nThis is a gentler hike. We will go at a more moderate pace on Thursdays than a regular Tuesday Trailblazer hike\, and we’ll take a break at our turnaround. Faster hikers are welcome to come along\, with the understanding that the hike is geared toward those who want to go at an easier pace. \nDirections: \nExit 101\, then go south (toward beaches) on Kanan Road about 8 miles to just before the third tunnel (T1). The parking lot is on the right. \nFrom Pacific Coast Highway\, go north on Kanan Dume Road about 4 miles and make a left turn into the parking lot immediately after going through the first tunnel. \nParking is free. \nBring sunscreen\, plenty of water\, and wear sturdy shoes and a sun hat. SUMMARY:Adventure Hike: Upper Zuma Falls
DESCRIPTION:I normally reserve this hike for the HWD VIPs\, but this month I am inviting all HWD members. VIPs are members that have made a donation or assisted with trail work. For more info see https://www.hikingwithdean.com/vip-circle/ \nWe will begin by hiking northwest on the Backbone Trail to Upper Zuma Canyon. Our first stop will be Newton Canyon Falls\, a beautiful waterfall in a lush\, forested grotto with moss-covered rocks. \nNewton Falls is just the appetizer. Our main course will be Upper Zuma Falls. While on the main trail it can be seen from the distance. However\, back in 2010\, we did an exploratory hike and found a path to the base of the falls. Although we will be hiking off the main trail to get to the falls\, the way has become popular and is now relatively clear of obstacles. \nAfter visiting the falls\, we’ll return to the trail and continue to Zuma-Trancas Ridge\, turn north\, and take my (still) secret trail I found in 2011 to to the top of the falls. We’ll take a snack break by the pool at the top of the falls. \nBring the usual stuff\, but most importantly\, bring a sense of adventure! Wear long pants. \nHIKE IS ABOUT 7 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,350 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT DUE TO TERRAIN. SEE THE HIKE RATING GUIDE \nDirections\nNote: Parking is limited. Please use use Kanan Park and Ride for carpooling: 29166 Roadside Dr\, Agoura Hills\, CA 91301 \nIMPORTANT \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. \nBring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. Trail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly. \nThe Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. The function of the member or organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who shows up for a trip/meetup (and their guest or guests) is responsible for his or her own safety.
