SUMMARY:Wildwood Central Park ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Wildwood Park in Thousand Oaks is one of the most versatile local parks there is\, with 27 miles of trails skittering through rocky cliffs\, cacti-filled desert environs\, volcanic rock\, riparian forest\, and a cool\, watery canyon. Highlights of the hike include waterfalls incorporating 40’ Paradise waterfalls along with a long creek\, Indian caves\, volcanic rock cliffs\, and wildflowers throughout. Wildwood’s archetypal western look served as the set for The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train back in the day\, as well as the movie Spartacus. Currently\, it’s very beautiful with an abundance of wildflowers and California poppies in addition to powerful waterfalls. \nIt will start at Moonridge Trail and pass through various trails with bridges\, waterfalls\, crossing streams and tree canopies over approximately 5-6 miles with about a 1000’ elevation gain/loss. \nDirections:\nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road and continue 2.6 miles to Avenida De Los Arboles\, then turn left. Continue for about a mile to the end and turn into the Wildwood parking lot on the left. \nFrom the 118\, travel west to the 23\, exit at Avenida De Los Arboles and turn right. Drive further than you remember having to drive to this trailhead (10 or 15 minutes). Turn left into the parking lot when the road ends. \nPlease review the guidelines (link to the guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPlan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace**\,** or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. If you are able to proceed\, it is expected that you will maintain line of sight with other members of the group at all times and help to promote the group’s safety and fitness goals. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. SUMMARY:Ray Miller Trail hike ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:The trail is an awesome blend of ocean and mountain views in Malibu’s La Jolla Canyon. We will start from the trailhead which follows the canyon eastward\, away from the ocean. Then\, it quickly brings you back toward the ocean at a gradual incline. There’s a great lookout spot where it gives you a breathtaking view of the Pacific Coast Highway against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean\, with sweeping views toward Mugu Rock on the west and Sycamore Cove on the east. After another peak\, you’ll start a slight decline that brings you to the fire road where we will turn around. Along the way\, we’ll be treated to magnificent sweeping views of La Jolla and Big Sycamore Canyons\, and of course\, the largest ocean in the world. On a clear day\, the Channel Islands are easily within sight\, although the marine layer has been pretty prominent this summer.\nThis is a 5-6 mile out and back hike with an elevation gain/loss of about 1000’. \nDirections: \nFrom Los Angeles\, take the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) north\, 22 miles from Malibu Canyon Rd. Across the street from Thornhill Broome Beach is the entrance to La Jolla Canyon. It is very clearly marked. Turn right. \nFrom Ventura\, take PCH eastward\, and turn left 4 miles after Las Posas Road into La Jolla Canyon. \nHeads up: There is a parking fee in the lot (or free with state parking pass). There is free parking on PCH just a short walk to the trailhead. \nPlease review the guidelines (guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPlan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace.\nPlease consider bringing mosquito spray as they may be present.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. For now 9:00 is the only option but sometimes they add another boat if it fills up (OUTBOUND)\, We will return on the 4:30 PM boat (INBOUND) getting to Ventura Harbor at 5:45. \nThere will be no limitations for our hike because Island Packers will only take as many as the boat can hold so you can bring as many friends as you like. Please book your passage before you sign-up with WeekdayTrailblazers on Meetup\, as the boat may fill-up. You don’t need to sign-up your friends on Meetup. \nThe trip by boat lasts a little over an hour leaving Ventura Harbor at 9:00 AM. You need to get to Ventura Harbor about 8:15. They want us to be at the dock 45 minutes prior to departure (8:15 AM). Once we arrive on the Island\, we’ll hike 2.5 miles out to Potato Harbor via Cavern Point\, and return along Potato Harbor Road. When we reach the camp ground we’ll have lunch. Bring your own lunch. The hike is very moderate and we should have plenty of time for lunch and some sightseeing at the historic ranch\, museum\, or extra hiking into Scorpion Canyon. Our return trip leaves Scorpion Anchorage at 4:30 PM. \nYou must bring your own WATER and FOOD. There are no concessions on the island. You can drop your food in one of their protective boxes so you don’t have to carry it on the hike. You will also have to book your own passage on the boat. The price (RT) is $67 for age 55+ and $72 for the younger crowd. PLEASE BOOK YOUR TRIP BEFORE YOU SIGN-UP WITH TRAILBLAZERS. Feel free to bring a guest. SUMMARY:Rancho Sierra Vista Hidden Pond Hike - Intermediate Hike - 9:00 AM Start
DESCRIPTION:We will meet near the bathrooms in the parking lot. We will hike down Sycamore Canyon and then take Ranch Center Road to the Hidden Pond trail. From there\, we will take Hidden Pond trail and hopefully we will see a little water in the pond. After stopping at the pond for a brief break we will return to the cars. We will take Ranch Center Road to Sycamore Canyon Road and (unfortunately) up the asphalt to Satwiwa\, the RSV parking lot\, and our cars. \nThis out and back hike will be 7.5 miles with 1300 feet of elevation gain. \nFrom Steve J’s January\, 2019 hike description:\nLocal ranching history in the western Santa Monica Mountains (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa_Monica_Mountains) began in 1803 when former soldiers Jose Polanco and Ignacio Rodriquez were granted Rancho El Conejo (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rancho_El_Conejo) by the King of Spain. \nHidden Pond in Dry Times:\nTen years before the Danielsons appeared on the scene\, wealthy petroleum geologist Carl Beal purchased the northern section of the old rancho in 1936 and christened the area Rancho Sierra Vista. Beal explored the ranch for water and developed a system of dams\, wells\, springs\, and reservoirs that provided the water for a variety of agricultural products and horses. He was the person responsible for building 25 miles of roads and 18 wells feeding the 14 miles of steel pipe that is seen alongside today’s trails. \nHidden Pond was used store water for the staff and livestock of the ranch. The network of pipes leads up to the pond from the house and other areas in Point Mugu State Park and SMMNRA. The pond is at a high point in the hills\, providing gravity-fed water to outlying areas\, but requiring that water be pumped uphill to the pond during wetter times. The ruins of the pumps and other equipment can be seen nearby at the ranch ruins at the west end of Ranch Center Road. \nNOTE: Please review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. Here are some highlights and a link to the guidelines:\nhttps://www.meetup.com/The-Weekday-Trailblazers/about/\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours:\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nPlan on completing the entire hike at an intermediate pace or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo dogs allowed. \nDo NOT leave anything of value in your car\, at this or any other trailhead. \nDIRECTIONS: \nExit Ventura Fwy (101) at Lynn Road. Take Lynn Road southwest 5.25 miles to Via Goleta. Rancho Sierra Vista entrance (through the stone pillars and arch) is on the left. Drive to the end\, and park near the restroom facilities. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Ventura Land Trust Trail\, Ventura CA
DESCRIPTION:Ventura Land Trust has opened up a new trail in Ventura\, just above the high school where the trail work has been going on for four years and it’s finally open. The hike is similar to the Ray Miller Trail\, i.e. It is 6 miles out and back. Right now it is a beautiful hike with lots of wildflowers and the views are beautiful. I could not find any limitation on number of attendees\, but another leader usually limits it to 10 people so I am limiting it to 15 until we learn more. We start off at the parking lot at the end of Hall Canyon Road and hike up to the communication tower and then back. \nTake the 101 Ventura and exit Seward. Go north (away from the ocean). Go past Thompson and Main St. to Poli. Take a left on Poli and almost immediately make a sharp right turn onto Hall Canyon Road. Stay on Hall Canyon Road (do not turn on Fairview or Sunset) and Hall Canyon turns into a street that has some traffic bumps\, follow that for less than quarter mile to the parking lot. \nPlease review the guidelines (link to the guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPlan on completing the entire hike at a moderate pace.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:8 mile ~ Encinal Canyon to Top of the World ~ Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:Encinal Canyon is named for encina\, the Spanish word for the holm oak\, a lovely Mediterranean tree with holly characteristics. Holm oaks are one of the main trees used to establish truffle orchards\, but we’ll be nosing around the canyon strictly for its beauty. \nThe trail from Encinal is a smooth\, firm\, and well-traveled single track\, swooping and winding with a constant\, gentle slope. We’ll have fabulous views of the coast for much of the way. Close to the top\, we’ll take on the slightly steeper Etz Meloy Motorway\, then the last tenth of a mile is up a seldom-used trail to the isolated peak\, where we’ll both lose and catch our breath with a 360-degree view. \nFrom our perch above it all we’ll see Sandstone Peak to the west\, Simi Valley to the north\, Ladyface and Mt Baldy to the east and the Channel Islands to the south and west. \nThis is a 8 mile out and back hike\, with about 1200′ of elevation gain. \nNOTE: Please review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. We’ll do a big lollipop loop along the creekside trails\, and wind back at the cars about 5 miles / 600 ft. later. \nNOTE: Please review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. SUMMARY:Lynnmere Loop from Camino Magenta – a Gentler (not Beginner) Hike
DESCRIPTION:Instead of our usual starting point at the Conejo Playfields\, this shorter\, gentler hike will start at the top of Camino Magenta\, in the beautiful unincorporated Lynn Ranch neighborhood surrounded by Thousand Oaks. \nBefore the mustard gets too high\, we’ll do a loop around the gated Lynnmere community and wind up back at our starting point about 5 miles and about 900′ later. Along the way\, we’ll see the nifty 60’s Teledyne Scientific & Imaging building\, Amgen and the Biotech corridor in the distance to the west\, and Montclef / Wildwood below us as we loop around the north side. There are two street crossings\, both at gated entrances\, so we won’t have to worry too much about auto traffic. \nIn some climbs / descents\, the trail has some loose rock – please wear appropriate hiking shoes or boots. \nAfterwards\, we’ll adjourn to Snapper Jack’s for a tasty taco. \nDIRECTIONS:\nTrailhead is at 1553 Camino Magenta in Thousand Oaks. Please consider ridesharing as the trailhead is in a quiet residential neighborhood. \n\nExit Ventura Fwy (101) at Lynn Road\, and travel northeast 1.2 miles to Camino Manzanas\, the fourth left-hand turn.\nTake Camino Manzanas 0.3 miles to Camino Magenta\, and turn right.\nPark in any legal spot between the intersection and the trailhead at the top of the hill.\nPlease be nice; avoid turning around in residents’ driveways if at all possible.\n\nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. There are also longer vistas northwest into Ventura County and east to the San Fernando Valley. The route passes through riparian forest\, open fields\, and interesting sandstone formations. \nhttps://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/c/3/a/c/event_261290092.jpeg \nOur hike begins on the Stunt High Trail\, a winding single-file track that provides a varying but moderate uphill ascent in a southwesterly direction for about 2.5 miles. Early in the hike\, there are beautiful wooded areas and a small stream\, and then increasing views of the Santa Monica Mountains and Stunt Ranch State Park as we ascend. We eventually reach the Backbone Trail and soon begin an easterly ridgeline walk high above the Pacific. This route will take us along and above spectacular tilted and pocketed sandstone formations\, with dramatic views of the mountains and ocean as we proceed. There will be some very light rock-hopping. We will take a short break at Saddle Peak and return the same way. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 – exit at the Las Virgenes Road exit and go south (toward the ocean). Drive 3 miles to Mulholland Highway and make a left turn. Continue 4 miles to Stunt Road and turn right. Go one mile\, and park and meet in the dirt pullout on the right. \nFrom the PCH – turn up Malibu Canyon Road and drive 6.5 miles to Mulholland Highway. Turn right and continue 4 miles to Stunt Road. Turn right and drive one mile. Park and meet in the dirt pullout on the right. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Sulphur Mountain’s Trail near Ojai
DESCRIPTION:We will hike Sulpher Mountain trail on Thursday. This trail is hard to post because after it rains it is too muddy\, then it gets too hot but right now it is PERFECT. Also\, there is a new restaurant owner at the old J&M Cafe and he is really great. The restaurant is in Oak View\, just 5 minutes off the trail up Hwy. 33. It is called Noa’s. This hike goes up the Sulpher Mountain fire road\, through petroleum-scented oak forest\, through the cattle grazing ranch land at the top to the overlook above the town of Oak View. We’ll have spectacular views of the Ojai Valley\, Lake Casitas\, and the mountains to the north and everything is very green. Our gently-sloping route will be approximately 6 miles\, with about 1000’ of elevation. \nParking is limited on Sulphur Mountain Road\, and it’s well outside our typical hiking area\, so carpooling is encouraged! \nLunch afterwards at Noa’s Cafe\, a mile north on 33 in Oak View\, on the right. (formerly J&M Cafe) \nOur usual restrictions apply – no plus-ones; no dogs; only show up if you’re on the “Attending” list.
