SUMMARY:Los Pinetos To May Peak or Camp Nine
DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION:\nThis adventurous out-and-back trek whisks you from Placerita Canyon’s peaceful oak groves into the wild heart of the Angeles National Forest\, with Camp Nine—a remote wildland firefighting station perched on Bear Divide—as your prize. Or stop at May Peak for a shorter intermediate hike if you like (see details below). \nYou’ll ease into things with a friendly stroll along the Canyon Trail before Los Pinetos Trail decides to get serious. Mile three is where this hike flexes its muscles with a heart pumping 700-foot climb that’ll have you questioning your life choices—at least until the trail mercifully ducks under a canopy of shady oaks as you approach Wilson Saddle. \nFrom the saddle\, fire road 3N17 leads you onward to Camp Nine\, where you’ve earned every bite of that summit sandwich before turning around and heading home. This roughly 12-mile round-tripper delivers big rewards: sweeping mountain panoramas\, dramatic landscape shifts from sunbaked chaparral to cool forest corridors\, and a peek at the backcountry infrastructure that keeps these mountains from going up in smoke. Just know what you’re signing up for—over 1\,100 feet of elevation gain in four miles\, rocky and occasionally cranky trail conditions\, and exposed stretches that laugh at your sunscreen. \nDETAILS:\nHike leader volunteer(s): Tim R. \n\nMeet: 19798 Placerita Canyon Rd\, at 6:45 am\, departure at 7:00 am sharp (Mar 14).\nDistance: Approximately 9.6/11.7 miles.\nElevation gain: Approximately 2\,333/2\,470 feet.\nTime: Approximately 6.0 hours hiking including a snack break.\nConditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition.\nDogs: Dogs are allowed.\nRestrooms: There are bathrooms at the trailhead.\nAdventure Pass: Required.\n\nIMPORTANT NOTES: We’ll hike at a brisk pace and ask everyone to stay with the group for a friendly and safe outing. There may be stream crossings\, exposures\, bugs or other warnings. As always\, people may slip and fall\, encounter poison oak\, snakes\, etc. on this hike. This event may be cancelled due to inclement weather before or at the start of the hike. Check the weather report and plan accordingly. \nESSENTIAL GEAR: Hiking boots and poles. Clothing layers are recommended. Snacks and 2+ liters of water and electrolytes or salt tablets. SUMMARY:Replacement Hike: Mentryville – Pico Canyon Trail
DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION:\nSaturday\, February 21\, 2026\nSince our planned hike to Paradise Falls was cancelled due to trail closures\, we’re pivoting to a fantastic local alternative: \nMentryville: Pico Canyon Trail\nWe’ll start from Mentryville\, a historic Santa Clarita Valley site located at the base of Pico Canyon’s chaparral-covered slopes. Mentryville was an 1880s oil boom town built around its oil well\, Pico No. 4. Named for Charles Mentry\, several historic buildings still stand today\, including a grand thirteen-room mansion\, a one-room schoolhouse\, and a barn. Both Mentryville and Pico No. 4 are registered California State Historical Landmarks.\nThe hike begins on an asphalt road\, transitions to a fire road\, and eventually narrows to single-track trail. Pico Canyon Trail is one of our local gems — in just a short distance\, you’ll feel miles away from the hustle and bustle and immersed in wide-open backcountry with beautiful canyon views. \nDETAILS: \n\nMeet: Mentryville Parking lot where Pico Canyon Road ends at 8:15am\, departure at 8:30 am sharp (Feb 21).\nDistance: Approximately 6.8 miles.\nElevation gain: Approximately 1\,272 feet.\nTime: Approximately 3.5 hours hiking including one snack break (brisk pace).\nConditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition (this is not a beginner hike).\nDogs: Must be on leash.\nRestrooms – Yes at the park.\nAdventure Pass: Not required.\n\nIMPORTANT NOTES: We’ll hike at a brisk pace and ask everyone to stay with the group for a friendly and safe outing. SUMMARY:Waterfalls\, Wildwood & Well-Placed Bathrooms: The Paradise Falls Adventure
DESCRIPTION:Paradise Falls is Thousand Oaks’s version of Towsley Canyon—with similar canyon scenery\, a rewarding waterfall destination\, and the bonus of actual restroom facilities. Located in Wildwood Park\, we will explore the scenic route to the falls before climbing up to Wildwood Mesa for sweeping canyon views and a great look toward Mount Clef Ridge. Along the way\, we’ll cover between 5.3 and 6.5 miles\, gaining roughly 900–1\,000 feet of elevation depending on conditions and route choice. Expect some rugged\, uneven sections\, possible encounters with mountain bikers\, and more company near the falls—especially on weekends. Bridges typically span the creek outside of rainy season\, and while the water isn’t suitable for splashing around\, the well-placed facilities nearby make this a comfortable and scenic canyon adventure. \nThis is a moderate hike with some elevation. Please make sure to bring water and snacks\, sunblock\, and good shoes.

When we’re at Nordhoff Ridge\, those who want to can hike the extra .75 miles/388 feet gain to the peak (details below). Plan on 5-6 hours of quality time with switchbacks! \nStarting just north of downtown Ojai\, you’ll begin easy enough\, paralleling a creek and enjoying some shade. But don’t get too comfortable. The first hour or two will lull you into thinking “this isn’t that hard\,” then reality kicks in with a steady climb. Rockslides have left their mark in spots so\, be sure to wear actual hiking shoes\, not your cute flats! \nWhat makes it worth the sweat? Jaw-dropping views of the Topatopa Mountains and Ojai Valley that just keep getting better with elevation. You’ll pass through diverse terrain—chaparral\, wildflower meadows\, maybe even spot some wildlife. Water flows in cooler months\, and there’s a eucalyptus grove to break things up. \nDogs are welcome (can be off leash in areas)\, and the trail is open year-round. Just know this is a solid workout that’ll leave you wonderfully tired and Instagram-ready! \nDETAILS: \n\nHike leader volunteer(s): Tim R.\nMeet: Pratt Trailhead\, Ojai\, CA at 7:45 am\, departure at 8:00 am sharp (Feb 14).\nDistance: Approximately 9.7/11.4 miles.\nElevation gain: Approximately 3\,103/3.491 feet.\nTime: Approximately 5.0/6.0 hours hiking including a snack break.\nConditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition.\nDogs: Dogs are allowed.\nRestrooms: There are bathrooms at the trailhead.\nAdventure Pass: Not Required.\n\nIMPORTANT NOTES: We’ll hike at a brisk pace and ask everyone to stay with the group for a friendly and safe outing. There may be stream crossings\, exposures\, bugs or other warnings. As always\, people may slip and fall\, encounter poison oak\, ticks\, snakes\, etc. on this hike. This event may be cancelled due to inclement weather before or at the start of the hike. Check the weather report and plan accordingly. \nESSENTIAL GEAR: Hiking boots and poles. SUMMARY:Mt. McDill Loop (Lincoln Crest → McDill → Sierra Pelona Motorway)
DESCRIPTION:Hike Leader: Gary S. (Looking for Sweep volunteers) \nThis hike is part of my ongoing search for lesser-traveled local routes. It’s not flashy\, but it delivers: wide-open mountain scenery\, big views\, a solid conditioning workout\, and a good chance of wildlife and February wildflowers. And no people! When Paul and I pre-hiked it in late summer\, we didn’t see a single other person. \nThis is a moderate\, steady-paced conditioning hike\, not a race. We’ll move efficiently but comfortably\, take time to enjoy the views\, and keep the group together. A sweep will be present\, and so if you do lag behind a bit\, we’ll understand! If you’re a speedster\, and wish to hike at breakneck speed\, please do NOT sign up for this hike. We’ll take a more moderate pace that everyone is comfortable with. \nThe route starts at Lincoln Crest near the highest point (the crest) of Bouquet Canyon Road. We begin at ~3\,560 ft\, climbing a gated service road before transitioning to the original McDill single-track. After steady climbing through chaparral and mahogany\, we reach the Sierra Pellona Motorway (dirt road) and continue to Mt. McDill (5\,135 ft)\, where we’ll take a break\, hopefully find more deer\, enjoy the views\, and possibly sign the summit register. \nViews include Grass Mountain\, Mojave and Tehachapi peaks\, Leona Valley\, Lancaster\, Agua Dulce/Acton\, and glimpses of Mt. Pacifico\, Mt. Gleason\, and Baden-Powell. \nThe return includes a steep\, eroded\, and slippery downhill section on a non-maintained trail. Trekking poles and boots with good tread are strongly recommended. We’ll take this section slowly and carefully. \nThis is not a well-known trail\, but how often do you find a good local hike nearby that you haven’t hiked before? Check it out! \nStats: \n\nDistance: 6.5 miles\nElevation gain: ~1\,565 ft\nTime: 4 – 4.5 hours including snack time\nDifficulty: Solid **3.5 (**Intermediate: 5-10 miles\, 1000-2000 feet elevation gain with some challenging climbs and one tougher downhill section)\nExposure: Mostly exposed; expect wind and cooler temps\, wear layers\nAdventure Pass: Required\n\nWildlife note: On our pre-hike (on a very warm summer day)\, we saw multiple rattlesnakes\, horned lizards\, deer\, and other wildlife. Also plenty of interesting rocks and rock formations for fellow rockheads. \nMeet: 8:15 AM for a 8:30 AM sharp start\nTrailhead (Lincoln Crest area of Bouquet Canyon Road – near the highest point of Bouquet Cyn Road before it descends down towards Lake Elizabeth Road). Park along the road; leave nothing visible in your car. \n\nGPS: 34.58645\, -118.30547\nWhat3Words Map and Navigation (click this link)\n\nGetting There: \n\n~35 minutes north of Santa Clarita up Bouquet Canyon Rd\nFrom Antelope Valley: Lake Elizabeth Rd → south on Bouquet Canyon Road ~3.2 miles just past the Angeles Forest sign (at the peak)\n\nBring: Trekking poles\, lunch/snacks\, minimum 2L water (include electrolytes)\, layers\, hat\, sunscreen\, camera\, good hiking boots/shoes with good tread. This is a fully exposed hike\, so definitely watch the weather and wear layers if it’s cold and/or windy! \nFacilities: No bathrooms or nearby services \nDogs: Not recommended due to narrow trails\, the possibility of rattlesnakes and the steep\, eroded descent \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY – IMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY:\nWhen you sign up for this event\, you are releasing Community Hiking Club from any liability or responsibility with your participation in this group activity. SUMMARY:Vasquez Rocks Lollipop
DESCRIPTION:This 11.7-mile lollipop route including a section of the Pacific Crest Trail offers a compelling journey through one of Southern California’s most distinctive geological landscapes. The moderately challenging route takes an average of 6 hours to complete\, delivering hikers through lush desert canyons\, dramatic rock formations\, and seasonal creek crossings before culminating at the iconic Vasquez Rocks—those striking sandstone slabs tilted at impossible angles that you’ve undoubtedly seen in countless films and TV shows. \nThe trail’s highlight is its passage through Escondido Canyon\, where the PCT descends into a beautiful riparian corridor with possible water crossings during wet seasons Around the 2.7-mile mark\, you’ll encounter one of the hike’s most unusual features: a tall\, unlit tunnel that carries the trail beneath Highway 14. Just north of this tunnel\, hikers often find excellent spots for rest breaks\, and midway through the hike on the southern side\, there’s a small cave or overhang perfect for lunch. The route rewards you with panoramic views from ridgelines and the opportunity to spot wildlife ranging from crows to rattlesnakes\, with spring bringing spectacular wildflower displays\, particularly California poppies carpeting the south-facing slopes. \nThe Vasquez Rocks themselves were formed approximately 25 million years ago when the collision of the North American and Pacific tectonic plates uplifted sedimentary layers along the Elkhorn Fault. These coarse-grained sandstone formations accumulated from debris flows that eroded from the nearby San Gabriel and Sierra Pelona Mountains\, creating alluvial fan deposits that were later buried\, compressed\, and dramatically tilted by ongoing seismic activity. The park holds deep cultural significance as well—it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 due to its importance as a prehistoric site for the Shoshone and Tataviam people. Whether you’re a geology enthusiast\, history buff\, or simply seeking a scenic desert hike with that quintessential SoCal filming location at the finish\, this PCT section delivers a memorable outdoor experience accessible year-round. \nDETAILS: \n\nHike leader volunteer(s): Tim R.\nMeet: Vasquez Rocks rear parking area at 7:45 am\, departure at 8:00 am sharp (Jan 31).\nDistance: Approximately 11.7 miles.\nElevation gain: Approximately 2\,402 feet.\nTime: Approximately 6.0 hours hiking including a snack break.\nConditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition.\nDogs: Dogs are allowed.\nRestrooms: There are bathrooms at the trailhead.\nAdventure Pass: Not Required.\n\nIMPORTANT NOTES: We’ll hike at a brisk pace and ask everyone to stay with the group for a friendly and safe outing. SUMMARY:Sisar Canyon Road to White Ledge Campground
DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION:\nThis scenic out-and-back trail in the Los Padres National Forest offers a perfect blend of accessibility and wilderness character. The well-maintained fire road climbs steadily through Sisar Canyon\, gaining about 2\,300 feet over roughly 5 miles to reach White Ledge Camp. The wide path makes for easy navigation while still providing that satisfying sense of getting into the backcountry. Along the way\, you’ll pass through diverse vegetation zones—from chaparral-covered slopes to shaded oak groves—with occasional glimpses of the surrounding ridges. The steady grade makes this an excellent conditioning hike\, though it can feel exposed and hot in summer months. \nWhite Ledge Camp itself is a backcountry campsite\, tucked into a peaceful canyon setting with a few shaded campsites and a seasonal creek (which is likely dry this time of year). The camp makes a great turnaround point for day hikers or serves as a quiet overnight spot for those wanting to extend the adventure. While the fire road surface might not offer the rugged single-track experience some prefer\, the trade-off is a reliable\, well-graded trail that’s perfect for building endurance or introducing friends to backcountry hiking. It’s a solid choice when you want good elevation gain without technical challenges\, and the relatively quiet nature of this trail compared to more popular Ventura County hikes is definitely a bonus. Parking is limited so car pool and get there early if you can. \nDETAILS: \n\nHike leader volunteer(s): Tim R.\nMeet: 12540 Ojai Rd\, Ojai at 7:45 am\, departure at 8:00 am sharp (Jan 17).\nDistance: Approximately 10.6 miles.\nElevation gain: Approximately 2\,283 feet.\nTime: Approximately 5.0 hours hiking including a snack break.\nConditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition.\nDogs: Dogs are allowed.\nRestrooms: There are no bathrooms at the trailhead.\nAdventure Pass: Not Required.\n\nIMPORTANT NOTES: We’ll hike at a brisk pace and ask everyone to stay with the group for a friendly and safe outing. SUMMARY:SPECIAL HISTORICAL HIKE TO THE ST. FRANCIS DAM DISASTER NATIONAL MEMORIAL SITE
DESCRIPTION:Due to the inclement weather over the past few days\, the forest is currently closed. As a result\, we will need to postpone our hike.\nWe are tentatively planning to reschedule for January 10\, pending the Forest Service reopening the area and favorable weather conditions We’ll provide an update as we get closer and have more clarity. \nThank you for your understanding\, and stay safe. \nHistorical Hike above and through the ruins of the St. Francis Dam: \nThis hike will go up above the powerhouse\, where people will have a chance to stand on a metal bridge above the pennstocks\, and if water is propelling through the pennstocks\, they will feel a pretty good hearty shake coming from the pennstocks….sometimes they may even hear a rock bouncing through the pipes. \nThe hike will then begin\, up above the dam site\, giving hikers an aerial view. Once we cross the river\, we will be able to walk on the foundation of the dam and the area that was blown up after the dam failure. Then we will enjoy the tour of the actual dam site up close\, and see a natural BOG. Shoes should be the best gripping hiking boots that you have. Mileage is approx. 7.5 miles. Hiking sticks are highly recommended. You will be making your way up wooden stairs that were damaged by the flood. There is exposed metal and broken stairs left behind by nearly 200′ of water overhead. Hiking Poles will be extremely helpful. \nPlease listen to your leader who will point out areas that are not safe. She will point to eroded areas\, places on the bridge that we will cross that are not safe\, and potential hazards along the way. \n\nclothing to wear: old loose clothing\, hiking boots or shoes with gripping soles\, hat/hiking sticks are mandatory.\nPlease bring lunch. We will have a lunch break.\n\nDirections: Take the I-5 freeway north. Exit Newhall Ranch Road\, turn right. \nTurn right on Copperhill Road \nStay on Copperhill until you get to San Francisquito Road. Turn Left. Meet Dianne on the shoulder on the right side as soon as you turn on to San Francisquito Road. \nWhile driving once we leave the meeting spot\, Be careful on this road…it is a dangerous road where people speed and take chances\, and do dangerous passing of other cars.\nDon’t be a statistic \nFYI: Powerhouse 2 Address:\n32400 San Francisquito Road\nSanta Clarita\, CA 91390 \nIf you are late\, you might try to catch up with us here. \n1) Just beyond the powerhouse\, there will be a turnout with K-rails. This is the lower entrance to the dam site. This is where late comers MIGHT be able to catch up with us.Do NOT go past the stop sign. If you reach the stop sign\, you will have gone too far. \nDirections…..take McBean Parkway all the way north to Copper Hill Road. Turn right. Turn left at San Francisquito Road. Dianne will meet you at the right side of the road\, and we will carpool to the bottom of the dam site entrance. We will make one quick stop at the Power House 2 turnout. DO NOT PULL INTO THE PARKING LOT FOR POWER HOUSE \nAlternate directions: \nTake the I-5 freeway north. Exit Newhall Ranch Road/Copper Hill\, turn right. \nStay on Copperhill until you get to San Francisquito Road. Turn Left\nFind Dianne on the right side of the road in the pull out area. There should be other cars there. Be prompt.\nOnce we leave the meeting spot\, please be careful on this road…it is a dangerous road where people speed and take chances/ pass when it’s not safe\, and speed. Many deaths occur on this road.\nDon’t be a statistic\, be safe \nCELL SERVICE: There is NONE. Once you return to Copper Hill Road\, you will most likely have your service restored. \nNOTE:.Mulholland built 19 dams in the Los Angeles area\, and this is the only one that failed. GEOLOGY is why it failed. Geology was not even a science in 1920s….and when it was talked about\, people scoffed at the idea…..a rock is a rock……and yet the remaining 18 dams that Mulholland built in L.A. still stand.\nDon’t be a statistic\, be safe \nCELL SERVICE: There is NONE. Once you return to Copper Hill Road\, you will most likely have your service restored. \nPowerhouse 2 Address Just for your info. We will park near the powerhouse\, NOT INSIDE THEIR GATE:\n32400 San Francisquito Road\nSanta Clarita\, CA 91390 \nDianne Hellrigel\nQUESTIONS: zuliebear@aol.com

SUMMARY:Serrano to Sycamore Canyon Loop Trail
DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION: We start at the Big Sycamore Canyon Campground near sea level\, heading north on the pleasant Sycamore Canyon Trail for 1.5 miles before turning east into the densely wooded Serrano Canyon. The trail follows a seasonal stream with abundant crossings (if there is water which seems unlikely this late in August) and wildlife sightings as we wind through the narrow canyon surrounded by lush vegetation. After gaining elevation through the creek bed\, we emerge into stunning open grasslands set against the dramatic backdrop of Boney Mountain\, climbing approximately 800 feet over the first 4 miles. The trail traverses these rolling meadows\, passing an old aluminum shack where many hikers pause to enjoy the sweeping vistas. From here\, we connect to the Old Boney Trail for a scenic descent back toward Big Sycamore Canyon\, completing the loop on a wide fire road that offers different perspectives of the surrounding wilderness. The final stretch returns us through the campground to our starting point\, having experienced both intimate canyon beauty and expansive mountain views on this fun 9.2-mile adventure. \nDETAILS: \n\nHike leader volunteer(s): Tim R.\nMeet: Sycamore Canyon Trailhead\, Point Mugu State Park\, Malibu\, CA (Sep 13).\nDistance: Approximately 9.2 miles.\nElevation gain: Approximately 1\,177 feet.\nTime: Approximately 4.5 hours hiking including a snack break.\nConditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition.\nDogs: No dogs are allowed.\nRestrooms: There are bathrooms at the trailhead.\nAdventure Pass: Not Required.\n\nIMPORTANT NOTES: We’ll hike at a brisk pace and ask everyone to stay with the group for a friendly and safe outing. August 14-17\, 2025 \nJoin us for a fun and educational beach campout! \nMorro Bay State Park is located 13 miles west of San Luis Obispo\, on the Central Coast about 3.5 hours from Santa Clarita. The park features a lagoon and natural bay habitats\, and a natural history museum. Our CHC geologist\, Mary Bates will be along to teach about the geological features of the area. On the lagoon’s northeastern and eastern edges\, there are saltwater and brackish marshes that support thriving bird populations. Two of the Nine Sisters chain of volcanic peaks leading from San Luis Obispo to Morro Bay\, Black Hill & Cerro Cabrillo\, are within park boundaries. Black Hill has a trail winding through dense stands of Monterey Pine trees and offers a panoramic view of the greater Morro Bay area at its summit. Cerro Cabrillo has even more trails to explore all along its base. It is near Montana de Oro\, which also has some beautiful trails. \nThe Community Hiking Club of SCV has reserved a limited number of pre-paid campsites which are available for sharing with other CHC campers. The cost of the reserved campsites will be divided equally among the number of campers per site. Each camper will be advised of their portion prior to the trip and is responsible for paying the party who reserved the campsite upon arrival. \nEach campsite has a fire ring and picnic table with water spigots nearby. There are flush toilets and TOKEN-operated shower facilities in place. An RV sanitation station and water-fill station are also available. Firewood is for sale from the campground host and proceeds go to help the Central Coast State Parks Association. \nOnly 2 vehicles maximum per campsite\, so carpooling from SCV is highly recommended. No extra vehicles in campsites beyond the 2 vehicle limit. Trailers and motorcycles count as vehicles. Additional vehicles may be parked just outside the state park. Arrangements can be made with another camper to help bring you and your camping equipment into the campground with their vehicle should you arrive after the parking spots at the campsite have been filled. \n8 Persons maximum per campsite. \nDogs must be monitored and leashed within the campgrounds. \nTo Reserve a Spot: RSVP AND secure your spot with a $20 deposit. First come\, first served. \nRefund Policy:\nIf you cancel\, your deposit is forfeited.\nIf CHC cancels a camping trip that requires a reservation fee at the time the site is reserved\, each camper that paid the $20 deposit to hold their spot on the trip will be refunded all of their $20 minus the shared cost of any cancellation fee\, if one is charged. \nAddress:\nMorro Bay Campground\nState Park Road\nMorro Bay\, CA 93442 \nDirections:\nMorro Bay State Park & Campground are located: \n\n13 miles west of San Luis Obispo on Highway 1\n32 miles south of the Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument Visitor Center on Highway 1\n124 miles south of Monterey through Big Sur on Highway 1 (When road conditions permit)\nThe charming community of Morro Bay is located 1.5 miles to the north of the campground and offers gas stations\, grocery stores\, dining and more.\nThe coastal town of Cayucos is located 7.5 miles to the north of the campground and offers more dining choices.\nThe small town of Los Osos is located 5 miles to the south of the campground and offers even more gas stations\, grocery stores\, and dining options.\n\n\n\nGoogle Maps link:\nhttps://maps.app.goo.gl/Unrn7SVp9oPRmyWn6 \nMore information will go out the week of the trip.\nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY – IMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY:\nWhen you sign up for this event\, you are releasing Community Hiking Club from any liability or responsibility with your participation in this group activity. SUMMARY:Mentryville: Pico Canyon Trail
DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION: It’s great to be planning hikes again after some time away to let a nagging foot injury heal. I’m starting with an old favorite that won’t be too hard for someone who hasn’t hiked in the better part of three months. It’s exciting to be hiking again! \nWe’ll start from Mentryville (a historic SCV site) located at the base of Pico Canyon’s chaparral-dominated slopes\, Mentryville was an 1880’s oil boom town built around its oil well\, Pico No. 4. Named for Charles Mentry\, historic buildings still stand including a grand thirteen-room mansion\, a one-room schoolhouse\, and a barn. Mentryville and Pico No. 4 are registered as California State Historical Landmarks. \nThe beginning of the hike is on an asphalt road which yields to a fire road and untimely a single-track trail. Pico Canyon Trail is another one of the local gems where in a just a short hike you’re miles from the hustle and bustle of modern life and into the wide-open spaces of the back country enjoying nature with great views. We’ll be getting started early to avoid the midday heat! \nDETAILS: \n\nMeet: Mentryville Parking lot where Pico Canyon Road ends at 7:00am\, departure at 7:15 am sharp (June 14).\nDistance: Approximately 6.8 miles.\nElevation gain: Approximately 1\,272 feet.\nTime: Approximately 3.5 hours hiking including one snack break (brisk pace).\nConditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition (this is not a beginner hike).\nDogs: Must be on leash.\nRestrooms – Yes at the park.\nAdventure Pass: Not required.\n\nIMPORTANT NOTES: We’ll hike at a brisk pace and ask everyone to stay with the group for a friendly and safe outing. SUMMARY:Devil's Gateway
DESCRIPTION:DETAILS:\n· Hike leader volunteer(s): Dave.\n· Meet: Pothole Trailhead in Angeles National Forest.\n· Distance: ~ 12\,5 Miles total (out and back style)\n· Elevation gain: ~ 1\, 745\n· Time: Approximately 6-7 hours hiking including a couple of 15 minute breaks.\n· Conditioning: You’ll need to be in generally good physical condition.\n· Dogs: Are but not recommended\n· Hiking Poles – recommended\n· Restrooms – Trailhead.\n· Adventure Pass –Yes. \n\nMeet at trailhead at 07:45 AM leave at 08:00 AM\n\nDescription: A sign marks the trailhead. Plenty of room to park with restroom. The first 2 miles is a road walk where you can enjoy views of the lake and surrounding mountains. After we pass a ranch the road stops and the trail begins. Trail is only 18 inches wide and marked with ribbons at water crossings. Take your time crossing Aqua Blanca creek. Sometimes we will be next to the creek and other times we will be 100 ft or more above. Important to remember the trail is only 18 inches wide. We’ll stop for lunch at Devil’s Gateway then return the way we came. \nHike Leader Notes: This is a beautiful hike but the trail is brushy and narrow\, therefore ticks could be a concern. Poison Oak is an issue I suggest you were pants. Bring plenty of water. On my pre-hike I brought 2 liters of water and 1 liter of electrolyte\, ran out on the road back. Suggest you leave spare shoes and dry socks in your car. A recovery drink would be a good idea. Saw a few deer and bear tracks on the hike. Sometimes the trail is hard to find. Please remember I have hiked this part of the trail many times. \nIMPORTANT NOTES: This is not a speed hike. We’ll need to be careful crossing the many streams and staying on the trail. X-APPLE-STRUCTURED-LOCATION;VALUE=URI;X-ADDRESS=DESCRIPTION:DETAILS:\n· Hike leader volunteer(s): Dave.\n· Meet: Pothole Trailhead in Angeles National Forest.\n· Distance: ~ 125 Miles total (out and back style)\n· Elevation gain: ~ 1 745\n· Time: Approximately 6-7 hours hiking including a couple of 15 minute breaks.\n· Conditioning: You’ll need to be in generally good physical condition.\n· Dogs: Are but not recommended\n· Hiking Poles – recommended\n· Restrooms – Trailhead.\n· Adventure Pass –Yes. \nHike Leader Notes: This is a beautiful hike but the trail is brushy and narrow therefore ticks could be a concern. Poison Oak is an issue I suggest you were pants. Bring plenty of water. On my pre-hike I brought 2 liters of water and 1 liter of electrolyte ran out on the road back. Do your best to stay with the group for a friendly and safe outing. Any guest that you wish to invite should join the Community Hiking Club (CHC) to participate.
