SUMMARY:Happy Camp - Suitable for beginners
DESCRIPTION:Beginner\, 5 miles\, 500′ gain. Bug spray recommended.\nThis hike is entirely fire-road and is almost completely flat. Some of this trail is sandy\, so walking it at times can be more difficult. There are a lot of different interesting plants on this hike. \nFrom the trail head\, we walk along the fire road next to the golf course for 1.3 miles until making a left at a junction. \nPlease be advised that from that point on\, there is a no dogs allowed sign. At some point as we continue\, the ground will become very sandy. \nThe landscape will change from dry to green\, eventually coming to a spot where sometimes you can hear the water running along the left down in a canyon. We’ll stop there to share some Snacks and/or beverages to share and have a social event for 30-60 minutes\, before turning around to head back the way we came. Please bring snacks and/or beverages to share. \nInteresting Notes:\nYou will see several plants of note\, and if you are interested\, you can look them up before the hike. I’ll mention several\, and then fully describe a couple more: \nRussian Thistle\, Black Walnut\, Caterpillar Phacelia\, White Sage\, Yucca\, Bladder Pod. \nJimson Weed\nThe plant got its name from Jamestown\, because in 1676\, Jamestown\, VA soldiers ate this plant in their salad and became psychotic for 11 days. \nThe leaves and seeds are used to make medicine. Despite serious safety concerns\, jimson weed is used to treat asthma\, cough\, flu (influenza)\, swine flu\, and nerve diseases. Some people use it as a recreational drug to cause hallucinations and a heightened sense of well-being (euphoria). All parts of Datura plants contain dangerous levels of the tropane alkaloids atropine\, hyoscyamine\, and scopolamine\, which are classified as deliriants\, or anticholinergics. \nThe risk of fatal overdose is high among uninformed users\, and many hospitalizations occur amongst recreational users who ingest the plant for its psychoactive effects. As much as a 5:1 variation can be found between plants. It contains chemicals such as atropine\, hyoscyamine\, and scopolamine. \nIngesting only a few small seeds can result in serious poisoning and may be life-threatening. Ingesting even small amounts of the plant or seeds can result in confusion\, frightening hallucinations\, the inability to urinate or sweat\, overheating\, and a rapid heart rate. \nDepending on the amount ingested\, these troubling symptoms can last hours to many days\, and in some cases can lead to death. Touching he plant can cause dermatitis. \nCastor Bean\nOne of the most poisonous plants in the world. \nThe seeds contain ricin\, one of the most poisonous naturally occurring substances known. Perhaps just one milligram of ricin can kill an adult. Walter White made a poison cigarette by putting in ricin\, in the series Breaking Bad. \nThe symptoms of human poisoning begin within a few hours of ingestion. If death has not occurred in 3-5 days\, the victim usually recovers. The seed causes skin irritation at the contact point. It is said that just one seed can kill a child. \nIn 1978\, ricin was used to assassinate Georgi Markov in 1978\, a Bulgarian journalist who spoke out against the Bulgarian government. He was stabbed with the point of an umbrella while waiting at a bus stop near Waterloo Station in London. They found a perforated metallic pellet embedded in his leg that had presumably contained the ricin toxin. \nCastor beans are pressed to extract castor oil which is used for medicinal purposes. Ricin does not partition into the oil because it is water-soluble\, therefore\, castor oil does not contain ricin\, provided that no cross-contamination occurred during its production. \nUsed in bone marrow transplants\, cancer therapies\, AIDS treatment\, and can selectively destroy neurons by injecting ricin into nerves. \nDirections:\nHappy Camp\n15100 Happy Camp Canyon Rd.\nMoorpark\, CA 93021\n34.311460\,-118.866110 \nFrom the 118 and from the 101:\nHead to towards the intersection of I-118 and CA-23.\nExit 19A Princeton Ave.\, turn right (north) if coming from the east\, left coming from CA-23.\nPrinceton Ave. north for 0.2 miles.\nLeft on Campus Park Dr. for 0.4 miles and continue on Happy Camp Canyon Rd. for 0.7 miles.\nFollow signs to Rustic Canyon golf course.\nPark on the right in gravel lot\, just before golf course paved lot. Do not park in the paved golf course lot\, it has a gate that closes at sunset. \nThe Hike\nDistance: 5 miles\, 3 1/2 hours\nElevation Gain: 500′\nDifficulty: Fit Beginner\nPace: 2.0 mph\nDogs: No. A sign half-way says no dogs. I’m not the dog enforcer\, so bring a dog at your own risk.\nRestrooms/Drinking Fountains: Yes\, inside the golf course clubhouse at the start\, but likely closed after dark.\nParking: Free in the gravel lot next to the paved golf course lot.\nTrail: Fire Road and some with powdered sand. \nWhat to Bring:\n1-2 liters of water.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK. They will get very dusty on this trail.\nFlashlight or headlamp. \nFAQ\nHiking Plus Page Links\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

SUMMARY:Ray Miller Trail in La Jolla Canyon ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:We will start this hike at 8:30 and go to the fire road.\nThe trail is an awesome blend of ocean and mountain views in Malibu’s La Jolla Canyon. We will start from the trailhead which follows the canyon eastward\, away from the ocean. Then\, it quickly brings you back toward the ocean at a gradual incline. There’s a great lookout spot where it gives you a breathtaking view of the Pacific Coast Highway against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean\, with sweeping views toward Mugu Rock on the west and Sycamore Cove on the east. After another peak\, you’ll start a slight decline that brings you to the fire road where we will turn around. Along the way\, we’ll be treated to magnificent sweeping views of La Jolla and Big Sycamore Canyons\, and of course\, the largest ocean in the world. On a clear day\, the Channel Islands are easily within sight\, although the marine layer has been pretty prominent this summer.\nThis is a 5-6 mile out and back hike with an elevation gain/loss of about 1000’. It will be hot so bring lots of water and a hat. \nDirections: \nFrom Los Angeles\, take the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) north\, 22 miles from Malibu Canyon Rd. Across the street from Thornhill Broome Beach is the entrance to La Jolla Canyon. It is very clearly marked. Turn right. \nFrom Ventura\, take PCH eastward\, and turn left 4 miles after Las Posas Road into La Jolla Canyon. \nHeads up: There is a parking fee in the lot (you can try leaving your pass in the window although they are generally not used in the summer). There is free parking on PCH just a short walk to the trailhead. \nPlease review the guidelines (guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPlan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. If you are able to proceed\, it is expected that you will maintain line of sight with other members of the group at all times and help to promote the group’s safety and fitness goals. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you are taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. \nIf you choose to sign up for this or any Weekday Trailblazers Meetup event\, you are releasing the Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience.\nAll participants must be 18 or older\, or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. No “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.

DESCRIPTION:NOTE UNUSUAL STARTING LOCATION! \nWe will start our hike at the neighborhood trailhead at Pinehill and Potrero in Newbury Park. See written instructions; parking is not permitted on Potrero\, so you’ll have to find spots on Pinehill or Greenwood Street. \nOur lopsided lollipop hike will pass by our usual RSV parking spot\, descend to the bridge\, and climb up and out of the canyon along the Upper Sycamore Creek trail. We’ll turn left at Danielson Fire Road\, cross the meadow back to the Satwiwa Interpretive Center\, and return to the cars on a slightly different route. \nNOTE: Please review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. Here are some highlights: \n\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours:\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nPlan on completing the entire hike at ~2.5 miles per hour\, or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nPlease bring water. Parts of this hike are exposed.\nNo dogs allowed.\n\nDirections to the Trailhead \n\nExit 101 at Lynn Road and drive 4.4 miles southwest. Turn left onto Reino Road\, go 0.2 miles\, then right onto Potrero (yes\, it’s confusing; another part of Lynn Road turns into Potrero; this is different!).\nYou’ll see a drainage canal on your right; continue 0.5 miles to Pinehill and find a place to park.\n\nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. SUMMARY:Lindero Canyon Road to Simi Peak - Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:http://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/e/3/a/0/event_167038272.jpeg \nThis challenging hike has some rocky parts\, but no scrambling. \nThis hike will take us on a scenic trip from the suburbs of Oak Park to the top of Simi Peak\, which overlooks both the Simi and Conejo Valleys and offers splendid views of the Santa Monica range and offshore islands to the south and west. \nOur route begins at the north end of Oak Park. We begin our ascent\, through a series of switchbacks\, a fire road\, and then a double track. Once we reach China Flats\, our remaining route is reasonably flat\, except for the last quarter mile\, as we ascend about 300 feet to reach Simi Peak and its worthwhile views. The terrain is a mix of single and double-file trail and open fire road. \nThe total distance will be approximately 6+ miles with 1400+ feet elevation gain. \nThe hike is mainly open hillside and chaparral. The weather can range from calm to windy and from warm to hot. Dress accordingly. We will stop at Simi Peak to grab a snack and enjoy the great views there\, and return to the traihead via China Flat and then the fire road back to our starting point. \nParking: \nParking is free at the Lindero Canyon Trailhead. Please do not leave anything of value in your car\, at this or any other trailhead. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 Freeway – Exit the 101 freeway at Lindero Canyon Road and turn north toward the Simi Hills. Drive about 4 miles on Lindero Canyon Road to Wembly Ave. and make a U-turn. After the U-turn\, the China Flats Trailhead will be on the right. Park along the right side of the road and we will meet in front of the marked China Flats Trailhead. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Corriganville the Back Way Double Loop Lollipop
DESCRIPTION:4 miles\, 700′ gain\, easy-intermediate\nEasy option: 2.5 miles\, 500′ gain \nParking on the south side of the CA-118 at the Rocky Peak exit. We’ll walk west along the Santa Susana Pass Rd. for about 500 feet\, and directly across from Lilac Ln\, we’ll enter a trail. We’ll move along a relatively flat section for 1/2 mile\, turn right\, and make a gradual climb until just before the wildlife tunnel. \nWe turn left and take a set of switchbacks down into Corriganville. We’ll now be in front of a picnic pavilion. \nEasy Option: Wait at the pavilion for about 35 minutes. \nThe rest of the group can leave their stuff at the pavilion\, and will hike a 1.5 mile loop\, returning to this same place. We’ll turn right and loop through the park. We’ll pass an outdoor amphitheater\, then make a mild climb to the top of a hill. \nNext\, we’ll turn right at the top\, zig-zag down\, and then make a left to the wide center trail that leads up through the park to its only parking lot. We won’t cross to the lot yet. \nWe’ll follow the trail as it bends to the right until it eventually bends back left and heads into the parking area. We’ll then walk along the side of the lot and head back to the picnic pavilion\, where we’ll have a social event. \nAfter the event\, we’ll circle around the front of the pavilion and walk along railroad tracks for 200 yards towards the park lot. Behind a couple small shacks\, we’ll turn left and cross the tracks\, then head onto a trail and take this all the way back to Santa Susana Pass Rd. and then our cars. \nIt is posted that the park closes at sunset\, so for this hike\, we’ll start heading back before dark. \nInteresting Notes\nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nCalifornia Sagebrush\nAromatic when crushed. AKA\, common sage\, coastal sage. Sunflower family. Cowboys used to ride through it and brush up against the pine-shaped leaves\, coming home with the smell on their clothes and giving rise to the nickname “Cowboy Cologne.” Not a true sage. Can be used as a cooking spice and can be made into a tea. Tear off some needles by running your hand up the stalk and smell the aroma. \nPurple Sage\nGrey-green leaves. Aromatic when crushed. Purple flowers. Aka\, Tobacco Sage\, with mild hallucinogenic properties when smoked. Can be used as a spice or made into a tea. Tea has medicinal affects: Antiviral\, gargle for sore throats\, reduce hay fever symptoms and other drying actions. In the last summer\, fall\, and winter months\, the flowers will have turned brown and the leaves we take on a greyer color. \nDirections\nRocky Peak Exit\, South Side of CA-118\nSimi Valley\, CA 93065\n34.267447\, -118.634809 \nFrom the 118\nExit 32 Rocky Peak Rd.\nPark on south side of the freeway along Santa Susanna Pass Rd. \nFrom the 101 @ CA-23\nNorth CA-23 for 8.4 miles.\nEast I-118 for 14 miles.\nExit 32 Rocky Peak Rd. \nPark on south of the freeway along Santa Susanna Pass Rd. \nThe Hike (route link)\nDistance: 4 mi.\, easy option 2.5 mi.\nElevation Gain: 700′\, easy option 500′.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate\, easy option – Fit Beginner\nPace: 2.0 mph\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: Yes\, at the picnic pavilion.\nDrinking Fountains: Yes\nParking: Free\, south side of CA-118\nTrail: Single Track\, Double Track\, and fire road.\nPurpose: Social \nWhat to Bring:\n1-2 liters of water.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp. SUMMARY:8 mile ~ Encinal Canyon to Top of the World ~ Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:Encinal Canyon is named for encina\, the Spanish word for the holm oak\, a lovely Mediterranean tree with holly characteristics. Holm oaks are one of the main trees used to establish truffle orchards\, but we’ll be nosing around the canyon strictly for its beauty. \nThe trail from Encinal is a smooth\, firm\, and well-traveled single track\, swooping and winding with a constant\, gentle slope. We’ll have fabulous views of the coast for much of the way. Close to the top\, we’ll take on the slightly steeper Etz Meloy Motorway\, then the last tenth of a mile is up a seldom-used trail to the isolated peak\, where we’ll both lose and catch our breath with a 360-degree view. \nFrom our perch above it all we’ll see Sandstone Peak to the west\, Simi Valley to the north\, Ladyface and Mt Baldy to the east and the Channel Islands to the south and west. \nThis is a 8 mile out and back hike\, with about 1200′ of elevation gain. \nNOTE: Please review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. Here are some highlights and a link to the guidelines:\nhttps://www.meetup.com/The-Weekday-Trailblazers/about/\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours:\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nPlan on completing the entire hike at an intermediate pace or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo dogs allowed. \nDirections: \nThe parking area is off the north side of Encinal Canyon Road\, almost directly across the street from the Camp 13 fire station & Rattle Snake Road. Park in the large dirt lot\, which is free. \nFrom the 101 Freeway\, turn south on Kanan Rd. Continue 6.2 miles\, then turn right onto Mulholland Hwy. After 0.9 miles\, veer left onto Encinal Canyon Rd. Drive 2.4 miles to the parking area\, on the right. \nFrom the Pacific Coast Highway – From the PCH\, turn up Encinal Canyon Road. Drive 5 miles\, then turn right onto Encinal Cyn Rd. Continue 1.1 miles to the parking area\, on the left. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Wilderness Access Day - Limestone Canyon - **Must sign up on LetsGoOutside.org
DESCRIPTION:I’m excited for another Wilderness Open Access Day at Limestone Canyon. We will be doing the out and back trail to the Sinks. The hike will be about 8 miles with roughly 630 ft. of elevation gain. \n**You must sign up here:\nhttps://letsgooutside.org/activities/2025/08/02/wilderness-access-day-limestone-canyon-63/ \nAt the time of posting\, there are 255 spots left of 400. \nFrom the site: \nAll participants are required to have\, a printed copy or on their phone\, the confirmation email to show through the window of their vehicle to drive through the entry gate. \nYou will need the confirmation email for you and your guests to enter the trail system. \nStart your weekend off by exploring numerous opportunities found throughout magnificent Limestone Canyon. Designated trails will be open for self-guided trail use in OC Parks’ Irvine Ranch Open Space. Trail routes vary in distance and level of difficulty with choices ranging from easy one-hour walks to strenuous 15-mile cardio treks. Whether traveling by feet or wheels\, Wilderness Access Day in Limestone Canyon is a treasure waiting to be discovered by hikers and mountain bikers alike.\nParticipants will want to plan their day successfully by using Trail Tips to prepare. \nPlease note that you are asked to adhere to the following measures during the activity in order to participate: \n\nArrive with all necessary equipment to keep you safe on the trail\, including water\, proper attire and footwear\, first aid\, medications\, etc.\nRestrooms will be available\, but facilities will not be sanitized for each individual.\nVisiting the highly popular “The Sinks” is a 9-mile round trip hike over moderate terrain and can take the majority of the designated event time.\nOC Park Rangers require all trails to be cleared for closure by 2:00pm.\nNo new trail users will be permitted onto the trails at least one hour prior to closing.\nDogs are prohibited on the Irvine Ranch Open Space. By nature\, dogs are predators; their presence and their lingering scent disturb the indigenous wildlife and disrupt vital routines long after a dog has left the area.\nMinors\, ages 18 and under\, should be accompanied by a parent or guardian.\nAdult mountain bikers and equestrians are requested to wear helmets. Minors are required to wear helmets per state law.\nMotorized recreation vehicles of any class or type are not permitted for use in the Irvine Ranch Open Space.\nInclement weather or fire danger will cause the program to be cancelled.

SUMMARY:Las Llajas - Suitable for beginners
DESCRIPTION:5 miles\, 500′ gain\, Beginner \nThis hike is a great trail for beginners because all the elevation gain is distributed. It is a walk down a rolling fire road through a really cool canyon\, and you will find no difficult or extended elevation climbs. \nThis is one of my favorite trails for people new to hiking. It is an “out-and-back” hike\, where we return the way we came\, so there is virtually no chance of getting lost. You may be amazed that such a place exists right here in Simi Valley. \nFrom the trail head\, we’ll walk down an asphalt path for several hundred steps and turn right onto a gravel fire road. After that\, there will be no more turns. We may take a detour up a trail off to the right to see the first bee sanctuary\, then return back to the fire road. \nWe’ll continue on the fire-road for about 1 mile. We’ll stop there (in the shade if summer) to allow others to catch up. \nThen we’ll take a 200′ detour to the left to see another bee sanctuary\, which continues in a half circle back to the fire road. Even though I haven’t seen any actual bees there in a while\, it’s still interesting to see. \nWe’ll continue for another 1.5 miles and have a social event\, right on the trail. We’ll share snacks and beverages. We may adjust the exact location if there are winds. \nFor the return\, we go back the way we came. \nThere is a lot of wild life along this trail because it is the only area with water for quite a distance. \nThis is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. Still\, for those that aren’t interested in the beverage and/or snack share and want more of a workout\, just continue on for another mile\, then turn around and come back. That’s about how long we’ll be before packing up and heading back the way we came. \nInteresting Notes:\nTree Tobacco (Nicotiana glauca)\nElongated yellow flowers. The Cahuilla Indians used the leaves interchangeably with other tobacco species in hunting rituals and as a poultice to treat swellings\, bruises\, cuts\, wounds\, boils\, sores\, inflamed throat\, and swollen glands. \nIt does not contain nicotine. It contains anabasine\, a similar compound\, which is highly toxic to humans and animals. It is more toxic than nicotine. Ingestion of the leaves can be fatal. It is being investigated for use as a biofuel. All parts of this plant are toxic. \nUsed as an insecticide. Do not smoke it. \nThe Hike\nDistance: 5 miles\nGain: 500′\nDistribution: Well distributed.\nDifficulty: Beginner\nShape: Out and Back.\nPace: 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road.\nTrail Variations: Rolling stroll.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along street. \nWhat to bring:\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed. \nHosting \nRoute and Navigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed. \nHike type: Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \nStops:\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share at the half way point. This hike does not have any junctions or turns once past the initial path down to the fire road. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nSince this hike is out-and-back on a wide fire road with no turns after the first 500′\, one cannot get lost. Therefore\, for this hike\, it will be acceptable to split from the group moving faster\, slower\, or otherwise at your own pace. \nGroup separation:\nSometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \nDirections\nLas Llajas Canyon Trail\n5715 Evening Sky Dr\nSimi Valley\, CA 93063 \nFrom the west\n23-N to 118-E\, Exit 29 Yosemite.\nFrom the east: 118-W\, Exit 29 Yosemite.\nHead north on Yosemite for 1.25 miles. Turn right (east) on Evening Sky Drive and proceed for 0.5 miles.\nSee the trail head on the left. Park along the street. \nFAQ\nHiking Plus Page Links\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

SUMMARY:Malibu Creek SP - Reagan Ranch to MASH and Forest Trail
DESCRIPTION:This hike includes 2 trails we have not done on previous treks to the MASH site. We will enter MCSP on the Yearling Trail but that is where this hike diverts from the ordinary. We will jump onto the Deer Leg trail to Cage trail which descends to Crags Road. From Crags Road we cross Malibu Creek (bridge) to the Forest Trail. The Forest Trail parallels the south side of Century Lake through a beautiful shaded riparian habitat\, past MCSP’s last remaining Coast Redwood (7 others burned in Woolsey Fire)\, to Century Dam. We then head back to Crags Road and the trail to MASH. But\, before leaving MASH we will explore the Lost Cabin trail which climbs to a view of Kaslow Natural Preserve\, behind Goat Buttes. \nWe will complete our western tour of MCSP by returning to the Yearling Trail via the Cage Trail. This hike clocks in at 6 1/2 miles\, 750′ gain. \nWhen I scouted this route on Saturday\, all of the trails were reasonably cleared of brush but I would not recommend shorts due to some narrow areas of “single track” trail. Also\, there are some rocky spots (trekking poles might be helpful if you normally use them). \nPlease review the guidelines (link to the guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPLEASE bring plenty of water.\nYour safety is your own personal responsibility\, but the hike leader reserves the right to ask you to leave if you come unprepared.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Ride the Two Winds (Dos Vientos) - Gentler Friendly Hike
DESCRIPTION:Note 8:30 am start time!\nThis hike will start at 8:30 and we will probably go slower than David’s Malibu Canyon hike. It’s usually a bit cooler in the Dos Vientos area. We will loop around the periphery of Dos Vientos Open Space\, passing Twin Ponds\, overlooking Potrero Road and the Oxnard Plain with the Channel Islands in the background. \nThis hike is about 5.0 miles with 800 feet of elevation gain. \nPace: This is a gentler friendly hike. We will go at a slightly slower pace and we will finish in about 2-2 1/2 hours. Faster hikers are welcome to join us so long as they are willing to hike at the slower pace of the group or wait at the forks on the trail. There are many confusing side trails in Dos Vientos so please plan to stay in contact with the group\, not too fast and not too slow\, plenty of forks to wait for the rest of the group. \nPlease note this trail is very exposed (no shade) and there is no water along the way. \nDIRECTIONS: From the 101 Freeway in Newbury Park\, exit at Borchard Road. Drive 3.4 miles and turn into the Dos Vientos Community Park on the right\, just after Via Ricardo (and before Via Las Brisas). Meet near the tennis courts to the left. \nIf you are coming from the NW\, exit Wendy and turn left on Wendy and then a right on Borchard to Dos Vientos Community Park. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY:\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours:\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nUnregistered or waitlisted will be turned away\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nPlan on completing the entire hike or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo dogs\nAll participants must be 18 or older\, or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. SUMMARY:Santa Rosa Trail Loop through Box Canyon - Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Haven’t done this hike in a long time. Hoping the marshy area has dried up since we have had no rain in a while. \nPlease read these restrictions before signing up. \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list\nUnregistered or waitlisted will be turned away\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nNo dogs allowed on the hike\n\nTime to check out the Santa Rosa Trail to view some cool properties including the train collector yard accessible through Wildwood Park in Thousand Oaks. Wildwood is one of the most versatile local parks there is\, with 27 miles of trails skittering through rocky cliffs\, cacti-filled desert environs\, volcanic rock\, riparian forest\, and a cool\, watery canyon. Wildwood’s archetypal western look served as the set for The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train back in the day\, as well as the movie Spartacus. This hike takes us up the Santa Rosa Trail to Mount Clef Ridge\, providing sweeping views of the park\, the Santa Rosa Valley. \nhttp://photos3.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/9/1/5/2/600_318817202.jpeg \nDescending into the valley\, we’ll pass the famed train yard\, as well as other quirky estates. \nhttp://photos2.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/d/d/e/c/600_99896812.jpeg \nWe will take the Box Canyon Trail and the Mesa Trail back and if there’s time hit Lizard rock before heading back to the parking lot. Our route will be approximately 6 1/2 miles and 1000 +’ of elevation gain. Much of the hike is exposed- dress appropriately\, and make sure you have water or beverage of choice. Bring your cellphone\, a headlamp or flash light\, any medications you may need\, and a rainjacket if the weather looks iffy. \nhttp://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/c/a/0/600_451023232.jpeg \nhttp://photos4.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/d/4/1/600_451023393.jpeg \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road and continue 2.6 miles to Avenida De Los Arboles\, then turn left. Continue for about a mile to the end and turn into the Wildwood parking lot on the left. \nFrom the 118\, travel west to the 23\, exit at Avenida De Los Arboles and turn right. Drive further than you remember having to drive to this trailhead (10 or 15 minutes). Turn left into the parking lot when the road ends. \nWatch for cross traffic coming from the right when you turn into the parking lot- they don’t have to stop. Parking is ample and free. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Rocky Peak Modified - Intermediate or Fit Beginner
DESCRIPTION:4 miles\, 950′ gain\, Intermediate\n2 miles\, 550′\, Fit Beginner \nThis will be our 1000th meetup event since the group started. We have such a great bunch of people that attend these hikes! \nThis is a modified version of the famous Rocky Peak hike. It gives those that want something easier\, a chance to climb one of the most well known trails in Simi Valley. \nIt contains beautiful sandstone formations throughout the hike and there are fantastic views of the valleys. There is really no way to get lost because there are no junctions. If one chooses\, they can turn around and return to the beginning at any point during this climb. \nThe beginning contains continuous and somewhat steep incline of about 1000 steps. It’s a fire road\, so it’s not steeper than a truck can climb. Still\, beginners will find this short climb to be exhausting. There is nothing wrong with taking short breaks and doing it slowly\, as there will be plenty of time. \nAfter 1 mile\, we’ll arrive at the Hummingbird trail and bench. This is where we’ll have a social event. Those that have had enough\, should wait for 30-45 min. unltil the others that went further\, return\, and can explore the various rock formations there: at least two caves along the edge of the trail within a few hundred feet. \nAdditional Segment\nThose that want something extra will continue for 1 more mile\, and just after the final and steep ascent to the top\, there will be a junction off to the right. They’ll turn around and return to the bench. Those proceeding with this segment can do all or part of it. \nAt the bench\, we’ll share snacks and beverages\, enjoy the views\, and engage in social interaction for about a hour before returning the way we came. \nIt can get windy and cool in the evening\, so I would recommend bringing something light to put on. \nInteresting Notes:\nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nCalifornia Sagebrush\nAromatic when crushed. \nDirections: \nRocky Peak Trail\nSimi Valley\, CA 93065\n34.268396\, -118.636139 \nFrom the 118\nExit Rocky Peak Rd.\nTrailhead on the north side. \nPark either at the trailhead (limited parking)\, or south of the freeway along Santa Susanna Pass Rd. \nFrom the 101 @ CA-23\nNorth CA-23 for 8.4 miles.\nEast I-118 for 14 miles.\nExit 32 Rocky Peak Rd.\nTrailhead on the north side (left). \nPark either at the trailhead (limited parking)\, or south (right) of the freeway along Santa Susanna Pass Rd. \nThe Hike\nDistance: 4 miles\, easier option 2 miles.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nElevation Gain: 950′\, easier option 550′.\nDifficulty: Intermediate / Fit Beginner\nPace: 2.0 mph\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No\nParking: Free at the trailhead (limited parking\, not recommended as you can get a ticket after sunset for parking there) or across the freeway 500′.\nTrail: Fire road.\nPurpose: Social \nWhat to Bring:\n1-2 liters of water.\nSnack and Beverage Share\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp. \nFAQ\nHiking Plus Page Links\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability
