SUMMARY:Mt. McDill Loop (Lincoln Crest → McDill → Sierra Pelona Motorway)
DESCRIPTION:Hike Leader: Gary S. (Looking for Sweep volunteers) \nThis hike is part of my ongoing search for lesser-traveled local routes. It’s not flashy\, but it delivers: wide-open mountain scenery\, big views\, a solid conditioning workout\, and a good chance of wildlife and February wildflowers. And no people! When Paul and I pre-hiked it in late summer\, we didn’t see a single other person. \nThis is a moderate\, steady-paced conditioning hike\, not a race. We’ll move efficiently but comfortably\, take time to enjoy the views\, and keep the group together. A sweep will be present\, and so if you do lag behind a bit\, we’ll understand! If you’re a speedster\, and wish to hike at breakneck speed\, please do NOT sign up for this hike. We’ll take a more moderate pace that everyone is comfortable with. \nThe route starts at Lincoln Crest near the highest point (the crest) of Bouquet Canyon Road. We begin at ~3\,560 ft\, climbing a gated service road before transitioning to the original McDill single-track. After steady climbing through chaparral and mahogany\, we reach the Sierra Pellona Motorway (dirt road) and continue to Mt. McDill (5\,135 ft)\, where we’ll take a break\, hopefully find more deer\, enjoy the views\, and possibly sign the summit register. \nViews include Grass Mountain\, Mojave and Tehachapi peaks\, Leona Valley\, Lancaster\, Agua Dulce/Acton\, and glimpses of Mt. Pacifico\, Mt. Gleason\, and Baden-Powell. \nThe return includes a steep\, eroded\, and slippery downhill section on a non-maintained trail. Trekking poles and boots with good tread are strongly recommended. We’ll take this section slowly and carefully. \nThis is not a well-known trail\, but how often do you find a good local hike nearby that you haven’t hiked before? Check it out! \nStats: \n\nDistance: 6.5 miles\nElevation gain: ~1\,565 ft\nTime: 4 – 4.5 hours including snack time\nDifficulty: Solid **3.5 (**Intermediate: 5-10 miles\, 1000-2000 feet elevation gain with some challenging climbs and one tougher downhill section)\nExposure: Mostly exposed; expect wind and cooler temps\, wear layers\nAdventure Pass: Required\n\nWildlife note: On our pre-hike (on a very warm summer day)\, we saw multiple rattlesnakes\, horned lizards\, deer\, and other wildlife. Also plenty of interesting rocks and rock formations for fellow rockheads. \nMeet: 8:15 AM for a 8:30 AM sharp start\nTrailhead (Lincoln Crest area of Bouquet Canyon Road – near the highest point of Bouquet Cyn Road before it descends down towards Lake Elizabeth Road). Park along the road; leave nothing visible in your car. \n\nGPS: 34.58645\, -118.30547\nWhat3Words Map and Navigation (click this link)\n\nGetting There: \n\n~35 minutes north of Santa Clarita up Bouquet Canyon Rd\nFrom Antelope Valley: Lake Elizabeth Rd → south on Bouquet Canyon Road ~3.2 miles just past the Angeles Forest sign (at the peak)\n\nBring: Trekking poles\, lunch/snacks\, minimum 2L water (include electrolytes)\, layers\, hat\, sunscreen\, camera\, good hiking boots/shoes with good tread. This is a fully exposed hike\, so definitely watch the weather and wear layers if it’s cold and/or windy! \nFacilities: No bathrooms or nearby services \nDogs: Not recommended due to narrow trails\, the possibility of rattlesnakes and the steep\, eroded descent \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY – IMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY:\nWhen you sign up for this event\, you are releasing Community Hiking Club from any liability or responsibility with your participation in this group activity. SUMMARY:Danielson Monument - potluck hike
DESCRIPTION:6.5 miles\, 1300′ gain\, intermediate\nThis hike is longer and harder than our regular hikes.\nWe start at 3:00PM to make the most of the sunlight time. \nBeautiful spring is here!\nLet’s enjoy hiking to the Danielson Monument in the Boney Mountain Wilderness\, potluck\, and “Peace\, Love and Joy”! \nPlease bring food and drinks to share.\nWe’ll have our typical snack-share social event at the top for 60-90 minutes before heading back the way we came. Please bring some food and drink to share. If your item requires plates or utensils (ex: rice\, macaroni salad\, etc.)\, please bring them. You may wish to bring your own cup\, plate\, and utensils in case there aren’t any. \nYou will see several plants of note: \nTree Tobacco\nThe Cahuilla Indians used the leaves interchangeably with other tobacco species in hunting rituals and as a poultice to treat swellings\, bruises\, cuts\, wounds\, boils\, sores\, inflamed throat\, and swollen glands. It does not contain nicotine. \nIt contains anabasine\, a similar compound\, which is highly toxic to humans and animals. It is more toxic than nicotine. Ingestion of the leaves can be fatal. It is being investigated for use as a biofuel. All parts of this plant are toxic. Used as an insecticide. Do not smoke. \nElderberry\nThe blue or purple berries are gathered and made into elderberry wine\, jam\, syrup\, and pies. The entire flower cluster can be dipped in batter and fried while petals can be eaten raw or made into a fragrant and tasty tea. Spit out the seeds. Elderflower water is also used in perfumes and sweets. \nMost agree that they do need to be cooked if you are going to eat more than just a few out of hand. That’s because they have a small amount of cyanide producing glycosides\, which are released upon digestion. Fully ripe black berries are not toxic and you can eat as many as you like. Boiling or baking takes care of any “toxic” issue as does drying raw berries. \nHike Distance: 6.5 miles\nGain: 1300′\nDifficulty: Intermediate\nShape: Out and back.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Double track\, single track.\nDuration: 5 hours\, 3 for just the hike part.\nDogs: Not allowed in the state park.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along the street. \nMeet at: Wendy Trail Head\n4128 Potrero Rd\nThousand Oaks\, CA 91361\nWhere S. Wendy Dr. ends at Potrero Rd. \nWhat to bring:\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots. Not required\, but recommended.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share \nFAQ\nHiking Plus Page Links\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

SUMMARY:China Flat & Simi Peak ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:This hike begins from the top of King James Court\, a cul-de-sac off Lindero Canyon Road. Begin up the trail at the top of the road\, passing through a gate by a sign that reads “China Flat Trail Head.” It will pass through the branch of Suicide Trail and another branch of China Flat Trail. Stay to the left as Simi Peak Trail heads west\, gradually ascending through more oak savanna on China Flat. As you ascend\, look over your shoulder and you should be able to spot the San Gabriel Mountains to the east of the Simi Hills. On clear winter days\, the snowy top of Mount Baldy will be hard to miss. The summit of Simi Peak has views in every direction. The Santa Monica Mountains stand tall on the far side of the valley\, stretching to the east and west about as far as can be seen.\nThis hike is about 5 1/2 miles out and back with approximately 1200’ of elevation gain/loss. \nDirection: Take the 101 Freeway to exit 39 in Westlake Village and head north on Lindero Canyon Road. Drive 3.7 miles and turn left up King James Court (which is 0.9 miles past Kanan Road). Go a tenth of a mile up to the trailhead at the end of the road and park. \nPLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY\nPlease review our guidelines to participate in our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPlan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace\, or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Coyote Park - Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Distance: 3.5 miles\, Gain: 700′\, Intermediate.\nThis was previously designated easy-intermediate\, but some thought it should be labeled as intermediate because of the extended inclines. \nA strong and motivated beginner can do this hike. We’ll wait there for everybody to catch up.\n• Next\, we’ll follow the path alongside the road for about 500′ (flat walk) and turn left. This will be a flat section that leads for almost a mile back to the park. \nDirections \nFrom CA-23\nNorth\, exit Olsen Rd.\nOlsen Rd. east\, becoming Madera\, for 1.8 miles.\nRight on N. SUMMARY:Mr. Toad's Wild(wood) Ride - A Gentler Hike
DESCRIPTION:If you’ve ever read “Wind in the Willows” you’ll know just how much fooling around in beautiful creeks and rivers plays a part in the story of Mr. Toad and his friends. \nThis hike will follow the various forks of the Arroyo Conejo and Indian Creeks around Wildwood Park. On Sunday\, the creeks were flowing well\, with lots of water falling over Paradise Falls. We’ll scootch through a tiny cave\, and see a nice variety of wildflowers. We’ll also see the Lynnmere Loop trail we did last Thursday\, but from across the arroyo. \nWe will start at the parking lot at Canna Street and Timberwood Avenue (see map)\, and immediately walk through a tunnel to get into Wildwood Park. We’ll do a big lollipop loop along the creekside trails\, and wind back at the cars about 5 miles / 600 ft. later. \nNOTE: Please review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. Here are some highlights and a link to the guidelines:\nhttps://www.meetup.com/The-Weekday-Trailblazers/about/\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nThere are no “Plus One’s” on this hike.\nAll participants must be 18 or older\, or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.\nPlan on completing the entire hike at an gentler (~2.5 mph) pace or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo dogs allowed.\n\nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Corriganville the Back Way Double Loop Lollipop
DESCRIPTION:4 miles\, 700′ gain\, easy-intermediate\nEasy option: 2.5 miles\, 500′ gain \nParking on the south side of the CA-118 at the Rocky Peak exit. We’ll walk west along the Santa Susana Pass Rd. for about 500 feet\, and directly across from Lilac Ln\, we’ll enter a trail. We’ll move along a relatively flat section for 1/2 mile\, turn right\, and make a gradual climb until just before the wildlife tunnel. \nWe turn left and take a set of switchbacks down into Corriganville. We’ll now be in front of a picnic pavilion. \nEasy Option: Wait at the pavilion for about 35 minutes. \nThe rest of the group will hike a 1.5 mile loop\, returning to this same place. We’ll turn right and loop through the park. We’ll pass an outdoor amphitheater\, then make a mild climb to the top of a hill. \nNext\, we’ll turn right at the top\, zig-zag down\, and then make a left to the wide center trail that leads up through the park to its only parking lot. We won’t cross to the lot yet. \nWe’ll follow the trail as it bends to the right until it eventually bends back left and heads into the parking area. We’ll then walk along the side of the lot and head back to the picnic pavilion\, where we’ll have a social event. \nAfter the event\, we’ll circle around the front of the pavilion and walk along railroad tracks for 200 yards towards the park lot. Behind a couple small shacks\, we’ll turn left and cross the tracks\, then head onto a trail and take this all the way back to Santa Susana Pass Rd. and then our cars. \nIt is posted that the park closes at sunset\, so for this hike\, we’ll start heading back before dark. \nInteresting Notes\nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nCalifornia Sagebrush\nAromatic when crushed. AKA\, common sage\, coastal sage. Sunflower family. Cowboys used to ride through it and brush up against the pine-shaped leaves\, coming home with the smell on their clothes and giving rise to the nickname “Cowboy Cologne.” Not a true sage. Can be used as a cooking spice and can be made into a tea. Tear off some needles by running your hand up the stalk and smell the aroma. \nPurple Sage\nGrey-green leaves. Aromatic when crushed. Purple flowers. Aka\, Tobacco Sage\, with mild hallucinogenic properties when smoked. Can be used as a spice or made into a tea. Tea has medicinal affects: Antiviral\, gargle for sore throats\, reduce hay fever symptoms and other drying actions. In the last summer\, fall\, and winter months\, the flowers will have turned brown and the leaves we take on a greyer color. \nDirections\nRocky Peak Exit\, South Side of CA-118\nSimi Valley\, CA 93065\n34.267447\, -118.634809 \nFrom the 118\nExit 32 Rocky Peak Rd.\nPark on south side of the freeway along Santa Susanna Pass Rd. \nFrom the 101 @ CA-23\nNorth CA-23 for 8.4 miles.\nEast I-118 for 14 miles.\nExit 32 Rocky Peak Rd. \nPark on south of the freeway along Santa Susanna Pass Rd. \nThe Hike\nDistance: 4 mi.\, easy option 2.5 mi.\nElevation Gain: 700′\, easy option 500′.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate\, easy option – Fit Beginner\nPace: 2.0 mph\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: Yes\, at the picnic pavilion.\nDrinking Fountains: Yes\nParking: Free\, south side of CA-118\nTrail: Single Track\, Double Track\, and fire road.\nPurpose: Social \nWhat to Bring:\n1-2 liters of water.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp. SUMMARY:Pratt Trail To Nordhoff Ridge or Peak
DESCRIPTION:Ready to earn those mountain views? The Pratt Trail is Ojai’s classic “no pain\, no gain” adventure—a 9.7-mile out-and-back beast that’ll have you climbing 3\,103 feet through Los Padres National Forest. When we’re at Nordhoff Ridge\, those who want to can hike the extra .75 miles/388 feet gain to the peak (details below). Plan on 5-6 hours of quality time with switchbacks! \nStarting just north of downtown Ojai\, you’ll begin easy enough\, paralleling a creek and enjoying some shade. But don’t get too comfortable. The first hour or two will lull you into thinking “this isn’t that hard\,” then reality kicks in with a steady climb. Rockslides have left their mark in spots so\, be sure to wear actual hiking shoes\, not your cute flats! \nWhat makes it worth the sweat? SUMMARY:Hike at Caspers Wilderness Park - Bell Canyon + Oso Trail
DESCRIPTION:The hike I am planning is around 6.3 miles with about 700 ft. of elevation gain. It starts at the very end of the paved road\, the long gray strip that can be seen on the map. \nWe will begin at the Bell Canyon Trail head. We will continue onto that and then take it to the Cougar Pass trail. We will go up that and make a left on Oso Trail. Once that ends\, we will come back down Bell Canyon Trail until we hit Star Ridge Trail. We will take this to West Ridge Trail and go left. This will take us to a single track trail\, Dick Loskorn Trail. This hits Nature Loops Trail and this will take us back to the beginning. \nThis is a beautiful hike with expansive views. It is a nice and remote hike\, so you are really out there in the wilderness. \nIf you have any questions regarding the park or the trails we will be on\, please let me know! \nHere is a link to the park map: http://ocparks.com/civicax/filebank/blobdload.aspx?BlobID=8164 \nThe address is: 33401 Ortega Hwy. San Juan Capistrano\, CA 92675 \nDogs are not allowed at this park. \nParking is $5\, unless you have an OC Parks Annual Permit. If you hike a lot\, it’s totally worth it: http://ocparks.com/about/fees/pass You can buy the pass at the park.

SUMMARY:Hail To The Trail: Presidents' Day Hike at the Old Reagan Ranch
DESCRIPTION:An HWD Classic! \nThis hike is sponsored by Amazon – https://amzn.to/2GnCP0a \nDuring the 1950s\, when Ronald Reagan hosted TV’s “Death Valley Days\,” he wanted a more rural retreat than his home in Pacific Palisades. So he bought a 305-acre ranch in the hills of Malibu as a place to raise thoroughbred horses and dubbed it “Yearling Row.” \nReagan Ranch (1957-1967)\, now part of Malibu Creek State Park\, is a delight for hikers\, who can enjoy the ranch’s rolling meadow land and grand old oaks. Trails loop through the Reagan Ranch and connect with the main part of the state park. We’ll use a combination of trails–Yearling\, Deer Leg\, Lookout\, Crags Road and Cage Canyon–to explore Reagan Country and the heart of the park\, including Century Lake. \nHike will be about 5.5 miles with 1\,000 feet total ascent and is rated MEDIUM. See the HWD Hike Ratings Guide – \nDIRECTIONS \nThe Old Reagan Ranch parking lot is on the Southeast corner of Cornell Rd and Mullholland Hwy \nIMPORTANT \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. \nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly. \nThe Organizers and members in this group are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. The function of the member or organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who shows up for a trip/meetup (and their guest or guests) is responsible for his or her own safety. SUMMARY:Biking - Temescal to Fishermans Village 20 or 30 miles.
DESCRIPTION:This is a 20 or 30 mile (your choice) beach ride. We’ll start at Temescal Canyon and take the Marvin Braude bike trail south to Fishermans Village\, with a small side trip to potentially see some very large boats. At this point\, anyone wanting to do only 20 miles can relax with some coffee\, ice cream or a snack. The 30 mile group will continue another 5 miles down the bike path and then start back. We’ll likely stop somewhere for a snack and a drink before retuning to our start point. \nThe route is all paved with a total gain of about 167 feet over 20 miles. So\, it’s about as flat as a trail can be. \nThe only caveat to this one is that there always seems to be headwinds coming out of the Northwest during the last few miles. \nBring Along: \n\nMake sure you bring along a spare inner tube and have tires inflated for road riding.\n\nMEETUP LOCATION (<- Click) Well be at the small pavilion where Temescal Canyon intersects the bike path. \nPARKING FEE: There is paid parking at Temescal and PCH and you can also park on Temescal Canyon for free and ride down to the starting point. \nRESTROOMS: YES \nDURATION: 4 HOURS \nDISTANCE: 20 or 30 miles – you choose. \nROUTE: (<-click to see it)\nRide with GPS route \nELEVATION GAIN: 167′ \nPACE: 11-13 mph \nTERRAIN: 20/30 miles of bike path and paved roads. \nMY CELL# IS: 818-307-6460 \nPLEASE make sure your bike is in working order before attending. \nDISCLAIMER & SAFETY NOTICE – Group Bike Ride\nBy participating in this ride—or any event organized by the “E Biking LA County and Beyond Meetup Group” —YOU (all riders\, event attendees) voluntarily assume all risks associated with outdoor activity\, including but not limited to injury\, illness\, equipment failure\, road hazards\, weather and possible vehicle/bike — bike/bike — accidents and/or death.\nYou agree to release the leaders\, the organizer\, from any and all liability\, claims\, or demands arising from participation.\nThe leaders for the “E Biking LA County and Beyond Meetup Group” are not a certified outdoor\, fitness or biking guide\, and you are solely responsible for your personal safety and preparedness.

Time to return for a night enjoying some food and friends indoors for a change. \nIf you’ve never been here\, it’s a great experience. Crazy decor\, huge menu\, lots of fun drinks\, great service\, and a guaranteed good time! \nSo if the rain stops our hike\, it doesn’t mean we can’t all hang and enjoy some off-trail shenanigans. \nMenu and more info at www.thejunkyardcafe.com

SUMMARY:Potrero – All paved – Easy Intermediate\, post-rain hike
DESCRIPTION:5.75 miles\, 700′ gain. Easy Intermediate.\nDo not park on Potrero else risk getting a ticket. You need a permit to park on this street. Side streets such as Pinehill or Greenwood are good to park. \nThis hike is a great trail when it might be muddy because almost the entire hike is on an asphalt path through a huge state park (> 20 sq miles). It’s also a good option when it’s very hot out\, because this is one of the cooler areas where we hike\, half shaded\, and most of the incline is on the return. \nSince the elevation gain is low and the route is paved\, we’ll be likely hiking a little faster than typical. It’s a little more than 8 miles to go all the way to the ocean. \nAt the 2.9 mile mark\, we’ll find a picnic table 350′ off to the right side\, where we’ll stop and have a social event for about an hour before heading back the way we came. There are no turns on this hike\, so as long as you stay on the asphalt path\, you really can’t get lost. \nDirections\n4161 Potrero Rd.\nThousand Oaks\, CA 91320\n34.156636\, -118.962989 \nNote that when turning left at the dead end to continue on Potrero Rd.\, the sign at the intersection will say S. Reino. It is that name if you go right. But we go to the left\, so it is a continuation of Potrero Rd. \nFrom the west: 101-S\, Exit 48B Wendy Dr.\, turn right.\nFrom the east: 101-N\, Exit 47C Wendy Dr.\, turn left.\nSouth on Wendy Dr. until it deadends at Potrero Rd.\nRight on Potrero Rd. for 0.5 miles.\nLeft to stay on Potrero Rd. (it is Reino if you turn right) for 0.5 miles.\nTurn right on Pinehill Ave. and park.\nWalk 800 feet back to the intersection of Potrero Rd. and Big Sycamore Canyon Rd. \nDo not park on Potrero Rd. \nThe Hike\nDistance: 5.9 miles.\nGain: 700′\, mostly on the return.\nDistribution: The return section has an extended incline.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Out and Back.\nPace: 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Asphalt path.\nTrail Variations: Rolling stroll with an extended incline.\nDuration: 3.5 hours.\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: Yes\, along the way at the start.\nDrinking Fountains: Yes\, along the way at the start.\nParking: Free along Pinehill Ave. No parking on Potrero\, it is for residents with a permit only. \nWhat to bring: 1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp. \nHosting\nRoute: The host knows the route. A pic of the route has been posted as part of this description. \nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed. \nHike type: Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \nThis hike is out-and-back on an asphalt path\, While it will be acceptable to split from the group moving faster\, slower\, or otherwise at your own pace\, keep in mind if you get ahead\, you must know where we are stopping. \nFAQ\nHiking Plus Page Links\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

SUMMARY:Serra Cross Park at Grant Park ~ Gentler Intermediate

SUMMARY:Waterfalls\, Wildwood & Well-Placed Bathrooms: The Paradise Falls Adventure
DESCRIPTION:Paradise Falls is Thousand Oaks’s version of Towsley Canyon—with similar canyon scenery\, a rewarding waterfall destination\, and the bonus of actual restroom facilities. Located in Wildwood Park\, we will explore the scenic route to the falls before climbing up to Wildwood Mesa for sweeping canyon views and a great look toward Mount Clef Ridge. Along the way\, we’ll cover between 5.3 and 6.5 miles\, gaining roughly 900–1\,000 feet of elevation depending on conditions and route choice. Expect some rugged\, uneven sections\, possible encounters with mountain bikers\, and more company near the falls—especially on weekends. Bridges typically span the creek outside of rainy season\, and while the water isn’t suitable for splashing around\, the well-placed facilities nearby make this a comfortable and scenic canyon adventure. \nThis is a moderate hike with some elevation. Please make sure to bring water and snacks\, sunblock\, and good shoes.
