SUMMARY:Malibu Creek State Park (MCSP) from Tapia ~ 8:00 start!
DESCRIPTION:We will start this hike into MCSP from Tapia Park. The Tapia Park entrance is just before the Piuma intersection. Note: a day use fee (machine at entrance) is required if you don’t have a State Park Pass. After you enter Tapia\, follow the signs to Salvation Army Camp & Conference Center. It’s about 0.4 mile to the Salvation Army Camp entrance. Park on the right side of the road (lined pull-in parking stalls). \nOur hike starts on the Tapia Spur trail\, which winds through a lovely chaparral “forest” and drops down onto the road by the park’s group campground. We’ll follow the campground road to the main trailhead (Crags/High Road). Crags Road runs along and above Malibu Creek. The water level has dropped enough to allow a dry crossing of the creek to Mott’s Road\, which leads to the Chaparrel trail. The Chaparrel trail climbs up and over the ridge behind the MCSP Visitor’s Center. From there we’ll cross the “big” bridge to Crags Road which will take us to the shaded east end of Century Lake. Next we will use the Cage trail to access the Overlook trail loop with panoramic views of MCSP’s “central valley”. We’ll return to the Tapia Spur trail along the shaded northern side of Malibu Creek. \nThis out-and-back hike clocks in at around 6.5 miles\, with an elevation gain/loss of about 950‘. I have timed this hike at 3 hours to allow a leisurely pace in anticipation of warmer weather. \nDirections: From the 101 Freeway take Las Virgenes Rd.\, south for 4.8 miles to the Tapia Park entrance (south of main MCSP entrance). \nPlease review the guidelines (link to the guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPLEASE bring plenty of water.\nYour safety is your own personal responsibility\, but the hike leader reserves the right to ask you to leave if you come unprepared.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. If you are able to proceed\, it is expected that you will maintain line of sight with other members of the group at all times and help to promote the group’s safety and fitness goals. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you are taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. \nIf you choose to sign up for this or any Weekday Trailblazers Meetup event\, you are releasing the Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience.

SUMMARY:Oakbrook Vista - Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:3.2 miles\, 900′ gain\, Intermediate. \nThe first part is a steady incline\, followed by a rolling trail to our destination. Fit beginners can complete this hike\, but it will certainly get their blood pumping. There are no super steep sections. \nThis hike takes us to a secret spot below a large rock formation. Naturally into the side of the rock is a half-globe carved out of it\, giving us a quasi-cave area to sit and have our social event. \nThis is not a conditioning hike\, it’s a social hike. We’ll be stopping at various points to let people catch up and to make sure they make any turns. We’ll stop at the turn around point for a social event lasting 30 – 60 minutes\, where we will share snacks and beverages. \nThe Route \nHike\nDistance: 3.2 miles\nGain: 900′\nDistribution: Most of the incline is in the first half.\nDifficulty\nShape: Out and Back.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Double track\, single track.\nTrail Variations:\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: Yes\, about a block from the start.\nDrinking Fountains: Maybe by the restrooms.\nParking: Park in the street. \nWhat to bring\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots. Not required\, but recommended.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share \nHosting\nRoute: The host knows the route. A pic of the route has been posted. \nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed. \nHike type: Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \nStops: The host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a Snack and Beverage Share at the half way point. We will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda or some sticks in the shape of an arrow. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nEach hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind\, and for making sure the host is notified if they are going to split from the group. \nGroup separation: Sometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \nInteresting Notes\nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nManzanita\nRounded leaves. Redish trunk and stems. Hard wood. Lots of curves. People used to spray this tree with lacquer and mount on their walls like a “tree of life” for decoration. \nSticky Monkeyflower\nOf the Snapdragon family. The flowers are supposed to resemble a laughing monkey’s face. Leaves are very sticky on the underside. \nDirections\nOakbrook Vista Trailhead\n3222 Lang Ranch Pkwy.\nThousand Oaks\, CA 91362\nCoordinates of trailhead: 34.212466\, -118.820325 \nFrom CA-23\nExit 15 Avenida de Los Arboles.\nEast on Avenida de Los Arboles until it ends\, 1.6 miles.\nRight (south) on N. Westlake Blvd 0.2 miles.\nLeft (east) on Lang Ranch Pkwy. 0.2 miles.\nPark on street\, trailhead on the right (south) side. \nFAQ\nHiking Plus Page Links\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

SUMMARY:🤞🏻Newton Canyon to Buzzards Roost🌊🌊- 8 Mile Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:This hike will start at 8:00. We will meet in the parking lot on Kanan at Newton Canyon\, we’ll jump on the Backbone Trail for a cruise over and up to the peak of the Zuma Ridge Trail at Buzzard’s Roost. On the ridge\, we’ll have a great view of Zuma Beach and the Pacific. On our way there\, we’ll cross a free-flowing creek (not sure the water is still there)\, pass under a recovering oak canopy (to remind us of the cycles of life). We will hit the fire road. Some of us (anyone who wants to) can stop at the fire road and then head back (about 5 miles). The more intermediate hikers can go on up to Buzzards Roosts for a total of 8 miles. \nThis is an out and back hike at a total of 8 miles\, with 1600′ total elevation gain\, leading to the turnaround point with the ocean view at Buzzards Roost. Plan to stay with the group unless and until you decide to turn around early\, just let someone know what you are doing. There are trees in the canyon but the fire road will be hot\, bring lots of water. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101\, go south (toward beaches) on Kanan Road about 8 miles to just before the third tunnel (T1). The parking lot is on the right. \nFrom Pacific Coast Highway\, go north on Kanan Dume Road about 4 miles and make a left turn into the parking lot immediately after going through the first tunnel. \nPlease review the guidelines to participate in our morning hikes. Here are some highlights and a link to the guidelines:\nhttps://www.meetup.com/The-Weekday-Trailblazers/about/\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours:\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nNo dogs\nPlan on completing the entire hike at a brisk pace or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. The Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. SUMMARY:Sycamore Canyon Hike from the Ocean - a Gentler Hike
DESCRIPTION:HIKE DETAILS:\nThis will be a little easier hike for Tuesday\, with less elevation gain\, less miles\, and slower. Should you change hikes\, don’t forget to cancel the one you are not going on this Tuesday. \nThis hike will go from the beach up to the picnic table on the fire road\, approximately 5.5 miles. Most of the hike is exposed but hopefully we may have a marine layer and it will be cloudy. No dogs. \nWe will meet in the Day Use parking lot at Sycamore Canyon Campground. We will start off along the main Sycamore Canyon road and turn up to the fire road where we will climb up to the picnic table. We will then follow the fire road back down to the parking lot\, so out and back. \nDirections: \nWe will be meeting at the Sycamore Canyon Campground and day use parking area on Pacific Coast hwy. This trailhead and parking area is about a mile south from the La Jolla Canyon Parking area where we go to hike the Ray Miller Trail and just across from the campground. \nParking is available in the campground for $12 (or free with a State Parking Permit). There may not be free parking on PCH. \nThere are also restrooms at the day parking lot. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. \nAll participants must be 18 or older\, or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

SUMMARY:WILL CREEK ROAD South of Big Sur (100% dirt roads)
DESCRIPTION:ROUTE This will be our planned route. \nThe California Central Coast region is world renowned as one of the most scenic parts of the entire west coast. Imagine an even better view than the coast highway has to offer. A road where there is no tour buses in front of you & no sports car riding your rear end on the tight curves. Well\, we’ll be riding some of these back roads as we visit Cambria and the Willow Creek area.\nThis is the second of a two day event. This one will be in the Willow Creek area 36 miles north of Cambria. We’ll be on a steep but well groomed dirt road for this ride.\nThe scenery along this ride will be worth our struggles along the way. Just make sure you have experience with long steep grades. I’ve added a photo above\, showing the steepness and condition of the dirt road that we will be riding on. I’ll be taking alot of brakes on the way up to make it tolerable and to enjoy the views this ride offers. \nMake sure you have green slime or FlatOut in your inner tubes to avoid flats. \nMEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: In a parking lot on Pch at the intersection of PCH and Will Creek Roads at 10:00am. \nPARKING: Park on PCH across from Will Creek Road \nRESTROOMS: 7/10 of a mile north of our meetup location at the Willow Creek Beach Day Use . Make sure you use restrooms there before showing up to our meetup location. \nDISTANCE: 19 miles \nELEVATION GAIN: 4000′ \nDURATION: 4+ hours \nBIKE TRAIL DESCRIPTION: Well groomed dirt roads \nTHE PACE: 6 MPH on up. \nLEVEL: Intermediate \nDEBRIEFING: After the ride we’ll have a late lunch in Cambria. \nMY CELL # IS 805-358-5972

SUMMARY:Long Canyon - Lower Loop - Easy Intermediate with Fit Beginner option
DESCRIPTION:3 miles\, 800′ gain\, Easy Intermediate.\nEasy option\, 1.4 miles\, 450′ gain\, Fit Beginner \nThe address given is not the address of the hike. It is nearby and may cause you to drive past the trailhead if navigating by GPS. \nRoute\nFrom the trailhead parking lot\, up for 0.7 mile on Long Canyon Trail to a bench. For those doing the easy option\, wait here about 40 minutes. They can spend that time going out and back in the area\, if they like. \nFor the regular route\, we continue with a 2 mile loop\, 400′ of gain:\nWe turn right\, go up 300 feet\, then down Sunrise Trail 4/5 of a mile.\nLeft at the junction for 300 feet.\nLeft at the split for 200 feet up a relatively steep incline.\nLeft on Autumn Ridge\, which is a fire road.\nContinue on this extended incline for about almost a mile\, arriving at the five-points intersection.\nTake an “easy” left\, not a hard left\, for about 500′ back to the bench where those that did the easy route will be waiting. \nWe’ll have a snack share social event for 30-60 minutes before turning right and heading back down to the trail head parking lot. \nInteresting Notes \nTurkey Mullein\nSmashed leaves can be thrown into the water to stupify fish\, causing them to float to the surface\, a practice illegal in most states. The seeds are not toxic to birds and are enjoyed especially by doves and wild turkeys. \nAncient Greeks rolled and dried the leaves\, then used them as wicks for oil lamps. It stalks were used as torches burned at funerals. Many tribes employed the use of mullein leaf tea for coughs\, colds\, and rheumatism. They considered it to be analgesic\, anti-inflammatory\, antispasmodic\, and expectorant. The astringent and demulcent properties of the leaf tea were found useful in cases of diarrhea. \nWild Oats\nThe mature seed of the plant is used as a cereal grain. All oats have edible seeds\, although they are small and hard to harvest in most species. Oats are hard to tell apart from weedy relatives\, so the term “sowing wild oats” came to be used to describe unprofitable activities and destructive sexual liaisons of an unmarried young male that could result in children being born out of wedlock. \nHike \nDistance: 3 miles\, easy option 1.4 miles.\nGain: 800\, easy option 450.\nDistribution: Most of the incline is in the first 15 minutes of the hike\, followed by an extended incline at the halfway point.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Lollipop\, counter-clockwise.\nPace: 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road\, single and double track. Areas of sand\, gravel\, and rock\, some of it rugged.\nTrail Variations: The beginning is a tough climb.\nThere is an extended incline of about 2000 steps half way through the hike.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free in the paved parking area in front of the trail head. \nWhat to bring:\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp for hikes that end after sunset.\nSunscreen and/or hat if needed. \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route.\nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed.\nHike type: Social. \nThose that wish to return immediately instead of hanging around during the snack and beverage share\, can head directly back down to the parking lot. \nStops:\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share at the 3/4 point. \nWe will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda or some sticks. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nDirections\nWhere Long Canyon Rd. and S. Wood Ranch Pkwy. intersect in Simi Valley. There is a free paved parking lot at the trailhead on the southwest corner. \nFrom CA-23 and I-101\nNorth CA-23\, exit Olsen Rd.\nRight (east) on Olsen Rd.\, which becomes Madera Rd.\, for 2 miles.\nRight (south) on N. SUMMARY:Wildwood Central Park
DESCRIPTION:Wildwood Park is one of our most versatile local parks\, with 27 miles of trails traversing rocky volcanic cliffs\, cacti-filled desert environs\, riparian forest\, and a cool\, watery canyon. Wildwood’s western look served as backdrop for TV classics such as The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train. \nWe will meet at Wildwood’s main parking lot. This looping hike will start at the Moonridge Trail\, cross onto the Stagecoach Bluff Trail towards Lizard Rock\, then down the Lizard Rock Trail to the water treatment plant where we pick up the Wildwood Canyon Trail\, crossing streams and tree canopies on the way to Paradise Falls. Upstream of the falls\, Indian Creek (Two Springs) Trail takes us back up to the main parking lot and completes our “Central Park” loop. This hike is approximately 5 miles with about a 800’ elevation gain/loss. \nDirections:\nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road and continue 2.6 miles to Avenida De Los Arboles\, then turn left. Continue for about a mile to the end and turn into the Wildwood parking lot on the left. \nFrom the 118\, travel west to the 23\, exit at Avenida De Los Arboles and turn right. Drive further than you remember having to drive to this trailhead (10 or 15 minutes). Turn left into the parking lot when the road ends. \nPlease review the guidelines (link to the guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPlan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace**\,** or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. DESCRIPTION:5.3 miles\, 600′ gain\, Easy-Intermediate\n2.5 miles\, 100′ gain\, Beginner \nWe start by crossing a bridge into a wooded area and continue down a relatively flat path alongside a stream. After about a mile\, we’ll come to a junction. \nFor those that want the full hike\, we’ll turn right and complete a 3 mile loop with 500′ of gain\, stopping just before the end of the loop for a social event at the picnic table on the left\, where we’ll share snacks and beverages for about 60 minutes. \nEasier Option.\nFor those that want to keep it beginner\, don’t turn right at the junction and continue for 1/4 mile and no gain. That same picnic table will be on the right. \nReturn.\nContinue the loop for 1/4 mile\, then a relatively flat walk back for about a mile. For those that took the easy option\, that same return is the way we came. \nHike Distance: 5.3 miles\, Beginner option is 2.5 miles.\nGain: 600′\, Beginner option is 100′.\nDistribution: Most of the incline is concentrated in the second quarter.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate/Easier option is beginner.\nShape: Lollipop.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road.\nTrail Variations: The first mile is mostly flat.\nAll of the trail is well groomed and not rugged.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: Yes\, at trailhead\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free in lot next to trail head. \nWhat to bring:\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots. Not required\, but recommended.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route. Click the link to see it. \nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed. \nHike type: Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \nInteresting Notes \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nWild Oats\nThe mature seed of the plant is used as a cereal grain. \nRed Brome\nGrass like with thorny appearing tops. A sub-species of foxtail chess. Can lead to flash fires. Winter fires don’t kill the seeds. \nDirections: \nHill Canyon Trailhead\n10241 Hill Canyon Road (address is before trailhead\, continue to gravel lot on left)\nSanta Rosa Valley\, CA 93012\nCoordinates of trailhead: 34.226495\, -118.930374 \nFrom CA-118:\nCA-118 west to CA-23 south.\nExit 19 Tierra Rejada Rd.\, turn right (west) for 0.5 miles\nLeft (south) on Moorpark Rd. for 1.4 miles.\nRight on Santa Rosa Rd. for 3.7 miles.\nLeft on Hill Canyon Rd. for 0.6 miles.\nParking in gravel lot on left. \nFrom CA-101 (from Camarillo and farther west):\nExit Santa Rosa Rd. north for 4.9 miles.\nTurn right (south) on Hill Canyon Rd. for 0.6 miles.\nParking in gravel lot on left. \nFrom CA-23 and CA-101 (from Thousand Oaks):\nNorth on CA-12 for 3.1 miles.\nExit 16 Sunset Hills Blvd. and left (west) for 0.9 miles.\nLeft (west) on E. Olsen Rd. for 0.8 miles.\nRight (north) on N. Moorpark Rd. for 1.9 miles.\nContinue on Santa Rosa Rd. west for 3.7 miles.\nTurn left (south) on Hill Canyon Rd. for 0.6 miles.\nParking in gravel lot on left. \nParking can be very tight because it is also popular with bicyclists. Car pooling suggested\, because it would be sad for someone to not be able to hike because there isn’t any place to park. \nFAQ\nHiking Plus Page Links\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

SUMMARY:Hike at Caspers Wilderness Park - Bell Canyon + Oso Trail
DESCRIPTION:The hike I am planning is around 6.3 miles with about 700 ft. of elevation gain. It starts at the very end of the paved road\, the long gray strip that can be seen on the map. \nWe will begin at the Bell Canyon Trail head. We will continue onto that and then take it to the Cougar Pass trail. We will go up that and make a left on Oso Trail. Once that ends\, we will come back down Bell Canyon Trail until we hit Star Ridge Trail. We will take this to West Ridge Trail and go left. This will take us to a single track trail\, Dick Loskorn Trail. This hits Nature Loops Trail and this will take us back to the beginning. \nThis is a beautiful hike with expansive views. It is a nice and remote hike\, so you are really out there in the wilderness. \nIf you have any questions regarding the park or the trails we will be on\, please let me know! \nHere is a link to the park map: http://ocparks.com/civicax/filebank/blobdload.aspx?BlobID=8164 \nThe address is: 33401 Ortega Hwy. San Juan Capistrano\, CA 92675 \nDogs are not allowed at this park. \nParking is $5\, unless you have an OC Parks Annual Permit. If you hike a lot\, it’s totally worth it: http://ocparks.com/about/fees/pass You can buy the pass at the park.
