SUMMARY:Mentryville: Pico Canyon Trail
DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION: It’s great to be planning hikes again after some time away to let a nagging foot injury heal. I’m starting with an old favorite that won’t be too hard for someone who hasn’t hiked in the better part of three months. It’s exciting to be hiking again! \nWe’ll start from Mentryville (a historic SCV site) located at the base of Pico Canyon’s chaparral-dominated slopes\, Mentryville was an 1880’s oil boom town built around its oil well\, Pico No. 4. Named for Charles Mentry\, historic buildings still stand including a grand thirteen-room mansion\, a one-room schoolhouse\, and a barn. Mentryville and Pico No. 4 are registered as California State Historical Landmarks. \nThe beginning of the hike is on an asphalt road which yields to a fire road and untimely a single-track trail. Pico Canyon Trail is another one of the local gems where in a just a short hike you’re miles from the hustle and bustle of modern life and into the wide-open spaces of the back country enjoying nature with great views. We’ll be getting started early to avoid the midday heat! \nDETAILS: \n\nMeet: Mentryville Parking lot where Pico Canyon Road ends at 7:00am\, departure at 7:15 am sharp (June 14).\nDistance: Approximately 6.8 miles.\nElevation gain: Approximately 1\,272 feet.\nTime: Approximately 3.5 hours hiking including one snack break (brisk pace).\nConditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition (this is not a beginner hike).\nDogs: Must be on leash.\nRestrooms – Yes at the park.\nAdventure Pass: Not required.\n\nIMPORTANT NOTES: We’ll hike at a brisk pace and ask everyone to stay with the group for a friendly and safe outing. Hiking may be hazardous due to uneven footing\, stream crossings\, exposures\, snakes\, bugs\, poison oak\, etc. Please be aware of your abilities and their limits. You are responsible for your own safety and well-being. This event may be cancelled due to any inclement weather or other conditions. You can check the weather and other conditions on the AllTrails GPS Trail Map link below. \nESSENTIAL GEAR: Hiking boots and poles. Clothing layers are recommended. Snacks and 2+ liters of water and electrolytes or salt tablets. Hat and sunscreen. \nThe Ten Essentials of Hiking (link) \nTHIS HIKE RANKING: Level 3\, Intermediate (see chart below).\nPlease only sign up to attend hikes that are consistent with your ability. Based on your hiking during the last 90 days\, how would you score on the CHC Hike rating scale of one to five assuming a brisk pace? \nCHC HIKE RANKING SCALE:\n1. Beginner: 1-3 miles\, less than 500 feet elevation gain.\n2. Beginner/Intermediate: 1-7 miles\, less than 700 feet elevation gain.\n3. Intermediate: 5-10 miles\, 1000-2000 feet elevation gain.\n4. Intermediate/Advanced: 7-12 miles\, up to 3000 feet elevation gain.\n5. SUMMARY:Ray Miller Trail in La Jolla Canyon ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:This hike will be Gentler Intermediate and Earlier of the Tuesday hikes!\nThe trail is an awesome blend of ocean and mountain views in Malibu’s La Jolla Canyon. We will start from the trailhead which follows the canyon eastward\, away from the ocean. Then\, it quickly brings you back toward the ocean at a gradual incline. There’s a great lookout spot where it gives you a breathtaking view of the Pacific Coast Highway against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean\, with sweeping views toward Mugu Rock on the west and Sycamore Cove on the east. After another peak\, you’ll start a slight decline that brings you to the fire road where we will turn around. Along the way\, we’ll be treated to magnificent sweeping views of La Jolla and Big Sycamore Canyons\, and of course\, the largest ocean in the world. On a clear day\, the Channel Islands are easily within sight\, although the marine layer has been pretty prominent this summer.\nThis is a 5-6 mile out and back hike with an elevation gain/loss of about 1000’. \nDirections: \nFrom Los Angeles\, take the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) north\, 22 miles from Malibu Canyon Rd. Across the street from Thornhill Broome Beach is the entrance to La Jolla Canyon. It is very clearly marked. Turn right. \nFrom Ventura\, take PCH eastward\, and turn left 4 miles after Las Posas Road into La Jolla Canyon. \nHeads up: There is a parking fee in the lot (or free with state parking pass). There is free parking on PCH just a short walk to the trailhead. \nPlease review the guidelines (guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPlan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Encinal Canyon to Top of the World ~ Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:Encinal Canyon is named for encina\, the Spanish word for the holm oak\, a lovely Mediterranean tree with holly characteristics. Holm oaks are one of the main trees used to establish truffle orchards\, but we’ll be nosing around the canyon strictly for its beauty. \nThe trail from Encinal is a smooth\, firm\, and well-traveled single track\, swooping and winding with a constant\, gentle slope. We’ll have fabulous views of the coast for much of the way. Close to the top\, we’ll take on the slightly steeper Etz Meloy Motorway\, then the last tenth of a mile is up a seldom-used trail to the isolated peak\, where we’ll both lose and catch our breath with a 360-degree view. \nFrom our perch above it all we’ll see Sandstone Peak to the west\, Simi Valley to the north\, Ladyface and Mt Baldy to the east and the Channel Islands to the south and west. \nThis is a 8 mile out and back hike\, with about 1200′ of elevation gain. \nNOTE: Please review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. Here are some highlights and a link to the guidelines:\nhttps://www.meetup.com/The-Weekday-Trailblazers/about/\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours:\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nPlan on completing the entire hike at an intermediate pace or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo dogs allowed. \nDirections: \nThe parking area is off the north side of Encinal Canyon Road\, almost directly across the street from the Camp 13 fire station & Rattle Snake Road. Park in the large dirt lot\, which is free. \nFrom the 101 Freeway\, turn south on Kanan Rd. Continue 6.2 miles\, then turn right onto Mulholland Hwy. After 0.9 miles\, veer left onto Encinal Canyon Rd. Drive 2.4 miles to the parking area\, on the right. \nFrom the Pacific Coast Highway – From the PCH\, turn up Encinal Canyon Road. Drive 5 miles\, then turn right onto Encinal Cyn Rd. Continue 1.1 miles to the parking area\, on the left. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Chumash - Intermediate\, with Easy option
DESCRIPTION:4 miles\, 950′ gain\, Intermediate\nEasy Option: 1.6 miles\, 400′ gain\, Fit Beginner\nHardest option: 5 miles\, 1200′ gain\, Intermediate \nThe entire hike outbound is a steady incline. Nothing super steep\, just continuous and quite strenuous for many. There are virtually no junctions where one can get lost. \nThis is one of the more famous hikes in Simi Valley\, and for good reason. Much of the hike takes place along the edge of the mountain. The trail in spots is a bit rugged and rocky\, so a good tread on your shoes is recommended. \nIt is a part of the Chumash Natural Park that includes sandstone rock formations\, caves\, and beautiful vistas of Simi Valley. The land is owned by the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy and the Rancho Simi Recreation & Park District. It is maintained by the Rancho Simi Trailblazers and patrolled by the Volunteer Trail Safety Service. \nWe’ll all begin the climb together. Those doing the easier option will stop after 0.8 miles and wait for about 45 minutes until the rest of us return to this spot for our social event. While waiting\, they can continue to climb any portion they want and return to this spot\, or just take in the views. \nThe rest will continue for 1.3 miles until a flat rock. Those that want the hardest option\, continue for another 0.5 miles and 250′ gain to the end of the trail. Head back down the same way to the social event spot. \nAt the social event spot\, we’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of Simi Valley and will share snacks and beverages. \nThere is really no way to get lost on this hike\, so everybody will move along at whatever pace they want. \nHike (click this link for a pic)\nDistance: 4.0 miles (1.5 mi for easy option\, 5.0 mi for hardest option)\nGain: 950′ (400′ for easy option\, 1200′ for hardest option)\nDistribution: Most of the incline is concentrated in the first half.\nDifficulty: Intermediate (Fit Beginer for easy option\, Intermediate for hardest option)\nShape: Out and back.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road\, double track\, single track.\nTrail Variations: The entire first half is incline. Some of the trail is rugged sandstone. Some of the trail is covered in large gravel.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along street. \nWhat to bring: 1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots. Not required\, but recommended.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share \nHosting\nRoute: The host knows the route. A pic of the route has been posted as part of this description.\nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed.\nHike type: Social. \nInteresting Notes\nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nCalifornia Encelia\nAka\, California Bush Sunflower\, California Brittlebush\, Coast Sunflower\, El Dorado. \nCenter is brown. When the center is yellow\, it is Brittlebush\, from the brittleness of the stems. This is from the daisy family\, and it is typically used as an ornamental plant. \nMediterranean Mustard / Black Mustard\nMediterranean mustard seeds are yellow or white\, while Black mustard seeds are brown or black. The flowers look the same. \nFlowers\, leaves (mustard greens)\, and roots are edible. Can be used as a spice. Grind seeds and mix with water and vinegar to make prepared mustard. This is often a very abundant noxious weed (has been designated by an agricultural authority as one that is injurious to agricultural or horticultural crops\, natural habitats or ecosystems\, or humans or livestock.). It grows everywhere along the sides of the trail\, often having to be cut back during trail maintenance. \nDid you know that cabbage\, mustard greens\, collard greens\, kale\, broccoli\, cauliflower\, brussels sprouts\, and prepared mustard\, are all from different parts of the wild mustard plant? \nDirections\nChumash Trail\n3200 Flanagan Dr.\nSimi Valley\, CA 93063\nCoordinates of trailhead: 34.293497\, -118.671176 \nFrom CA-118\nI-118\, exit Yosemite.\nNorth on Yosemite for 1.3 miles.\nRight (east) on Flanagan Dr. for 08. miles.\nContinue until the street ends and park. \nFAQ\nHiking Plus Page Links\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

SUMMARY:Rancho Potrero Ridgeline - sorta Gentler (5 miles ±900')
DESCRIPTION:Note that this is a different start than the usual Rancho Sierra Vista Parking Lot!! Read carefully!! We have not done this hike for a while. \nWe will meet at the Rancho Potrero COSCA trailhead parking area just west of the Equestrian Center on Lynn / Potrero. Pay attention as this is different than the Parking Lot where we often meet. \nThis will be a loop through the COSCA trails west of RSV\, climbing to the ridgeline above Sycamore Canyon to the south and Lynn Road to the north. Lots of ups and downs until we briefly visit the Satwiwa Interpretive Center for water and bathroom break. From there\, the route back to the cars comprises less elevation gain and loss. \nCurrently\, the weather forecast for Thursday is foggy in the morning\, clearing about the time we’re done\, with a high (!) of 70°. As always\, bring plenty of water\, wide hat\, sturdy shoes or boots and hiking poles if you favor them. \nTotal distance is roughly 5 miles\, with about 900′ of elevation gain and loss. Other than the fog\, there is little shade during this hike. \nNote that this is a gentler hike but not a beginner hike. It is a convoluted trail with some steep sections\, so we will pause occasionally to try to keep the group together. We will go about 2.5mph. Tricky turns will be marked. \nDirections: \nTake Highway 101 to Thousand Oaks. Exit at Lynn Road\, and drive 6.5 miles southwest. You will cross Ventu Park\, Wendy\, and Reino and pass the two entrances to the Equestrian Center before getting to the COSCA Rancho Potrero Trailhead lot on the left. If you get to the top of the canyon towards CSUCI\, you’ve gone too far! \nLunch Afterwards: Three Amigos on Reino Road in Newbury Park \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. If you are able to proceed\, it is expected that you will maintain line of sight with other members of the group at all times and help to promote the group’s safety and fitness goals. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you are taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. \nIf you choose to sign up for this or any Weekday Trailblazers Meetup event\, you are releasing the Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group\, its organizers\, and sponsors from all liability in case of possible injuries. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience. You agree that you can navigate back to your transportation by yourself\, and agree to do so if you fall behind and lose track of the main body of hikers. \nBy now you should know the guidelines to participate in our morning hikes. Please review them before you sign up for the hike. And just in case\, here are some highlights and a link to the guidelines: \nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nIf you’ve registered for more than one hike at this time\, withdraw from at least one\nUnregistered or waitlisted will be turned away\nAll participants must be 18 or older or accompanied by an adult\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nPlan on completing the entire hike or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level\nNo dogs on this hike\nBring ample hydration

SUMMARY:Upper Sycamore Canyon Loop - Gentler Hike.
DESCRIPTION:We are starting at 9:00 (it will be cooler and there are lots of trees) and start at the Rancho Sierra Vista parking lot. We go down to paved road to the bridge on Sycamore Canyon\, but then turn up the canyon alongside Upper Sycamore Creek. Along the way\, we’ll be in the shade of Boney Mountain while we climb\, doing a handful of easy water crossings and (if we’re lucky this late in the season) finding a few wildflowers along the way. We’ll get to the Old Boney Trail\, and climb back up and out. \nThis hike is about 5 miles with an elevation loss and gain of approximately 750’. \nDirections: Take 101 Freeway to Lynn Road. Go south 5.5 miles to the wood and stone archway for Rancho Sierra Vista\, and drive all the way in to the restrooms (the innermost parking lot). Google / Apple Maps will lead you astray! \nPlease review the guidelines (guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPlan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace\, or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Limekiln Canyon Lollipop - Suitable for beginners
DESCRIPTION:4 mi\, 500′ gain\, beginner\nEasier option: 1.5 mi\, 125′ gain\, beginner. \nThis is a beginner hike on the beautiful Limekiln trail. \nThis hike is a slight lollipop\, (the shape of the route). There are no extended inclines\, however there are about 5 bumps in the trail with 25-40′ gains\, about 35-65 steps each. This is something a beginner would be able to handle\, but these bumps will get the blood pumping\, as they are like climbing up to 4 flights of stairs. There is nothing wrong with pausing for a breather while tackling these bumps in the trail. \nThe trail varies between asphalt\, gravel fire road\, single tracker\, tree covered\, hilly\, roadside\, wooded\, open air\, and strolls through the park. \nWe’ll enter Limekiln Canyon\, where we’ll first encounter a heavily wooded park with large pine trees lining the trail and blocking out the sun. After about 0.2 miles\, there will be a split. We can go either way because they rejoin after about 100 yards\, but for this route\, we’ll go left. \nAfter another half mile\, the route makes a turn to the right. Those that want the super-easy route should continue straight for 100 yards to a log\, where they can wait about 45 min for the rest of us to return for the social event. \nThe rest of the group will follow the trail to the right and continue for about 1.2 miles. We’ll reach Sesnon Blvd.\, travel about 20 yards west\, and head back in on a different trail. \nAfter several hundred yards\, we’ll reconnect with the original trail for the return. \nJust before we complete the last 3/4 mile\, we’ll turn right instead of left. After about 100 yards\, we’ll find a great spot with a giant fallen tree trunk to have a social event snack and beverage share. \nAfter about 30-60 minutes\, we’ll continue the last 3/4 mile back to our cars. Those that don’t want to stick around are welcome to head back to their cars by any route they choose\, but I’ll take a few splits to the left and cover some different trails\, each that returns back to the original trail after several hundred yards. \nThere will be a couple creek crossings\, where one will use a few stepping stones to avoid getting wet. Click HERE for route. \nInteresting Notes\nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nCalifornia Buckwheat\nWhen the white flowers turn a rusty brown\, they can be crushed into a powder\, mixed with water\, and baked into bread. The black seeds in the flower heads are also edible. Don’t touch the white flowers if bees are around because they won’t like it and may attack. A cold tea made from the leaves has been used to treat stomachaches and headaches. A warm tea made from the roots has been used to treat colds. The stems are stiff and flexible\, so they have been used by Indians as piercing utensils. \nLaurel Sumac\nRed stems and outline along leaves. The dried flower bunches look like small trees\, and are used by model railroad builders as such\, after being dyed green. Laurel sumac is sensitive to cold and does not tolerate freezing conditions. Orange growers in the early history of southern California used to pick places to plant their oranges based on where laurel sumac was growing because this indicated it would not get too cold for oranges if laurel sumac could grow there. For some\, the sap will irritate their skin just like poison oak\, causing blisters. Also called “Taco Plant”. \nDirections:\nLimekiln Canyon Trail\nPorter Ranch\, CA 91326 \nFrom the 118\nExit Tampa Ave (3 miles east of the Topanga Canyon exit) and head north for 1000′.\nLeft (west) on Rinaldi St. for 1000′.\nTrailhead on the right (north).\nPark on either side of the street. \nThe Hike\nDistance: 4 miles\nElevation Gain: 500′\nDifficulty: Easy\nPace: 2.5 mph\nDogs: Yes\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No\nParking: Free on either side of the street in front of the trail head.\nTrail: Varied. Good condition. \nWhat to Bring:\nSnacks and/or beverages to share\n1-2 liters of water.\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp. \nFAQ\nHiking Plus Page Links\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

SUMMARY:San Jacinto Wilderness one night backpack to Hidden Lake and Tahquitz peak.
DESCRIPTION:Details\nJune 21st-22nd\, 2025 – San Jacinto Wilderness one night backpack to Hidden Lake and Tahquitz peak. \n16 miles total and 4\,700′ gain over both days. The camp will be a remote site in the Skunk cabbage area. \nThis is the first of four training hikes for the High Sierra Trail trek in September. (Giant Forest to Mount whitney\, September 20th to October 4th. Hiking Days September 22nd to October 2nd or 3rd.) Priority will be given to those interested in the HST trip\, but all training hikes are open to the general group if space permits. \nThe pace of the HST trip will be modest. The intent is to enjoy the experience rather than to race each other to Mount Whitney. \nMeet at 7:00 am at Humber Park. (Devil’s slide trailhead.) Bring an adventure pass \nAdd yourself to the waitlist and I will move you to going in late May once I receive feedback on the High Sierra Trail participation. There is a 12-person limit for this backpack. \nThe plan. Hike the Devil’s slide trail to Saddle junction (8000ft) and take the willow creek trail\, past our Saturday camp site and on to Hidden Lake and Desert View (8800 ft) in the State wilderness. (No dogs allowed in the State wilderness.) After a break at desert view\, we will retrace our steps back to our campsite in the Skunk Cabbage area. (8100 ft) \nSunday we will go back to saddle junction and follow the PCT/South Ridge trail above Lily Rock and over to a fire tower at Tahquitz Peak. (8900 ft) We will then retrace our steps back to Saddle Junction and back down the Devil’s slide trail to the cars. (Probably about 5:00pm.) \nBring at least 3 liters of water and a water filter/Treatment pills\, enough food (Backpacking Dinner in camp) and snacks to sustain you on this endeavor. Your ten essentials are always required. Know your limits if you are sensitive to altitude. Turn around if needed. \nHike description: GPX files for Day 1 and Day 2 will be sent to participants in advance. \nMap of the area\, not showing route:\nhttps://www.alltrails.com/explore?b_br_lat=33.76061131584278&b_br_lng=-116.62368248909098&b_tl_lat=33.798442064857625&b_tl_lng=-116.7032307989143 \nDISCLAIMER: Hike at your own risk. Be responsible for yourself and your safety. Make good decisions. With any trip\, things can change\, reservations can get lost\, the unexpected can happen. A go-with-the-flow attitude is always a good thing\, and most importantly\, let’s all have fun! Make sure you are in good enough physical shape for the distance\, elevation changes\, and terrain. The hike leaders in this group aren’t professional hike leaders. By signing up for these events\, you agree not to hold the Meetup organizers responsible for whatever happens to you on these events. Please reference the map for a detailed location as there aren’t many streets to list for directions. \nThe hike we will be doing will start on the Little Sycamore Canyon Trail. Then we will turn left onto the Serrano Ridge Trail\, then another left onto the Camarillo Canyon Trail. We will make a left on the Stagecoach South Trail and take that back to the beginning. \nMost of the trails are moderate\, with one part having a decent incline. \nHere is a link to the park map: \nhttps://ocparks.com/lagunacoast \nDogs are not allowed at this park. \nParking is $3\, unless you have an OC Parks Annual Permit. If you hike a lot\, it’s totally worth it: http://ocparks.com/about/fees/pass

If your item requires paper plates\, utensils\, etc. please bring them. You may wish to bring your own cup\, plate\, and utensils in case there aren’t any. \nPot Luck guidelines link \nWe will meet at the Grasslands trail head off of Mulholland Hwy and take the Grasslands Trail with a gentle climb and connect to the High Road (~3/4 miles). SUMMARY:Arroyo Canyon Trail to Lynnmere Trail ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:We will start by following the pleasant single-track on the left (not the road to the right\, which descends to a dead-end at the creek) from the Rancho Conejo Playfields in Newbury Park. The trail skirts the edge of a neighborhood and its steep-walled canyon\, which provides great scenic views along the Barranca and through riparian native plant communities\, Wildwood Park\, and the Pacific Ocean. There is a creek crossing with rocks and wood pallets to make “dry crossing” easy when we reach the bottom of the canyon. Then\, we will turn right at a T-junction and begin a steady climb out of the canyon to the Lynnmere Trail. The trail passes the backs of some houses\, dips into a woodland\, and emerges into a meadow where we get a panoramic view to the west. Here\, we will retrace our way back to the Arroyo Conejo Trail and back to the parking lot.\nThis hike is about 5 miles long with an elevation gain/loss of approximately 1000 feet. \nDirections:\nFrom 101 Freeway\, drive 1/4 mile north on Ventu Park Rd. Turn right into the parking lot at the Rancho Conejo Playfields (at 950 N. Ventu Park Road) and the Arroyo Conejo trailhead is on the right. \nPlease Review The Guidelines to join our hikes: Here is some highlights for your safety and ours;
• Don’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.
• Plan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace.\n
DISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY
The hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Long Canyon - Easy CC Loop - Suitable for Fit Beginners
DESCRIPTION:3 miles\, 650′ gain\, Fit Beginner\nEasy option\, 1.4 miles\, 450′ gain\, Fit Beginner \nThe address given\, is not the address of the hike. It is a nearby address that may cause your GPS to drive past the trailhead. \nThose that prefer the Easy Option\, should head UP from the trail head\, waiting when they get to the bench at the top. \nFor the rest of us: Starting from the trailhead parking lot\, we head west on the Woodridge Connector along the sides of houses\, which is the back way. This is a relatively flat section for about 3/4 mile. \nLeft when arriving at the asphalt along Woodridge Loop Trail\, immediate right at the split\, then continue until it comes to an end at a junction. Left and continue to another junction. Make a right\, go about 50′ to another junction\, make a right again\, then 300′ to Autumn Ridge Trail. \nLeft and continue for about a mile. This is a fire road and a steady climb. We continue until 5-points junction. \nMake a sharp left onto Sunrise trail\, then up to the bench. There\, we’ll meet with those that took the easy option\, and stop for a snack and beverage share. \nFor the return\, we’ll turn right and follow Long Canyon Trail down to the parking lot. \nInteresting Notes:\nTake notice of the Eucalyptus tree at the trailhead. \nAlong the left side of the trail during the last 200′ (last because we are doing a counter-clockwise loop)\, you will see: \nWhite Sage – the leaves are very fragrant when pinched\nElderberry – The blue or purple berries can be made into elderberry wine\, jam\, syrup\, and pies. \nHike\nDistance: 3 mi (easier option\, 1.4 mi)\nGain: 650′ (easier option\, 450′)\nDistribution: A moderate fire-road climb at the middle portion of the hike.\nDifficulty: Fit Beginner.\nShape: Loop\, counter-clockwise.\nPace: 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road\, single and double track. Areas of sand\, gravel\, and rock\, some of it rugged.\nTrail Variations: The beginning is a flat walk. The middle has an extended incline of about 1000 steps. This hike includes an extended stop for a snack and beverage share just before the last segment down. \nWe’ll stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda or some sticks in the shape of an arrow. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nDirections\nWhere Long Canyon Rd. and S. Wood Ranch Pkwy. intersect in Simi Valley. There is a free paved lot at the trailhead on the southwest corner. \nFrom CA-23 and I-101\nNorth CA-23\, exit Olsen Rd.\nRight (east) on Olsen Rd.\, which becomes Madera Rd.\, for 2 miles.\nRight (south) on N. Wood Ranch Pkwy.\, which becomes S. Wood Ranch Pkwy.\, for 2 miles.\nRight at dead end (intersection with Long Canyon Rd.) and immediate left into parking lot.\nTrailhead at the opposite corner. \nFrom CA-118 and CA-27\nWest CA-118\, exit 23 onto 1st St.\nLeft (south) on 1st St.\, which becomes Long Canyon Rd.\, for 5 miles.\nCross at dead end (intersection with S.
