SUMMARY:San Jacinto Wilderness one night backpack to Hidden Lake and Tahquitz peak.
DESCRIPTION:Details\nJune 21st-22nd\, 2025 – San Jacinto Wilderness one night backpack to Hidden Lake and Tahquitz peak. \n16 miles total and 4\,700′ gain over both days. The camp will be a remote site in the Skunk cabbage area. \nThis is the first of four training hikes for the High Sierra Trail trek in September. (Giant Forest to Mount whitney\, September 20th to October 4th. Hiking Days September 22nd to October 2nd or 3rd.) Priority will be given to those interested in the HST trip\, but all training hikes are open to the general group if space permits. \nThe pace of the HST trip will be modest. The intent is to enjoy the experience rather than to race each other to Mount Whitney. \nMeet at 7:00 am at Humber Park. (Devil’s slide trailhead.) Bring an adventure pass \nAdd yourself to the waitlist and I will move you to going in late May once I receive feedback on the High Sierra Trail participation. There is a 12-person limit for this backpack. \nThe plan. Hike the Devil’s slide trail to Saddle junction (8000ft) and take the willow creek trail\, past our Saturday camp site and on to Hidden Lake and Desert View (8800 ft) in the State wilderness. (No dogs allowed in the State wilderness.) After a break at desert view\, we will retrace our steps back to our campsite in the Skunk Cabbage area. (8100 ft) \nSunday we will go back to saddle junction and follow the PCT/South Ridge trail above Lily Rock and over to a fire tower at Tahquitz Peak. (8900 ft) We will then retrace our steps back to Saddle Junction and back down the Devil’s slide trail to the cars. (Probably about 5:00pm.) \nBring at least 3 liters of water and a water filter/Treatment pills\, enough food (Backpacking Dinner in camp) and snacks to sustain you on this endeavor. Your ten essentials are always required. Know your limits if you are sensitive to altitude. Turn around if needed. \nHike description: GPX files for Day 1 and Day 2 will be sent to participants in advance. \nMap of the area\, not showing route:\nhttps://www.alltrails.com/explore?b_br_lat=33.76061131584278&b_br_lng=-116.62368248909098&b_tl_lat=33.798442064857625&b_tl_lng=-116.7032307989143 \nDISCLAIMER: Hike at your own risk. Be responsible for yourself and your safety. Make good decisions. With any trip\, things can change\, reservations can get lost\, the unexpected can happen. A go-with-the-flow attitude is always a good thing\, and most importantly\, let’s all have fun! Make sure you are in good enough physical shape for the distance\, elevation changes\, and terrain. The hike leaders in this group aren’t professional hike leaders. By signing up for these events\, you agree not to hold the Meetup organizers responsible for whatever happens to you on these events. The hiking group does not certify the expertise of the organizers\, the event or assistant organizers (hike leaders) and…We are NOT responsible for any possible losses\, injuries\, or death.

SUMMARY:Arroyo Canyon Trail to Lynnmere Trail ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:We will start by following the pleasant single-track on the left (not the road to the right\, which descends to a dead-end at the creek) from the Rancho Conejo Playfields in Newbury Park. The trail skirts the edge of a neighborhood and its steep-walled canyon\, which provides great scenic views along the Barranca and through riparian native plant communities\, Wildwood Park\, and the Pacific Ocean. There is a creek crossing with rocks and wood pallets to make “dry crossing” easy when we reach the bottom of the canyon. Then\, we will turn right at a T-junction and begin a steady climb out of the canyon to the Lynnmere Trail. The trail passes the backs of some houses\, dips into a woodland\, and emerges into a meadow where we get a panoramic view to the west. Here\, we will retrace our way back to the Arroyo Conejo Trail and back to the parking lot.\nThis hike is about 5 miles long with an elevation gain/loss of approximately 1000 feet. \nDirections:\nFrom 101 Freeway\, drive 1/4 mile north on Ventu Park Rd. Turn right into the parking lot at the Rancho Conejo Playfields (at 950 N. Ventu Park Road) and the Arroyo Conejo trailhead is on the right. \nPlease Review The Guidelines to join our hikes: Here is some highlights for your safety and ours;
• Don’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.
• Plan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace.\n
DISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY
The hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Long Canyon - Easy CC Loop - Suitable for Fit Beginners
DESCRIPTION:3 miles\, 650′ gain\, Fit Beginner\nEasy option\, 1.4 miles\, 450′ gain\, Fit Beginner \nThe address given\, is not the address of the hike. It is a nearby address that may cause your GPS to drive past the trailhead. \nThose that prefer the Easy Option\, should head UP from the trail head\, waiting when they get to the bench at the top. \nFor the rest of us: Starting from the trailhead parking lot\, we head west on the Woodridge Connector along the sides of houses\, which is the back way. This is a relatively flat section for about 3/4 mile. \nLeft when arriving at the asphalt along Woodridge Loop Trail\, immediate right at the split\, then continue until it comes to an end at a junction. Left and continue to another junction. Make a right\, go about 50′ to another junction\, make a right again\, then 300′ to Autumn Ridge Trail. \nLeft and continue for about a mile. This is a fire road and a steady climb. We continue until 5-points junction. \nMake a sharp left onto Sunrise trail\, then up to the bench. There\, we’ll meet with those that took the easy option\, and stop for a snack and beverage share. \nFor the return\, we’ll turn right and follow Long Canyon Trail down to the parking lot. \nInteresting Notes:\nTake notice of the Eucalyptus tree at the trailhead. \nAlong the left side of the trail during the last 200′ (last because we are doing a counter-clockwise loop)\, you will see: \nWhite Sage – the leaves are very fragrant when pinched\nElderberry – The blue or purple berries can be made into elderberry wine\, jam\, syrup\, and pies. \nHike\nDistance: 3 mi (easier option\, 1.4 mi)\nGain: 650′ (easier option\, 450′)\nDistribution: A moderate fire-road climb at the middle portion of the hike.\nDifficulty: Fit Beginner.\nShape: Loop\, counter-clockwise.\nPace: 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road\, single and double track. This hike includes an extended stop for a snack and beverage share just before the last segment down. \nWe’ll stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda or some sticks in the shape of an arrow. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nDirections\nWhere Long Canyon Rd. and S. Wood Ranch Pkwy. intersect in Simi Valley. There is a free paved lot at the trailhead on the southwest corner. \nFrom CA-23 and I-101\nNorth CA-23\, exit Olsen Rd.\nRight (east) on Olsen Rd.\, which becomes Madera Rd.\, for 2 miles.\nRight (south) on N. SUMMARY:Chumash - Intermediate\, with Easy option
DESCRIPTION:4 miles\, 950′ gain\, Intermediate\nEasy Option: 1.6 miles\, 400′ gain\, Fit Beginner\nHardest option: 5 miles\, 1200′ gain\, Intermediate \nThe entire hike outbound is a steady incline. Nothing super steep\, just continuous and quite strenuous for many. There are virtually no junctions where one can get lost. \nThis is one of the more famous hikes in Simi Valley\, and for good reason. Much of the hike takes place along the edge of the mountain. The trail in spots is a bit rugged and rocky\, so a good tread on your shoes is recommended. \nIt is a part of the Chumash Natural Park that includes sandstone rock formations\, caves\, and beautiful vistas of Simi Valley. The land is owned by the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy and the Rancho Simi Recreation & Park District. It is maintained by the Rancho Simi Trailblazers and patrolled by the Volunteer Trail Safety Service. \nWe’ll all begin the climb together. Those doing the easier option will stop after 0.8 miles and wait for about 45 minutes until the rest of us return to this spot for our social event. While waiting\, they can continue to climb any portion they want and return to this spot\, or just take in the views. \nThe rest will continue for 1.3 miles until a flat rock. Those that want the hardest option\, continue for another 0.5 miles and 250′ gain to the end of the trail. Head back down the same way to the social event spot. \nAt the social event spot\, we’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of Simi Valley and will share snacks and beverages. \nThere is really no way to get lost on this hike\, so everybody will move along at whatever pace they want. \nHike (click this link for a pic)\nDistance: 4.0 miles (1.5 mi for easy option\, 5.0 mi for hardest option)\nGain: 950′ (400′ for easy option\, 1200′ for hardest option)\nDistribution: Most of the incline is concentrated in the first half.\nDifficulty: Intermediate (Fit Beginer for easy option\, Intermediate for hardest option)\nShape: Out and back.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road\, double track\, single track.\nTrail Variations: The entire first half is incline. Some of the trail is rugged sandstone. Some of the trail is covered in large gravel.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along street. \nWhat to bring: 1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots. Not required\, but recommended.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share \nHosting\nRoute: The host knows the route. A pic of the route has been posted as part of this description.\nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed.\nHike type: Social. \nInteresting Notes\nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nCalifornia Encelia\nAka\, California Bush Sunflower\, California Brittlebush\, Coast Sunflower\, El Dorado. \nCenter is brown. When the center is yellow\, it is Brittlebush\, from the brittleness of the stems. This is from the daisy family\, and it is typically used as an ornamental plant. \nMediterranean Mustard / Black Mustard\nMediterranean mustard seeds are yellow or white\, while Black mustard seeds are brown or black. The flowers look the same. \nFlowers\, leaves (mustard greens)\, and roots are edible. Can be used as a spice. Grind seeds and mix with water and vinegar to make prepared mustard. This is often a very abundant noxious weed (has been designated by an agricultural authority as one that is injurious to agricultural or horticultural crops\, natural habitats or ecosystems\, or humans or livestock.). It grows everywhere along the sides of the trail\, often having to be cut back during trail maintenance. \nDid you know that cabbage\, mustard greens\, collard greens\, kale\, broccoli\, cauliflower\, brussels sprouts\, and prepared mustard\, are all from different parts of the wild mustard plant? \nDirections\nChumash Trail\n3200 Flanagan Dr.\nSimi Valley\, CA 93063\nCoordinates of trailhead: 34.293497\, -118.671176 \nFrom CA-118\nI-118\, exit Yosemite.\nNorth on Yosemite for 1.3 miles.\nRight (east) on Flanagan Dr. for 08. miles.\nContinue until the street ends and park. \nFAQ\nHiking Plus Page Links\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

DESCRIPTION:Just off the ocean\, Sycamore Canyon is a wide\, seemingly flat stroll among grasses\, wildflower\, and sycamore trees\, surrounded by mountains on both sides. \nRather than letting that lull you into a false sense of complacency\, we’ll take a left turn just after we start\, and hike up the southern fork of Overlook Trail to its intersection with the top of the Ray Miller Trail\, then back down to Sycamore Canyon\, and maybe up the canyon a little further for a total of 7.5 miles and 1\,200 feet of elevation gain and loss\, more or less. Hiker’s choice! \nWe’re almost certain to spy (and hear) wild parakeets along our route. Far from the petite parakeets we’re familiar with\, these birds closely resemble their parrot cousins. There are several stories floating around about their origin\, including that they were released from the old LA Zoo\, but we certainly know where they are now. \nDirections: \nGet yourself onto PCH\, near the Port Hueneme end of Malibu. You can take Kanan Rd and turn right on PCH\, or Las Posas Rd and turn left on PCH\, whichever works best for you. \nThe trailhead is located 5 miles south/east of Point Mugu off of Pacific Coast Highway (between Point Mugu and Neptune’s Net)\, in the Sycamore Canyon campground (across from Sycamore Canyon Beach). The address listed is approximate\, just to get you in the general area – turn onto Sycamore Canyon Rd. away from the ocean and head to the day use parking lot. \nParking is available in the campground for $12 (or free with a State Parking Permit)\, so you may want to carpool. Free parking may be available on PCH\, 1/4 mile from the campground – allow a few extra minutes if you park on PCH. \nSee you there! \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike hosts are volunteers and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. If you are able to proceed\, it is expected that you will maintain line of sight with other members of the group at all times and help to promote the group’s safety and fitness goals. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you are taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. \nIf you choose to sign up for this or any Group event\, you are releasing the Group and its organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries. You take personal responsibility for keeping up with the group\, or finding your way back to the trailhead and your own transportation in case you lose sight of the other hikers. \nYour personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience. \nAll participants must be 18 or older\, or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. \nSorry\, no dogs\, or Plus Ones on this event. We’ll be hiking on State Park land (where dogs are not allowed). By now\, your friends should already have registered for The Weekday Trailblazers\, and can sign up on their own.

SUMMARY:Sage Ranch Lollipop - Fit Beginner
DESCRIPTION:3 miles. 560′ gain\, fit beginner\nThis is a special hike that we typically do just once or twice about this time of year during the week\, because of the late sunset time. \nFree parking is limited. Carpooling recommended. \nAs of June 2024\, the first part of the clockwise loop was closed\, but we found a new route with a perfect place for a snack-share\, complete with picnic table. \nWe’ll head up the ramp and begin the hike counter-clockwise. This ramp will be the only significant incline\, but is still suitable for fit beginners. It is paved\, runs 1/4 mile\, and about 125′ of gain. \nAs we continue\, there will be a trail junction heading to the right and behind the rocks. For this hike\, many will venture up on the rocks to a secret area where the rock has been carved out. Those then venture up\, will then come back to the main trail. \nWe’ll continue on the main trail and follow it the rest of the way around. When we come to a sign that says “detour” because the path forward is closed\, we’ll take the detour. \nShortly after the detour starts\, there will be a picnic table to the right. We’ll stop there for a social event. Please bring snacks and drink to share. \nThis time of year\, there can be insects. Long pants and your preferred bug spray are recommended. This area is known for rattlesnakes\, especially as evening approaches\, so keep a look out. \nIt is a steady climb up most of the way back\, but fit beginners can handle it. It will eventually lead us back to the top parking lot. From there\, we’ll take the asphalt path and down to our cars. \nThis takes us through Sage Ranch Park\, with interesting rock formations all around\, a very cool overlook onto the valley at the half way point\, and even an overlook onto part of the old Santa Suzanna nuclear test facility. \nAbout the parking\nThere are two spots to park. The first (where we will meet)\, is right at the entrance along the west edge of Black Canyon Rd. This is a free gravel lot\, but parking is limited to about 30 cars. \nThe top (not recommended).\nIf the free lots gets filled\, about 500′ west up a steep incline\, there is another lot with payment required via self-pay envelopes. If you plan on parking in this lot\, bring exact change from $5-15\, as I’m not sure of the cost. The gate to this lot closes at sunset\, so if you are still parked there after the gate closes\, you will be locked in\, and get a ticket. \nFirst\, we’ll walk up to the upper lot. You can start up there if you don’t want to make the climb from the lower lot\, but: The park is officially open from sunrise to sunset. If you do park in the upper pay lot\, be sure you return before sunset\, else risk a ticket and being locked in by a ranger. \nInteresting Notes \nBlack Sage\nMultiple brown buttons going up the top of the stalk\, that may have white flowers. Green leaves. Purple or white flowers that are dark brown as they dry on the plant. Squish the leaves and smell. \nA rare and sought after Black sage honey is also made from the honey of bees that pollinate the Black sage plant. Black sage is utilized in the culinary world as an aromatic and flavorful herb. It can be used in recipes wherever traditional sage is called for\, however keep in mind that foraged Black sage has a much stronger flavor than that of traditional store bought sage. \nIts flavor marries well with winter squashes\, brown butter\, poultry\, venison\, pears\, cheese\, potatoes and other herbs such as rosemary and thyme. Use fresh in a variety of different preparations or leaves can be dried and stored for future use as a dried herb. Black sage was used traditionally by Native Americans known as the Chumash people to form an herbal soak for the bath to be used in the treatment of bodily pain\, specifically for the feet and lower legs. \nYerba Santa\nSaint Herb\, Holy Plant\, Mountain Balm. \nThe Spanish who came to early California were so impressed with the plant that they gave it the name Yerba Santa. \nLeaves were chewed to relieve dry mouth. Leaves were smoked or chewed to relieve asthma\, coughs\, colds\, headaches\, and stomachaches. Infusions of Yerba Santa leaves and flowers were used to treat fevers\, coughs\, colds\, stomachaches\, asthma\, rheumatism pleurisy\, chronic bronchitis\, tuberculosis\, and to purify the blood. Heated leaves were placed on the forehead to relieve headaches and other aches and sores. \nThe sticky leaves stay in place upon the skin. Mashed leaves were applied externally to sores\, cuts\, wounds\, insect bites\, and aching muscles. Mashed leaves were also used to reduce the swelling and relieve pain caused by bone fractures. The branches and leaves were burned in steam baths to treat rheumatism and hemorrhoids. Contains chemicals that are thought to loosen mucus in the chest and may increase urination. \nThe Hike\nDistance: 3 miles\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nElevation Gain: 560′\nDifficulty: Fit Beginner\nPace: 2.0 mph\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: Yes\, at the upper parking lot\, which we will be walking up to at the start of this hike.\nDrinking Fountains: Yes\, at the start\, but you have to walk down into the picnic area to get to it.\nParking: Free in the gravel lot\, $? to park up the incline at the top\, cash only.\nTrail: Fire Road and rocky trail\, good condition. \nWhat to Bring:\n1-2 liters of water.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp.
