SUMMARY:Corriganville the Back Way Double Loop Lollipop
DESCRIPTION:4 miles\, 700′ gain\, easy-intermediate\nEasy option: 2.5 miles\, 500′ gain \nParking on the south side of the CA-118 at the Rocky Peak exit. We’ll walk west along the Santa Susana Pass Rd. for about 500 feet\, and directly across from Lilac Ln\, we’ll enter a trail. We’ll move along a relatively flat section for 1/2 mile\, turn right\, and make a gradual climb until just before the wildlife tunnel. \nWe turn left and take a set of switchbacks down into Corriganville. We’ll now be in front of a picnic pavilion. \nEasy Option: Wait at the pavilion for about 35 minutes. \nThe rest of the group can leave their stuff at the pavilion\, and will hike a 1.5 mile loop\, returning to this same place. We’ll turn right and loop through the park. We’ll pass an outdoor amphitheater\, then make a mild climb to the top of a hill. \nNext\, we’ll turn right at the top\, zig-zag down\, and then make a left to the wide center trail that leads up through the park to its only parking lot. We won’t cross to the lot yet. \nWe’ll follow the trail as it bends to the right until it eventually bends back left and heads into the parking area. We’ll then walk along the side of the lot and head back to the picnic pavilion\, where we’ll have a social event. \nAfter the event\, we’ll circle around the front of the pavilion and walk along railroad tracks for 200 yards towards the park lot. Behind a couple small shacks\, we’ll turn left and cross the tracks\, then head onto a trail and take this all the way back to Santa Susana Pass Rd. and then our cars. \nIt is posted that the park closes at sunset\, so for this hike\, we’ll start heading back before dark. \nInteresting Notes\nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nCalifornia Sagebrush\nAromatic when crushed. AKA\, common sage\, coastal sage. Sunflower family. Cowboys used to ride through it and brush up against the pine-shaped leaves\, coming home with the smell on their clothes and giving rise to the nickname “Cowboy Cologne.” Not a true sage. Can be used as a cooking spice and can be made into a tea. Tear off some needles by running your hand up the stalk and smell the aroma. \nPurple Sage\nGrey-green leaves. Aromatic when crushed. Purple flowers. Aka\, Tobacco Sage\, with mild hallucinogenic properties when smoked. Can be used as a spice or made into a tea. Tea has medicinal affects: Antiviral\, gargle for sore throats\, reduce hay fever symptoms and other drying actions. In the last summer\, fall\, and winter months\, the flowers will have turned brown and the leaves we take on a greyer color. \nDirections\nRocky Peak Exit\, South Side of CA-118\nSimi Valley\, CA 93065\n34.267447\, -118.634809 \nFrom the 118\nExit 32 Rocky Peak Rd.\nPark on south side of the freeway along Santa Susanna Pass Rd. \nFrom the 101 @ CA-23\nNorth CA-23 for 8.4 miles.\nEast I-118 for 14 miles.\nExit 32 Rocky Peak Rd. \nPark on south of the freeway along Santa Susanna Pass Rd. \nThe Hike (route link)\nDistance: 4 mi.\, easy option 2.5 mi.\nElevation Gain: 700′\, easy option 500′.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate\, easy option – Fit Beginner\nPace: 2.0 mph\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: Yes\, at the picnic pavilion.\nDrinking Fountains: Yes\nParking: Free\, south side of CA-118\nTrail: Single Track\, Double Track\, and fire road.\nPurpose: Social \nWhat to Bring:\n1-2 liters of water.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp. SUMMARY:Lindero Canyon Road to Simi Peak - Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:http://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/e/3/a/0/event_167038272.jpeg \nThis challenging hike has some rocky parts\, but no scrambling. \nThis hike will take us on a scenic trip from the suburbs of Oak Park to the top of Simi Peak\, which overlooks both the Simi and Conejo Valleys and offers splendid views of the Santa Monica range and offshore islands to the south and west. \nOur route begins at the north end of Oak Park. We begin our ascent\, through a series of switchbacks\, a fire road\, and then a double track. Once we reach China Flats\, our remaining route is reasonably flat\, except for the last quarter mile\, as we ascend about 300 feet to reach Simi Peak and its worthwhile views. The terrain is a mix of single and double-file trail and open fire road. \nThe total distance will be approximately 6+ miles with 1400+ feet elevation gain. \nThe hike is mainly open hillside and chaparral. The weather can range from calm to windy and from warm to hot. Dress accordingly. We will stop at Simi Peak to grab a snack and enjoy the great views there\, and return to the traihead via China Flat and then the fire road back to our starting point. \nParking: \nParking is free at the Lindero Canyon Trailhead. Please do not leave anything of value in your car\, at this or any other trailhead. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 Freeway – Exit the 101 freeway at Lindero Canyon Road and turn north toward the Simi Hills. Drive about 4 miles on Lindero Canyon Road to Wembly Ave. and make a U-turn. After the U-turn\, the China Flats Trailhead will be on the right. Park along the right side of the road and we will meet in front of the marked China Flats Trailhead. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. If you are able to proceed\, it is expected that you will maintain line of sight with other members of the group at all times and help to promote the group’s safety and fitness goals. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. DESCRIPTION:NOTE UNUSUAL STARTING LOCATION! \nWe will start our hike at the neighborhood trailhead at Pinehill and Potrero in Newbury Park. See written instructions; parking is not permitted on Potrero\, so you’ll have to find spots on Pinehill or Greenwood Street. \nOur lopsided lollipop hike will pass by our usual RSV parking spot\, descend to the bridge\, and climb up and out of the canyon along the Upper Sycamore Creek trail. SUMMARY:Ray Miller Trail in La Jolla Canyon ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:We will start this hike at 8:30 and go to the fire road.\nThe trail is an awesome blend of ocean and mountain views in Malibu’s La Jolla Canyon. We will start from the trailhead which follows the canyon eastward\, away from the ocean. Then\, it quickly brings you back toward the ocean at a gradual incline. There’s a great lookout spot where it gives you a breathtaking view of the Pacific Coast Highway against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean\, with sweeping views toward Mugu Rock on the west and Sycamore Cove on the east. After another peak\, you’ll start a slight decline that brings you to the fire road where we will turn around. Along the way\, we’ll be treated to magnificent sweeping views of La Jolla and Big Sycamore Canyons\, and of course\, the largest ocean in the world. On a clear day\, the Channel Islands are easily within sight\, although the marine layer has been pretty prominent this summer.\nThis is a 5-6 mile out and back hike with an elevation gain/loss of about 1000’. It will be hot so bring lots of water and a hat. \nDirections: \nFrom Los Angeles\, take the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) north\, 22 miles from Malibu Canyon Rd. Across the street from Thornhill Broome Beach is the entrance to La Jolla Canyon. It is very clearly marked. Turn right. \nFrom Ventura\, take PCH eastward\, and turn left 4 miles after Las Posas Road into La Jolla Canyon. \nHeads up: There is a parking fee in the lot (you can try leaving your pass in the window although they are generally not used in the summer). There is free parking on PCH just a short walk to the trailhead. \nPlease review the guidelines (guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPlan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Happy Camp - Suitable for beginners
DESCRIPTION:Beginner\, 5 miles\, 500′ gain. Bug spray recommended.\nThis hike is entirely fire-road and is almost completely flat. Some of this trail is sandy\, so walking it at times can be more difficult. There are a lot of different interesting plants on this hike. \nFrom the trail head\, we walk along the fire road next to the golf course for 1.3 miles until making a left at a junction. \nPlease be advised that from that point on\, there is a no dogs allowed sign. At some point as we continue\, the ground will become very sandy. \nThe landscape will change from dry to green\, eventually coming to a spot where sometimes you can hear the water running along the left down in a canyon. We’ll stop there to share some Snacks and/or beverages to share and have a social event for 30-60 minutes\, before turning around to head back the way we came. Please bring snacks and/or beverages to share. \nInteresting Notes:\nYou will see several plants of note\, and if you are interested\, you can look them up before the hike. I’ll mention several\, and then fully describe a couple more: \nRussian Thistle\, Black Walnut\, Caterpillar Phacelia\, White Sage\, Yucca\, Bladder Pod. \nJimson Weed\nThe plant got its name from Jamestown\, because in 1676\, Jamestown\, VA soldiers ate this plant in their salad and became psychotic for 11 days. \nThe leaves and seeds are used to make medicine. Despite serious safety concerns\, jimson weed is used to treat asthma\, cough\, flu (influenza)\, swine flu\, and nerve diseases. Some people use it as a recreational drug to cause hallucinations and a heightened sense of well-being (euphoria). All parts of Datura plants contain dangerous levels of the tropane alkaloids atropine\, hyoscyamine\, and scopolamine\, which are classified as deliriants\, or anticholinergics. \nThe risk of fatal overdose is high among uninformed users\, and many hospitalizations occur amongst recreational users who ingest the plant for its psychoactive effects. As much as a 5:1 variation can be found between plants. It contains chemicals such as atropine\, hyoscyamine\, and scopolamine. \nIngesting only a few small seeds can result in serious poisoning and may be life-threatening. Ingesting even small amounts of the plant or seeds can result in confusion\, frightening hallucinations\, the inability to urinate or sweat\, overheating\, and a rapid heart rate. \nDepending on the amount ingested\, these troubling symptoms can last hours to many days\, and in some cases can lead to death. Touching he plant can cause dermatitis. \nCastor Bean\nOne of the most poisonous plants in the world. \nThe seeds contain ricin\, one of the most poisonous naturally occurring substances known. Perhaps just one milligram of ricin can kill an adult. Walter White made a poison cigarette by putting in ricin\, in the series Breaking Bad. \nThe symptoms of human poisoning begin within a few hours of ingestion. If death has not occurred in 3-5 days\, the victim usually recovers. The seed causes skin irritation at the contact point. It is said that just one seed can kill a child. \nIn 1978\, ricin was used to assassinate Georgi Markov in 1978\, a Bulgarian journalist who spoke out against the Bulgarian government. He was stabbed with the point of an umbrella while waiting at a bus stop near Waterloo Station in London. They found a perforated metallic pellet embedded in his leg that had presumably contained the ricin toxin. \nCastor beans are pressed to extract castor oil which is used for medicinal purposes. Ricin does not partition into the oil because it is water-soluble\, therefore\, castor oil does not contain ricin\, provided that no cross-contamination occurred during its production. \nUsed in bone marrow transplants\, cancer therapies\, AIDS treatment\, and can selectively destroy neurons by injecting ricin into nerves. \nDirections:\nHappy Camp\n15100 Happy Camp Canyon Rd.\nMoorpark\, CA 93021\n34.311460\,-118.866110 \nFrom the 118 and from the 101:\nHead to towards the intersection of I-118 and CA-23.\nExit 19A Princeton Ave.\, turn right (north) if coming from the east\, left coming from CA-23.\nPrinceton Ave. north for 0.2 miles.\nLeft on Campus Park Dr. for 0.4 miles and continue on Happy Camp Canyon Rd. for 0.7 miles.\nFollow signs to Rustic Canyon golf course.\nPark on the right in gravel lot\, just before golf course paved lot. Do not park in the paved golf course lot\, it has a gate that closes at sunset. \nThe Hike\nDistance: 5 miles\, 3 1/2 hours\nElevation Gain: 500′\nDifficulty: Fit Beginner\nPace: 2.0 mph\nDogs: No. A sign half-way says no dogs. I’m not the dog enforcer\, so bring a dog at your own risk.\nRestrooms/Drinking Fountains: Yes\, inside the golf course clubhouse at the start\, but likely closed after dark.\nParking: Free in the gravel lot next to the paved golf course lot.\nTrail: Fire Road and some with powdered sand. \nWhat to Bring:\n1-2 liters of water.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK. SUMMARY:Angel Vista - Full Moon Potluck hike
DESCRIPTION:Start at 5pm due to the heat and the moonrise time. \n3.0 miles\, 800′ gain\, easy-intermediate.\nMoonrise 8:52 pm\nPhoto by Helen \nLet’s enjoy the gorgeous sunset\, full moon\, and fun loaded potluck picnic at the beautiful Angel Vista! \nThis is a potluck hike. Please bring food\, drinks to share.\nIf your item requires utensils/plates/toothpicks\, etc.\, please bring them.\nYou may wish to bring your own cup\, plate\, and utensils in case there aren’t any. \nSnacks and/or beverages to share \nThis hike is rated easy-intermediate because it is a continuous incline for 1.5 miles. This isn’t real steep\, but it is continuous\, and many beginner hikers have indicated this should be rated intermediate. \nThat said\, there is no reason a fit beginner cannot complete this hike. If needed\, just stop and rest along the way\, even if it’s every 50 steps. This is not a conditioning hike\, it is a social hike\, and you really can’t get lost. \nThe only junction is 200 yards before the top\, where we’ll turn right to complete the climb. \nAt the top\, there is a picnic table and 360 degree incredible views that are especially wonderful at night. We’ll have a snack-share social event at the top for 30-60 minutes before heading back the way we came. Please bring some food and drink to share\, and utensils of your item requires it. \nThe top has been known to sometimes be very cool and windy. Please bring something to put on in case it is that way at the top. \nInteresting Notes \nTree Tobacco\nThe Cahuilla Indians used the leaves interchangeably with other tobacco species in hunting rituals and as a poultice to treat swellings\, bruises\, cuts\, wounds\, boils\, sores\, inflamed throat\, and swollen glands. It does not contain nicotine. \nIt contains anabasine\, a similar compound\, which is highly toxic to humans and animals. It is more toxic than nicotine. Ingestion of the leaves can be fatal. It is being investigated for use as a biofuel. All parts of this plant are toxic. Used as an insecticide. Do not smoke. \nElderberry\nThe blue or purple berries are gathered and made into elderberry wine\, jam\, syrup\, and pies. The entire flower cluster can be dipped in batter and fried while petals can be eaten raw or made into a fragrant and tasty tea. Spit out the seeds. Elderflower water is also used in perfumes and sweets. \nMost agree that they do need to be cooked if you are going to eat more than just a few out of hand. That’s because they have a small amount of cyanide producing glycosides\, which are released upon digestion. Fully ripe black berries are not toxic and you can eat as many as you like. Boiling or baking takes care of any “toxic” issue as does drying raw berries. \nDirections:\nRosewood Trailhead\n398 Regal Oak Ct.\nThousand Oaks\, CA 91320 \nFrom the 101\nVentu Park exit\, South (toward ocean).\nRight on Lynn Road for 1000′.\nLeft on Regal Oak Ct. for 1/3 mi.\nPark on the street \nHike Distance: 3.0 miles\nGain: 800′\nDistribution: Most of the incline occurs in the first half\, which is a continuous climb. \nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Out and back.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Double track\, single track.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Dogs must be kept on leash and away from picnic table.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along the street. \nWhat to bring\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots. Not required\, but recommended.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed. \nFAQ\nHiking Plus Page Links\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

SUMMARY:Rancho Potrero trails loop in Rancho Sierra Vista/Satwiwa ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:To beat the heat\, we will start at 8:00am. The hike begins at the parking lot to the Ranch Potrero Trail\, turning right onto Olympia Farm Trail. We will check out old Olympia Farms Amphitheater and Picnic area and loop back to Ranch Potrero Trail. At the juncture of Sycamore Canyon Fire Road\, we will turn left onto Rancho Sierra Vista. \nThis area is pretty exposed\, but offers a nice ocean breeze a majority of the time. “Satwiwa” is Chumashan and directly translates to “the bluffs\,” which can also translate to “higher places\,” and is the Chumashan name used for a former village near the current culture center.\nhttps://www.conejovalleyguide.com \nThe eastern area is moderately flat and you will see bluffs to the west\, leading to a moderate hill. At the peak\, you’ll have awesome views of Big Sycamore Canyon Trail\, which descend from Satwiwa to the Pacific Ocean along a historic Chumash trade route\, as well as toward Boney. We will continue hiking the Loop Trail on the other side when we return to the Sycamore Canyon Fire Road and head back to the car. \nThis is about 5-6 miles with an elevation gain/loss of approximately 1000’ \nDirections:\nExit 101 at Lynn Road in Thousand Oaks. Go west for 5.5 miles\, and turn left\, under the Rancho Sierra Vista arch\, into the National Park. SUMMARY:Encinal to Trancas Canyon and Bridge - Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:This out-and-back hike on the Backbone Trail is about 8 miles with about 1\,550′ of total elevation gain (there will be a shorter 5+ mile option\, see below). The hike starts and ends at our usual trailhead for the Encinal Canyon hike. We’ll cross the road\, descend into a shaded single-track trail with a couple of lovely small water crossings\, then ascend until we get to the big tree that we use as a rendezvous point when we hike the Newton Canyon trail. That’s 5.3 miles. I will turn around at that point but Kathy will continue on and lead the longer hike to the bridge over the creek\, completing a round trip of 8.3 miles. Along the way we’ll see the monument commemorating Arnold Schwarzenegger’s donation of the last 40 acres to complete the end-to-end Backbone Trail. \nTrailhead Directions: Exit 101 at Kanan Road\, and drive south to the Mulholland Road intersection\, where you’ll turn right. Keep to the left\, as Encinal splits off within the first half mile or so. Drive west on Encinal to the parking lot at the trailhead. \nPlease review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. Here are some highlights and a link to the guidelines: \nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nPlan on completing the entire hike at a moderate pace or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nAll participants must be 18 or older\, or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.\nNo dogs on Weekday Trailblazers hikes\n\nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY:\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Morro Bay Camping Trip\, Thurs Aug 14 - Sun Aug 17\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:CHC Camping Trip\nMorro Bay State Park Campground. August 14-17\, 2025 \nJoin us for a fun and educational beach campout! \nMorro Bay State Park is located 13 miles west of San Luis Obispo\, on the Central Coast about 3.5 hours from Santa Clarita. The park features a lagoon and natural bay habitats\, and a natural history museum. Our CHC geologist\, Mary Bates will be along to teach about the geological features of the area. On the lagoon’s northeastern and eastern edges\, there are saltwater and brackish marshes that support thriving bird populations. Two of the Nine Sisters chain of volcanic peaks leading from San Luis Obispo to Morro Bay\, Black Hill & Cerro Cabrillo\, are within park boundaries. Black Hill has a trail winding through dense stands of Monterey Pine trees and offers a panoramic view of the greater Morro Bay area at its summit. Cerro Cabrillo has even more trails to explore all along its base. It is near Montana de Oro\, which also has some beautiful trails. \nThe Community Hiking Club of SCV has reserved a limited number of pre-paid campsites which are available for sharing with other CHC campers. The cost of the reserved campsites will be divided equally among the number of campers per site. Each camper will be advised of their portion prior to the trip and is responsible for paying the party who reserved the campsite upon arrival. \nEach campsite has a fire ring and picnic table with water spigots nearby. There are flush toilets and TOKEN-operated shower facilities in place. An RV sanitation station and water-fill station are also available. Firewood is for sale from the campground host and proceeds go to help the Central Coast State Parks Association. \nOnly 2 vehicles maximum per campsite\, so carpooling from SCV is highly recommended. No extra vehicles in campsites beyond the 2 vehicle limit. Trailers and motorcycles count as vehicles. Additional vehicles may be parked just outside the state park. Arrangements can be made with another camper to help bring you and your camping equipment into the campground with their vehicle should you arrive after the parking spots at the campsite have been filled. \n8 Persons maximum per campsite. \nDogs must be monitored and leashed within the campgrounds. \nTo Reserve a Spot: RSVP AND secure your spot with a $20 deposit. Venmo your deposit to @Heidi-Webber-5 with the comment “Morro Bay Camping.” The rest of the fees will be divided between attendees and collected at the campsite. First come\, first served. \nRefund Policy:\nIf you cancel\, your deposit is forfeited.\nIf CHC cancels a camping trip that requires a reservation fee at the time the site is reserved\, each camper that paid the $20 deposit to hold their spot on the trip will be refunded all of their $20 minus the shared cost of any cancellation fee\, if one is charged. \nAddress:\nMorro Bay Campground\nState Park Road\nMorro Bay\, CA 93442 \nDirections:\nMorro Bay State Park & Campground are located: \n\n13 miles west of San Luis Obispo on Highway 1\n32 miles south of the Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument Visitor Center on Highway 1\n124 miles south of Monterey through Big Sur on Highway 1 (When road conditions permit)\nThe charming community of Morro Bay is located 1.5 miles to the north of the campground and offers gas stations\, grocery stores\, dining and more.\nThe coastal town of Cayucos is located 7.5 miles to the north of the campground and offers more dining choices.\nThe small town of Los Osos is located 5 miles to the south of the campground and offers even more gas stations\, grocery stores\, and dining options.\n\n\n\nGoogle Maps link:\nhttps://maps.app.goo.gl/Unrn7SVp9oPRmyWn6 \nMore information will go out the week of the trip.\nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY – IMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY:\nWhen you sign up for this event\, you are releasing Community Hiking Club from any liability or responsibility with your participation in this group activity. SUMMARY:Paradise Falls - Moonridge - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:3.3 miles\, 800′ gain\, fit beginner \nA hike to Paradise Falls is one of the most popular things to do for those visiting Simi Valley\, yet a lot of people that live nearby rarely make this fun hike or perhaps have never done it. There are several paths one can take to the falls. This one is the Moonridge loop from Mark T. \nThe waterfall is always flowing. It is fed by urban run-off\, surface water waste created by urbanization\, and feeds into a small pond. \nWe start from the tennis court lot 4 blocks E. of the main parking lot and across the road. \nWe’ll head about 100 steps north and go down and into an under-street tunnel to cross the road. Turn right out of the tunnel\, and follow this path around. \nThere are several splits of this trail\, so follow the group. The trail leads through a thick canopy to the bottom of the steps that lead to the main parking lot. We’ll regroup there. \nWe’ll continue along the Moonridge trail\, following it around\, crossing a fire road\, and left at the North Teepee trail for about 500′ to a large Teepee. We can take a few pictures\, there’s a drinking fountain\, and we can rest a moment. Then we’ll continue down to the waterfall and hang out for a short while. \nTo continue\, we’ll head partly back up and cross the back side of the waterfall along Wildwood Canyon trail. After about another 200 yards\, we’ll come to couple picnic tables on the right where we’ll share snacks and beverages. \nReturning Early\nFor those that wish to head back instead of hanging around for the entire snack share\, you are responsible for finding your own way back: \nYou can either follow the posted route and map\, or take this alternate route: left at the next junction\, a relatively steep up for 200 yds. back to the Teepee\, turn right and continue 1/2 mile until it dead-ends\, turn right. After 1/2 mile\, you reach the main parking lot. Turn right at the road for 4 blocks and cross the street to find the tennis court parking lot. \nContinuing with the group\nWe’ll continue for 1/3 mile along the Wildwood Canyon trail\, cross the bridge\, make a left\, and follow the Indian Creek trail for 1 mile until arriving back through the tunnel and back to the parking lot. \nIf you are not following the leader on the return\, you should know:\nAfter crossing the bridge and turning left\, you will come to a creek. We’ll be taking a sharp turn to the left a few feet before the second creek. It’s easy to miss and almost doesn’t even look like a trail. \nYou will see several plants of note \nPrickly Pear Cactus\nInside and fruit are edible. Remove needles and scrape to remove hairs\, cut top off\, hollow out to make water container. Burn or scrape off needles – even stones can be used if you don’t have a knife. Fruit peels easily. SUMMARY:Gardiner Basin Loop with Rae Lakes
DESCRIPTION:Gardiner Basin Loop with Rae Lakes. I am posting this trip to gauge interest from the club\, please add your name to the waiting list if you want to join. I will update once permits are in hand in mid-February. If you are willing to be alternate trip leader on the backcountry permit please let me know. \nTHIS IS NOT A BEGINNER TRIP. This trip passes through some of the most beautiful parts of the Sierras including Rae Lakes. It is also high altitude\, starting at Onion Valley (9200) and going up from there. We will cross 5 high passes (Kearsarge (11\,800)\, Gardiner (11\,200)\, Sixty Lakes Col (11\,700)\, Glen Pass (11\,900)\, and then Kearsarge again) over 5-6 days. Sixty Lakes Col is a class 2 scramble. Daily mileage is around 10 miles per day. Bear barrels are required. \nRoute details via CalTopo https://caltopo.com/m/072PR . The majority of the trip is an off-the-maintained-trail-system loop requiring navigational skills. Bring a compass and a map. Although rugged\, this trip will be conducted at a relaxed pace with no more than 12 miles per day. Your trip leader likes to stop\, breathe\, take pictures\, and enjoy being in the wilderness. \nCarpooling from San Diego to the trailhead will be arranged once the attendees have been finalized. \nItinerary: \nSaturday August 16th- drive to Onion Valley (approximately 7 hours drive from San Diego)\, car camp at or near trailhead\nSunday Aug 17th – Enter wilderness via Onion Valley Trailhead\, over Kearsarge Pass to Charlotte Lake. From start at Onion Valley (9200′) over Kearsarge pass (11\,800) 8.3 miles\, elevation gain/loss 2745/1539\nMonday Aug 18th – Over Gardiner pass into Gardiner basin\, camp in the basin. From start at Charlotte Lake (10400′) over Gardiner pass (11\,262) and descend to Gardiner Creek (8900) 6.6 miles\, elevation gain/loss 1757/3122. Should have time to explore Gardiner Basin after setting camp.\nTuesday Aug 19th – From Gardiner creek (8900) follow the creek upstream to lake 11407\, then over Sixty Lakes Col (11\,732) and descend into Sixty Lakes Basin to camp there. 6.8 miles\, elevation gain/loss 2800/1270. Short mileage as the climb over the col may be challenging.\nWednesday Aug 20th – From Sixty Lakes Basin (10630) over Arrowhead Gap (also noted as basin notch on some maps) to rejoin PCT north of Rae lakes at Arrowhead lake\, proceed south through Rae lakes and over Glen Pass (11991) to camp at Kearsarge Lakes. 10.7 miles\, elevation gain/loss 2672/2304\nThursday Aug 21st – Back to Onion Valley Trailhead. 5.7 mi\, over Kearsarge pass (11818) and down to parking lot (9200). Should get back in time to drive back to San Diego. \nDisclaimer: You are responsible for yourself and your safety. The trip leader is not a professional guide. You are responsible for making good decisions. Be prepared for the terrain\, weather\, distance\, and elevation. As with any trip\, the unexpected can happen including inclement weather. A go with the flow attitude is always a good thing.\nBy signing up for these events\, you agree not to hold the organizers responsible for whatever happens to you on the trip.
