SUMMARY:Lindero Canyon Road to Simi Peak - Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:http://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/e/3/a/0/event_167038272.jpeg \nThis challenging hike has some rocky parts\, but no scrambling. \nThis hike will take us on a scenic trip from the suburbs of Oak Park to the top of Simi Peak\, which overlooks both the Simi and Conejo Valleys and offers splendid views of the Santa Monica range and offshore islands to the south and west. \nOur route begins at the north end of Oak Park. We begin our ascent\, through a series of switchbacks\, a fire road\, and then a double track. Once we reach China Flats\, our remaining route is reasonably flat\, except for the last quarter mile\, as we ascend about 300 feet to reach Simi Peak and its worthwhile views. The terrain is a mix of single and double-file trail and open fire road. \nThe total distance will be approximately 6+ miles with 1400+ feet elevation gain. \nThe hike is mainly open hillside and chaparral. The weather can range from calm to windy and from warm to hot. Dress accordingly. We will stop at Simi Peak to grab a snack and enjoy the great views there\, and return to the traihead via China Flat and then the fire road back to our starting point. \nParking: \nParking is free at the Lindero Canyon Trailhead. Please do not leave anything of value in your car\, at this or any other trailhead. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 Freeway – Exit the 101 freeway at Lindero Canyon Road and turn north toward the Simi Hills. Drive about 4 miles on Lindero Canyon Road to Wembly Ave. and make a U-turn. After the U-turn\, the China Flats Trailhead will be on the right. Park along the right side of the road and we will meet in front of the marked China Flats Trailhead. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. If you are able to proceed\, it is expected that you will maintain line of sight with other members of the group at all times and help to promote the group’s safety and fitness goals. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you are taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. \nIf you choose to sign up for this or any Weekday Trailblazers Meetup event\, you are releasing the Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience. \nAll participants must be 18 or older\, or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. \nDogs are not allowed. \nSee you there! \nLinda \nCell: 818-523-8719

SUMMARY:Kanan Dume to Latigo ~
DESCRIPTION:This hike should still be fairly cool and we can meet the other hiking group for lunch on Kanan. We will go a bit slower than the other hike. We will start on Kanan at Newton Canyon and hike to Latigo Canyon Rd. It is a little steep at the beginning but then turns into a nice hike. This hike is only 5 about miles with about 900’ gain and will take us on a less-traveled but quite beautiful part of the 67-mile Backbone trail. \nPlease only sign up for one hike. \nThe route begins at Kanan Dume Road\, there is a bit of a climb at first and then it levels out\, allowing us to cross over the southernmost tunnel (Tunnel 1) above Kanan Dume Road. We then proceed easterly roughly 2.5 miles and up 900 feet\, gradually winding our way up and through Latigo Canyon\, turning around at Latigo Canyon Road\, and returning to the cars. Along the hike\, you can take a short jog up to the ridgeline for spectacular Pacific Ocean views. \nThe terrain is a mix of single and double-file trail with occasional stretches of loose rock and gravel (you may want to bring trekking poles). The majority of our out and back hike is wooded and shaded canyon trails\, offering periodic glimpses of the Pacific. \nNOTE: Please review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. Here are some highlights and a link to the guidelines: \nhttps://www.meetup.com/The-Weekday-Trailblazers/about/\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours:\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nPlan on completing the entire hike at an intermediate pace or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo dogs allowed. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 – exit at the Kanan Road exit and drive south (toward the ocean) 7.8 miles\, going through two of the three tunnels on this road (which changes name to Kanan Dume Road). Turn right into the “Backbone Trail” parking area\, just before entering the third tunnel. \nFrom PCH – turn up South Kanan Dume Road. Drive 4.4 miles from PCH\, going through one tunnel\, and then turn left into the “Backbone Trail” parking area\, almost immediately after coming out of the tunnel. Free parking is available at the trailhead. \nDisclaimer / Release of Liability\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. SUMMARY:Palo Comado to the Edge of China Flat - Gentler Friendly but not Beginner
DESCRIPTION:Palo Comado (“Burnt Stick” in Spanish) tells you a lot about the environs – frequently burned over by wildfires\, this was directly in the line of the Woolsey Fire but much of the vegetation has re-grown. \nThis is one of many routes from the Conejo Valley to China Flat. Except for one turn near the trailhead\, this gentle 900′ climb\, punctuated by a 100′ climb and descent just at the start\, is uninterrupted until we get up to the top\, where we’ll rest at the bench\, turn around\, and head back. \nThis is about 6 mile hike with about 1\,000′ of elevation gain. \nUPDATE: Please review the guidelines to participate in our morning hikes. SUMMARY:Long Canyon - Easy cc lollipop - the back way
DESCRIPTION:4.3 miles\, 800′ gain\, Easy Intermediate.\nEasier Option: 3.2 miles\, 400′ gain\, Fit Beginner. \nThe address is not the address of the hike\, but a nearby address that should get you to pass by the trailhead. \nThe “cc” in the title means counter clockwise. We’ll be stopping at various points to regroup. \nWe will start by heading the back way on a mostly flat section from the Long Canyon trailhead parking lot to an asphalt road\, then left to the Poopond and trail split. At this point\, if you want a shorter hike\, turn left for 0.6 miles and 220 feet of gain\, arriving at the Rockuzzi on the left. \nOtherwise\, we’ll turn right and make our way down to the Autumn Ridge trail\, make a left heading sharply up for about 100′\, then left on the fireroad for almost a mile up to the five-points junction. We’ll make a sharp left\, then another left after about 500′ at the bench\, heading up 50 yards and then down the Sunrise trail. \nAfter about 1000′\, we’ll head into the rocks into or next to the Rockcuzzi\, a natural circular indentation in the rocks\, hidden from view unless you know where it is\, for a snack share social event for 30-60 minutes. \nFinally\, we continue down the Sunrise trail\, take the Woodridge Loop trail back to the asphalt road\, then head back the way we came along the Woodridge Connector back to the lot. \nInteresting Notes \nTurkey Mullein\nSmashed leaves can be thrown into the water to stupefy fish\, causing them to float to the surface\, a practice illegal in most states. The seeds are not toxic to birds and are enjoyed especially by doves and wild turkeys. \nAncient Greeks rolled and dried the leaves\, then used them as wicks for oil lamps. They were used as torches burned at funerals. Many tribes employed the use of mullein leaf tea for coughs\, colds\, and rheumatism. They considered it to be analgesic\, anti-inflammatory\, antispasmodic\, and expectorant. The astringent and demulcent properties of the leaf tea were found useful in cases of diarrhea. \nWild Oats\nThe mature seed of the plant is used as a cereal grain. All oats have edible seeds\, although they are small and hard to harvest in most species. Oats are hard to tell apart from weedy relatives\, so the term “sowing wild oats” came to be used to describe unprofitable activities and destructive sexual liaisons of an unmarried young male that could result in children being born out of wedlock. \nHike\nDistance: 4.3 miles\nGain: 800\nDistribution: Most of the incline is in the middle of this hike. It is a fire road incline of about 1 mile.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Lollipop\, counter-clockwise.\nPace: 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road\, single and double track. Areas of sand\, gravel\, and rock\, some of it rugged.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free in the lot at the trail head. \nWhat to bring:\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed. \nHosting\nRoute: The host knows the route.\nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed.\nHike type: Social. \nStops:\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share at the 2/3 point along the hike. \nWe will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda or sticks. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nEach hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind\, and for making sure the host is notified if they are going to split from the group. \nDirections:\nWhere Long Canyon Rd. and S. Wood Ranch Pkwy. intersect in Simi Valley\, at the traihead in the paved parking lot on the southwest corner. \nFrom CA-23 and I-101\nNorth CA-23\, exit Olsen Rd.\nRight (east) on Olsen Rd.\, which becomes Madera Rd.\, for 2 miles.\nRight (south) on N. Wood Ranch Pkwy.\, which becomes S. Wood Ranch Pkwy.\, for 2 miles.\nRight at dead end (intersection with Long Canyon Rd.) and immediate left into parking lot.\nTrailhead at the opposite corner. \nFrom CA-118 and CA-27\nWest CA-118\, exit 23 onto 1st St.\nLeft (south) on 1st St.\, which becomes Long Canyon Rd.\, for 5 miles.\nCross at dead end (intersection with S. SUMMARY:ARIZONA: Havasupai (~50 Miles RT+)
DESCRIPTION:Bucket list trip! \nIt’s finally time to cross off Havasupai! This is not a beginner trip. We will be moving at an advanced pace. To attend this event\, you and I must have previous trip history together\, no exceptions. Feel free to contact me! \nPlease add yourself to the wait-list to indicate interest. \nThese dates are tentative pending permits\, but this is the time-frame I’m targeting. Flexibility is required. It will be warmer\, but we will maximize the opportunity to swim and enjoy the water. We will utilize cooler hours for most foot-travel. \nYou must be able to manage yourself and your transportation. This trip has minimal guidance involving anything off-trail. It may be possible to plan ridesharing by communicating with other attendees. \nThe trip leader will not be traveling back to California after this event and is unable to facilitate rideshares. \nAs this trip is out of state\, communication is critical. If you are attending but have not connected with the group in Flagstaff prior to trail start\, you will be left behind. There is sporadic phone service or no service\, therefore if something comes up\, you must communicate with the group as early as possible. \n\nTotal roundtrip distance: ~50 miles+ \nMore information to come. \nDISCLAIMER: Anything to do with any part of this trip (including hiking\, swimming\, and kayaking) are done at your own risk. Be responsible for yourself and your safety. Make good decisions. With any trip\, things can change\, reservations can get lost\, the unexpected can happen. A go-with-the-flow attitude is always a good thing\, and most importantly\, let’s all have fun! Make sure you are in good enough physical shape for the distance\, elevation changes\, and terrain. The hike leaders in this group aren’t professional hike leaders. By signing up for these events\, you agree not to hold the Meetup organizers responsible for whatever happens to you on these events. The hiking group does not certify the expertise of the organizers\, the event or assistant organizers (hike leaders) and…We are NOT responsible for any possible losses or injuries.

DESCRIPTION:3.0 miles\, 800′ gain\, easy-intermediate.\nMoonrise 6:09 pm\nPhoto by Helen \nLet’s enjoy the gorgeous sunset\, full moon\, and fun loaded potluck picnic at the beautiful Angel Vista! \nThis is a potluck hike. Please bring food\, drinks to share.\nIf your item requires utensils/plates/toothpicks\, etc.\, please bring them.\nYou may wish to bring your own cup\, plate\, and utensils in case there aren’t any. \nSnacks and/or beverages to share \nThis hike is rated easy-intermediate because it is a continuous incline for 1.5 miles. This isn’t real steep\, but it is continuous\, and many beginner hikers have indicated this should be rated intermediate. \nThat said\, there is no reason a fit beginner cannot complete this hike. If needed\, just stop and rest along the way\, even if it’s every 50 steps. This is not a conditioning hike\, it is a social hike\, and you really can’t get lost. \nThe only junction is 200 yards before the top\, where we’ll turn right to complete the climb. \nAt the top\, there is a picnic table and 360 degree incredible views that are especially wonderful at night. We’ll have a snack-share social event at the top for 30-60 minutes before heading back the way we came. Please bring some food and drink to share\, and utensils of your item requires it. \nThe top has been known to sometimes be very cool and windy. Please bring something to put on in case it is that way at the top. \nInteresting Notes \nTree Tobacco\nThe Cahuilla Indians used the leaves interchangeably with other tobacco species in hunting rituals and as a poultice to treat swellings\, bruises\, cuts\, wounds\, boils\, sores\, inflamed throat\, and swollen glands. It does not contain nicotine. \nIt contains anabasine\, a similar compound\, which is highly toxic to humans and animals. It is more toxic than nicotine. Ingestion of the leaves can be fatal. It is being investigated for use as a biofuel. All parts of this plant are toxic. Used as an insecticide. Do not smoke. \nElderberry\nThe blue or purple berries are gathered and made into elderberry wine\, jam\, syrup\, and pies. The entire flower cluster can be dipped in batter and fried while petals can be eaten raw or made into a fragrant and tasty tea. Spit out the seeds. Elderflower water is also used in perfumes and sweets. \nMost agree that they do need to be cooked if you are going to eat more than just a few out of hand. That’s because they have a small amount of cyanide producing glycosides\, which are released upon digestion. Fully ripe black berries are not toxic and you can eat as many as you like. Boiling or baking takes care of any “toxic” issue as does drying raw berries. \nDirections:\nRosewood Trailhead\n398 Regal Oak Ct.\nThousand Oaks\, CA 91320 \nFrom the 101\nVentu Park exit\, South (toward ocean).\nRight on Lynn Road for 1000′.\nLeft on Regal Oak Ct. for 1/3 mi.\nPark on the street \nHike Distance: 3.0 miles\nGain: 800′\nDistribution: Most of the incline occurs in the first half\, which is a continuous climb. \nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Out and back.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Double track\, single track.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Dogs must be kept on leash and away from picnic table.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along the street. \nWhat to bring\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots. Not required\, but recommended.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed. \nFAQ\nHiking Plus Page Links\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

SUMMARY:Say Cheeseboro Canyon to Palo Comado Canyon ~ Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:http://photos4.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/4/e/0/4/event_85459972.jpeg \nTucked along the 101 in Agoura is the northernmost section of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. Echoing its not-so-distant past of ranching\, the rolling hills and shady canyons are popular with equestrians. Before the ranchers\, Chumash Indians and grizzly bears tromped out the slender trails in the native grasses that became today’s open fire roads. Rabbits\, bobcats\, owls\, hawks\, deer\, and coyotes still call the sycamores\, oaks\, streams\, and sulfur springs of the canyons home. Cheeseboro Canyon is home to the largest concentration of birds of prey outside of Alaska\, as well as the Valley Oak\, the largest oak trees in the US (possibly the world!). \nhttp://photos2.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/4/e/2/c/event_85460012.jpeg \nOur 7 mile hike will carve a loop pattern out of the network of trails and connect Cheeseboro Canyon to adjacent Palo Comado Canyon before returning us to our cars. The trails are mostly wide\, sometimes shaded\, sometimes open to a glorious\, blanketing sky. Total elevation is 1350′\, broken up as we climb over from one canyon to the next. \nhttp://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/4/e/3/6/event_85460022.jpeg \nUPDATE: Please review the revised guidelines to participate in our hikes. Here are some highlights and a link to the guidelines:\nhttps://www.meetup.com/The-Weekday-Trailblazers/about/\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours:\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nPlan on completing the entire hike at an intermediate pace or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo dogs allowed. \nDirections: \nFrom LA and east of Agoura- exit the 101 at Chesebro Rd and turn right at the top of the ramp (Palo Comado Rd). Turn right almost immediately onto Chesebro Rd and drive .7 mile to the park entrance\, on the right (right after the equestrian field). Go through the first parking lot to the second one. \nFrom Westlake Village and west of Agoura- exit the 101 at Chesebro Rd. Go through the stop sign at the end of the ramp\, and turn left at the next one (Palo Comado Rd). Cross the freeway\, and turn right onto Chesebro Rd. Drive .7 mile to the park entrance\, on the right (right after the equestrian field). Go through the first parking lot to the second one. \n*The exit is Chesebro Rd\, the access road into the park is Cheeseboro Canyon Rd.

SUMMARY:Lizard Rock Loop - Easy Intermediate with easier option
DESCRIPTION:Easy Intermediate\, 4.5 miles\, 600′ gain\nEasier Option\, 3.5 miles\, 460′ gain \nThis is a unique loop through Wildwood Park that takes us to the famous Lizard Rock. \nThere are several extended inclines and a few short but steep climbs that cause this to be rated on the easy end of the intermediate spectrum. Beginners will still have no problem completing this hike\, but they may be cursing some of the inclines and will not be zooming along on the steps or inclines at high speed. \nThere is nothing wrong with taking it slow because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. We’ll be waiting for folks to catch up at the major junctions. I may put down white powder lines so that nobody gets lost if they fall way behind. \nWe’ll be starting from the tennis court parking lot 4 blocks east of the trail head parking lot and across the road. \nWe’ll cross to the park side of the road through a tunnel\, and turn right on to the Moonridge trail that runs parallel to the road. We’ll follow for about 1/4 mile\, and then go left instead of taking the stem to the right. \nThis will take us to the steps to the trail head parking lot. We’ll regroup. \nThose that want the easier option will cross the parking lot and take main trail (Mesa trail) straight for 1 mile\, turning right at the Lizard Rock trail\, and following it up to Lizard Rock. \nThe rest of us will continue along the Moonridge trail. We’ll follow it around for another 1/2 mile and make a right at the North Teepee Trail fire road and continue for about 200′. \nNext\, we’ll make a left at the Stagecoach Bluff Trail for about 500′\, where it will dead end at a trail of the same name. We’ll make a left and continue for about 1000′ until it dead ends. We make a left\, then the next right to head up to Lizard Rock\, where we’ll share snacks and beverages. \nFinally\, we’ll head along the ridge of Lizard Rock and then down towards the Mesa Trail fire road. We’ll make a left\, and take it all the way back to the main parking lot. Then we’ll cross the lot and take the steps at the far end of the lot down\, and return on the trail we started on\, back to the tunnel and then our cars. \nReturning Early\nFor those that wish to head back instead of hanging around for the snack share\, you are responsible for finding your own way back. Please follow the posted route and map. \nDirections\nWildwood Park\n635 W Avenida De Los Arboles\nThousand Oaks\, CA 91360 \nFrom the 118:\nCA-118 west to CA-23.\nContinue south on CA-23 to exit 15 for 4.8 miles\, Avenida de los Arboles\nTurn right (west) on Avenida de los Arboles for 3.3 miles until 4 blocks before it ends. SUMMARY:Sagebrush Cantina: Hindsite
DESCRIPTION:Many from this group\, plus other friends\, will attend this event at Sagebrush Cantina. The band playing (Hindsite) puts on a fantastic show\, playing dance\, pop\, r&b/funk\, and hip hop music from the 70’s up to the latest hits. \nThis is one of the best venues I’ve experienced on LA’s west side\, and this is one of the best bands I’ve seen at this venue. Come see a Hollywood quality show for free. Hindsite will have you dancing all night! \nWe’ll be seated either in the outdoor area\, or indoors\, depending on the weather. Seating is tough here\, so even if we don’t all sit together\, we’ll be seeing one another on the dance floor! \nThe band starts at 8p\, but get there an hour earlier and maybe you’ll get a seat with the group. \nSagebrush Cantina\n23527 Calabasas Rd\, Calabasas\, CA 91302\n(818) 222-6062 \nEvents Calendar (Sagebrush Cantina)\nEvents Calendar (Hindsite) \nHiking Plus Page Links

SUMMARY:Mentryville: Pico Canyon Trail
DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION: It’s great to be planning hikes again after some time away to let a nagging foot injury heal. I’m starting with an old favorite that won’t be too hard for someone who hasn’t hiked in the better part of three months. It’s exciting to be hiking again! \nWe’ll start from Mentryville (a historic SCV site) located at the base of Pico Canyon’s chaparral-dominated slopes\, Mentryville was an 1880’s oil boom town built around its oil well\, Pico No. 4. Named for Charles Mentry\, historic buildings still stand including a grand thirteen-room mansion\, a one-room schoolhouse\, and a barn. Mentryville and Pico No. 4 are registered as California State Historical Landmarks. \nThe beginning of the hike is on an asphalt road which yields to a fire road and untimely a single-track trail. Pico Canyon Trail is another one of the local gems where in a just a short hike you’re miles from the hustle and bustle of modern life and into the wide-open spaces of the back country enjoying nature with great views. We’ll be getting started early to avoid the midday heat! \nDETAILS: \n\nMeet: Mentryville Parking lot where Pico Canyon Road ends at 7:00am\, departure at 7:15 am sharp (June 14).\nDistance: Approximately 6.8 miles.\nElevation gain: Approximately 1\,272 feet.\nTime: Approximately 3.5 hours hiking including one snack break (brisk pace).\nConditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition (this is not a beginner hike).\nDogs: Must be on leash.\nRestrooms – Yes at the park.\nAdventure Pass: Not required.\n\nIMPORTANT NOTES: We’ll hike at a brisk pace and ask everyone to stay with the group for a friendly and safe outing.
